The RX Vega 64 Owners Thread

It's a good product performance wise. I like the forward looking DX12/Vulkan support and new hardware such as HBCC etc.

However it's terrible on power usage. And just when you thought that was the whole story we find out that OEMs are having issues. Further delaying 3rd party cards.

As well as the story of Raja going on 'leave'. If it is leave and not 'gardening leave'.

You've also got prices. It's a bit pricey for stock blower cards.

No hiding the fact it really couldn't of gone any worse.

Its not really bad on power usage though, vega can be made to sip power and deliver good performance. Its just AMD didnt bother doing this from out the door so we get over volted under clocking crap.
56 stock boost is 1470 odd, i can easily pull 1670 with less voltage to the chip and a 200mhz overclock on the ram also seems to work - numbers that fury wishes it could have seen.

Its not a bad gpu, but stupid overpriced liquid cards and no binning for power have ruined the launch yet again.

I've been keeping an eye on the Alphacool Eiswolf but it's looking like the end of the month for that one. Thanks.

Just a heads up, a prospective delivery date has popped up online (competitor I suspect but hope this is ok as no news from OCUK about stocking it). Ordered promptly!

Alphacool Eiswolf 120 GPX Pro ATI RX Vega M01
can the alphacool be bought without a rad, i fancy getting a 360 rad for it

Hi everyone,

As it happens my replacement AIO came in before the Alphacool stuff. The replacement works like a charm (C0 silicon in the latest batch too it seems). :)

The Eiswolf came in this morning, I pre-ordered direct from Alphacool as OCUK do not seem to stock their stuff anymore.

@old gamer: You can get a Nexxos block (no pump) for the Vega.

I'm also going to swap out my NZXT Kraken 62 which I'm not too happy with, for an Eisbaer and hook it and the Eiswolf together. Awaiting AM4/TR brackets to come into stock before they ship that.

I'll then see if I want to keep the AIO or swap it out for another AC + Eiswolf in the same loop. As I got the AIO at launch price so it might be less painful on the pocket to sell on. :)

Seriously thinking about moving these cards into a new TR build and popping the RX480 into the Ryzen and selling it. But I might wait for the next revision of TR, trying to be sensible is tough .

As an aside, I saw my SF PSU box the other day and was pleasantly surprised to see it was the 1300W model not the 1200 I thought it was. :)

The only CF test I ran (stock) was Timespy and got a shade under 12,000 points.

Have you seen Jayz video on the strix?

Doesn't look good for those who waited for more performance from the AIB cards.

Yeah the customs aint looking good, not had any mention from Sapphire, Giga. etc... about doing them, and look at MSI's so called custom card, its just a reference card they've taken a dremel to, to add extra holes to the IO bracket, and just stuck an 'Air Boost' sticker on the cooler, terrible, Vega has been a shambles from start to finish, from the whole Frontier 'gaming' mess up, to those ridiculous free games that aren't free, as they're actually £110, as if you buy the card with the '2 free games', it costs you an extra £110, thats blatant false advertising, how the **** are they getting away with that!.

Same exact cards, just with the bottom one, you get '2x Free Games', that you have to pay an extra £110 for.

Yes, you can get the games for about £55 so you are also paying twice the price to get them for free?! Anyone who buys that card with the games needs committing.

It looks like a pretty big **** up overall and I think it is making RTG look quite silly.

I like AMD cards and both my PC's have them 290x & vega64 but Nvidia are looking significantly more professional and probably deserve their fanbase. Just watch their drivers don't burn out your card!

On the face of it AMD could offer a lot with freesync and great next gen API support but their architecture just isn't there on performance. Would it have been better to develop a game optimised core and use some gddr5x?

Although at the moment they just need to be good at mining and they will sell!

I still want to know if the Strix is using a C1 or C0 chip.

By the looks of Jayz2Cents Video it' using a C0 as it's a bit worse than a reference.

On a side note - @AMDMatt

Very long shot but would it be possible you think that AMD would maybe sell a AIO upgrade kit with nice shroud etc.....for people who bought air cooled V64's ? Essentially just selling a V64LC minus the V64 :D

I really wanted a V64 AIO but at the time didn't have the option to get one.

I was going to do a custom watercool but now am thinking buying this instead

The Alphacool Eiswolf 240 GPX-Pro

Tell me about it. Thought I wont be missing freesync, however even if the 1080ti churns 120fps, and have set the monitor to 120hz instead of 144hz, the tearing is obvious on many fast moving scenes even in World of Tanks.
Waiting for the Samsung C32HG75 (gsync) to check it's price in comparison to the C32HG70 (freesync), before I get new monitor (which I want) or sell the 1080ti and buy a Gigabyte Vega 64 for watercooling, if price is right.

I haven't watched his vid but hardwareluxx have posted their review & the conclusion is:

looking at the pictures of the broken down card, it looks like they have a totally custom PCB, the vrm has been moved away from the core GPU, which you would think would spread the heat out and make it easier to cool, i.e. totally different contact points for GPU and VRM on the heat-sink. Still waiting for the dust to settle on all this but jebus what are they doing, can sapphire save us, if not can the 290 do another year or is it bite the bullet and pick up a 1070/ti in october

It's terrible on power draw, I'm guessing that the reason AMD didn't do better volting was due to the variance between chips, simply put some are a lot better than others. The AIO I had was only 100% stable on the lowest of the 3 power settings and that was with a brand new Corsair HX850 platinum psu. I think the rumour a month or two before release about issues and needing a new stepping were related to the C0 and C1 revisions and the C1 should have been used in all versions not just the reference air card. The C0 revision should have been scrapped not put in the water-cooled flagship because they hoped the AIO would manage the problems they had with it.
What it seems RTG have tried to do under Raja Koduri is terrible and it's gonna have had a negative impact on consumer relations that'll take years to fix.

I received my Vega 64 liquid on Friday and honestly, I'm very impressed with it. Was getting hard reboots when I first put it in after like 5 mins of gameplay. Realised my error quickly though. I daisy chained the pci-e power cable. Plugged in a separate cable to my hx850 platinum and it's been smooth sailing ever since. Buttery smooth with everything I throw at it on the monitor I bought with it (The CHG70 32"...which is absolutely stunning by the way).

If you're not stable with that power supply, have you used 2 separate cables?

I did, I initially had an EVGA G2 650 watt PSU when I got Vega so I put my old TX850 back in the rig but it kept crashing so I ordered a HX850i Platinum PSU but it was still the same with that one so I sent the card back as faulty, At that point I had a rethink on how expensive the AIO was and decided to buy the cheapest 1080 I could find at the time and wait for the non-reference cards to land.

Sorry to hear that dude. Hope you have better luck with the 1080. I would have gone that route myself but couldn't justify the extra £300 on a monitor for gsync and no hdr.
