The RX Vega 56 Owners Thread

So Vega 56 for £380 was sold out but now back to pre-order, does that mean new stock is coming in the next couple of days?

Edit: wrong thread >_>

I could fabricate a mounting plate for the Kraken anything or any AIO provided that I had a card to work with, it's basic metalwork.

I missed the OCUK launch (slept through) and the Aus launch was a 3 ring circus with no prior notification of launches and very little stock. I'm still on the fence TBH because I have a Korean 1440p panel that is DVI-D only so I'd have to buy a new monitor into the bargain & the only ones I'm remotely interested in committing funds to are the ultrawide quantum dot FS variety.

It's a lot of coin when I'm still up for stuff to finish the new house.

I feel sory for guys that have to explain what they spend their money on. I been working for MY money i spend it how I like or need to. Thats why Ill stay single :-]

I'm happily married and have my own bank account and everything. My wife and I both have separate accounts that our wages are paid into and one joint we move a set amount to each month. Household bills are covered as well as extra to cover holidays/emergencies etc. So we can both buy what we want from our own accounts with no need for explanations. Anyone who enters into any relationship with a single shared account have only themselves to blame. And if money is so tight they shouldn't be looking at expensive GPUs anyway.

One of my favourite topics outside of tech; let's talk money management! I have a shared bank account with my wife, but manage money in a way that allows both of us to spend whatever we want if we've got the money for it. Currently a bit tight on money due to income being a bit low, but still able to comfortably spend ~£400 on a GPU without either of us worrying.

This is the point, as long as money isn't tight then it matters not if you and your partner share a bank account. It's the logical fallacy that all married must justify any purchases = "why I stay single". Anyone could be single and still not have the money for a £400 GPU.

That's the thing. I CAN afford the finance payments. It's no issue but she'll make an issue out of it anyway; hence the argument. Ultimately I'm happy and comfortable with my purchase and won't be changing my mind any time soon, just wish I didn't have to deal with the argument over nothing.

Some Time Spy scores using a few different settings with my vega 56:

R5 1600 @ 3.7, 650W PSU, memory 2400mhz

Balanced profile : 6266 (graphics score 6380)
Turbo profile : 6421 (graphics score 6562)
HBM 900 +0% : 6416 (graphics score 6551)
HBM 900 +25% : 6575 (graphics score 6812)
HBM 900 +50% : 6733 (graphics score 6935)

At hbm 900 & +50% power limit the core clock was boosting to on average 1550 +/- in single digits.

I haven't played with the core speed or under-volting yet:)

I get my vega 56 tomorrow, its been delivered to work today but im working from home :(

I have a Fury running at stock and a 1600 @ 3.85 and 3200mhz RAM so will hopefully post my results tomorrow, can see the difference if any with 3200mhz ram and a slight bump in CPU clock.

I ran time spy last night, my total scores were
Timespy Total GPU Test1 Test2 CPU Score CPU Fps
4975 4810 32.66 26.65 6179 20.76
The Fury with 3854 shaders and stock speed graphics score was 5293 but that was an older driver.

I have also run the Superposition and Gears of War 4 benchmark with the Fury, i was going to clock the Vega 56 down to 1ghz and test again out of curiosity then maybe later once the drivers have matured.

We're not all thieving bankers though that steal from the poor and pay themselves bonuses for doing so :p

Not that you're a banker either but just saying what we all think of bankers :D

Ye thats the situation im on about hahaha. Besides that with my situation cant have close contact with other humans so relationships are not an option for me.

Back on topic vega 56 defgo good card :)

So, how loud are the 56s with the reference cooler?

R9 290 reference cooler loud?

Pretty much, yes.

Strange, I find the reference cooler on the RX 64 to be far better than that on the R9 290/X. Even at default settings of 2400 RPM it is just about acceptable to me, but with undervolting and custom settings in Wattman I have it set to 2200 RPM which is very acceptable.

Techpower reviews for 290 and RX 56.

R9 290 49dbA (stock)

RX 56 42dbA

This is in line with my experience of both, R9 290 was simply unbearable in comparison.

I have not been able to get back to this thread, because the builders are still in.

Male version of having the painters in?

More tea, less sympathy.

I used to work for a courier, its possible they had to send the parcel far more then 22 miles to a regional sorting office. Depends how they are setup

Overclockers UK HQ is a few miles of their closest DPD depot, but DPD reports my card was sorted in Hinckley. Does that make it radioactive?

This is without any tweaking at at all, and I know this bit might be me seeing things, seems more colourful and sharper

This is my impression of the card at stock as well. Even the BIOS POST screen looks crisper.

Any of you 56 boys got the gpu-z beta? Curious if your HBM is different (64 says Samsung)?

I have tested with GPU-Z 2.2.0 and it incorrectly reports Micron. Does anyone have a copy of a later GPU-Z Beta that I can try, or would I need to go through the TechPowerUp forums?

2% off at the same clocks with 12% less CUs; highlights a bottleneck outside of the GPU core. Wouldn't risk flashing a BIOS for the clock changes though, that's easily achieved through WattMan or any other OC utility. I'm at 1650/950 with a small undervolt and haven't started tweaking yet

The BIOS places limits on what WattMan, etc. can do to protect the chip from exceeding its TDP, etc. Some of these limits may be over the top on some chips, so there is good reason to explore ways around them.

The BIOS can always be fully replaced in the Linux kernel. There are UEFI signing restrictions that currently limit BIOS changes under Windows.

There is a thread on OCN (http://www.overclock.net/t/1633446/preliminary-view-of-amd-vega-bios/330) that discusses how to bypass the BIOS PowerPlay table using the Windows registry. This is a more flexible approach than simply flashing from one BIOS to another and it probably provides the same benefits.

The Chinese forum reporting a flash from the Vega64 to the Vega56 seems to give no details on what they did, but I would guess that the TDP/clocking limits on the core and memory were bypassed, while the 8 deactivated CU remained dead. I doubt that the number of CU has much effect on gaming performance of Vega, as the fixed function parts of the GPU core are probably the main bottlenecks.

The two stock BIOS operate at different TDP on the various Vega64, but I have yet to find any difference in performance between the two BIOS on Vega56.
