The RX Vega 64 Owners Thread

Been playing Battlefield 1's Campaign and while it's fun, Vega64 seems to be having odd issues, 1 second it's running full load then the next is goes down to 30% usage, It's quite annoying, Latest drivers, Nothing running in the background, No OSD's, No frame limiting options enabled i.e V-Sync, Frame Rate Target Control etc....Tried running in DX11 and DX12 modes with a range of quality settings.
I've been playing BF1 extensively on single and multi player on two different Vega 64 systems and have not noticed that.

Are you running the GPU overclocked? I did experience a similar behaviour while using unstable settings.

Us Nvidia people (well me) seem to be having an issue similar to what you describe. I've narrowed it down to the Creators Update. Could be your issue.

Hi There

two weeks in to my new vega 64 and loving it (mostly).

I spend quite a bit of time using x plane 11 and the performance is no better than my GTX 970, the core clock seldom goes over 500mhz and the memory speed stays about the same.

Anyone else tried this in Xplane?

I have a Ryzen 5 1600x cpu

Just got a Vega64 , need to buy a block for it now as the loudness is crazy lol.

I've put a full cover block on mine and would recommend this especially if you already have a custom loop.

Is there anything I need to do ? Tweaks etc?

First try the Power Saver profile in WattMan - there's a little less performance, but the benefit to power and noise might be enough for now.

If you really want to tweak, then I'd do something like this:
  1. Select Custom profile in WattMan; undervolt P6 & P7 states to around 1050mV/1100mV (if trying less than 1050mV then reduce the voltage in the HBM panel too - with current drivers this isn't actually HBM voltage, but seems to inhibit lower P6/7 core voltages)
  2. After checking stability, optimise HBM frequency (try around 1050MHz)
  3. Finally tweak the power limit down until typical load noise is tolerable. I wouldn't bother changing fan speeds or temperature targets.
Do I just overclock as normal with afterburner?

Most of us seem to be using WattMan to tweak; having not used MSI Afterburner I don't know whether it works or has side effects with the current drivers, only that there have been issues reported before.

Not played this, but looks good in the Steam preview! One of the reviews on there mentioned a big just in performance changing from Balanced to High Performance mode in Windows. Assuming you're on Windows, try the AMD Ryzen Balanced Power Plan or High Performance.

A redditer has mentioned that vega throttling is based on hot-spot temperature not GPU temperature. Can anyone corroborate this?

I dont think people care enough about getting case temperatures down. Its fine on water maybe but without good airflow the hot-spot can be 20c over what appears to be the GPU temp. Also HBM temp can be 20c over what might be displayed as the cards temp. Maybe this is the disadvantage to not being a tri fan design, the airflow is too streamlined. The HBM is literally sitting next to the GPU so how can the difference be so large I wonder. Is the same section of heatsink not touching all three at once.
Right now with the card very much in cool mode, -40% power limit (or 130w draw) I see its 13c from gpu to hbm. I set the temp target to 69, 75 is too high afaik. hotspot is only 4 over.

I found The Division to work well with the card. Seemed all very well balanced

Disabled Windows DVR? Could also try disabling Game Mode as a workarouns.

Explicit instructions to rule that out. It does nothing useful afaik

Dont touch Afterburner for now. Ironic as some will have MSI cards ?

Try increasing your settings rather than decreasing, I saw increasing Antialising kicked my card into gear properly. I'm not sure if it's an x-plane, driver or combination of the two causing it.

That seems to be doing the trick, thanks. A bit of tweaking and and I will be there.
I had all sorts of trouble with my Vega 64 not putting suficient effort in, and doing slightly better if I forced up the demands with excessive MSAA.

My problem was Wattman. Try playing without any monitoring software open (including Wattman), and see if your performance sorts itself. Of course it becomes very difficult to be sure what the card is doing if you have no monitoring software open, but for me the performance difference is night and day.

right guys bit of a possible issue with vega

having a major issue since yesterday, pc shut down and then was hanging on the windows screen, after loads of tests to see what was going on i narrowed it down to the gpu drivers and the chipset drivers. i could install the gpu driver and all would be cool, but as soon as i installed the chipset driver on the reboot the it would hang on the loading screen. so i decided to install the chipset first and then the gpu but the system would hang installing the gpu driver and i would have to reset the hole thing, keep in mind that ive had the card over two weeks now with zero issues with both drivers installed

so next thing to try was to put it in a different lane and its working perfect both drivers will install fine and everything is back to normal, im now after trying a older card in the previous lane and i can nearly confirm that the lane is wanked as im getting the same issues with a 7950 and a 290x, the board is a crosshair vi hero and its nearly new it could just be a malfunction but its very strange that with vega sitting in the slot it suddenly just pops, it will be my first ever lane to do this to me in over 10 years of having pcs

im going to have to do more testing but im going to have to rma the board now by the looks of it, the card was never overclocked i never had time to mess about with it, it was on balanced or power save

just incase people are wondering the spec is

1700x
CH6 mobo
16gb corsair ram
rx850i psu

Just a heads up, a prospective delivery date has popped up online (competitor I suspect but hope this is ok as no news from OCUK about stocking it). Ordered promptly!

Alphacool Eiswolf 120 GPX Pro ATI RX Vega M01

Looking forward to hearing your results. I fancy one of these but would like to see some numbers and impressions first.
