The RX Vega 64 Owners Thread

Hey guys, been watching this thread for quite some time and finally got my vega. Sadly enough..
I am quite happy to see so many people getting one but i had so many issues with mine that is crazy.
I got a gigabyte vega 64 watercooled and right of the gate several apps would freeze the pc when getting details of the system, such as 3dmark.
It did run the games fine but to my shock there was maybe only a 20% performance increase when comparing with my 970?!? And thats with my 970 at much lower temps with a kraken g20 and an aio wirh 280 rad.

Wattman refused to save profile settings, i set turbo change tab and when go back to it its in balanced again.
Turn freesync off or on and it was mostly off. Sometimes out of the blue it would turn it off or on on ita own.

Core temps quite fine but fps on most games and benchmark scores were really not what i expected. About 15k score on firestrike 1080p default :/ maybe its my 4690k bottlenecking? Cant be as in neither benchmarks nor games does it ever go above 50% usage.
1 day after installing it im playing rainbow six siege after several hours the pc just turns off and refuses to power on after that. I place my gtx 970 back and it powers up fine again. Guess that vega just died after 1 day... To my amaze as well core never went above 60C but when i checked the actual card physically it was around the 80'sC.

Anyone else experienced any kind of similar oddities or i just got a bad card on the lottery?

Now gotta wait 15 days for replacement ans it just gor out of stock on amazon uk :(

Thanks and best of luck to any new vega owner :)
That sounds a bit poo , sorry to hear that AoD.
That card should have been annihilating your 970 and made you really happy, the temps also seem a bit high from the start.
What was the graphics score for firestike? as i only get 16/17000 with an i5 6600k, the score relies heavily on the combined and physics test which is cpu bound.
I get 25,656 on the graphics score as my best.
Keep the faith, the next LC Vega will be great!

Did you hit Apply?

It does reset back to balanced if the drivers detect a problem with the settings, but you'd have to be running something intense first to make it do that.

Well, I wouldn't recommend anyone spending as much money for a GPU on 1920x1080 resolutions. And as to Vega specifically, it doesn't really get to stretch its legs much until the workload increases. At 1080p you won't see that much of an increase on your 970, aye ... plus as you acknowledge the bottleneck also shifts way more towards the CPU at lower resolutions.
Of course i hit apply hehe :p, the issue still happened even if I tried to apply the custom setting which is crap.
Also I play at 1440p. Still same workload on both cards i feel that vega should have just blown the 970 over.

Firestrike got around 15k max. Here's an example https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/23644783? and the one with the 970 https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/23610034?
The physics score is what is hurting but shouldn't the other be higher than they are? on this one was around double the fps.

Now that I remember I was also seeing some strange visual artifacts once in a while in some games though, humm...

It says :

Brawn

Your GPU is ready to rumble, but your CPU doesn't want to play.

But i dont get much higher on my i56600k i get 29fps on the physics and 42 on the combined (OC 4.2ghz)

You are getting more than twice the score on the graphics though, weird.... What power supply are you using and are the two 8 pins running from separate rails as opposed to being split or anything?

Yeah just a simple bottleneck mixed with bad GPU lottery, Nothing out the normal performance wise if you ignore the driver issues.
I've got an i7 4790k and i still bottleneck in 1080p in most top end demanding games in CPU intensive areas by 30% and a good %10 in 1440p And as one would expect by practicly 0% in 4k,
There's one thing i've noticed looking at every youtube benchmark i can find with the vega 64 is that it bottlenecks easier than nvidia GPU's.

You're right but in games the cpu never goes over 50% usage at any times.
Using a seasonic 850W gold but connected to the gpu through a split cable. I saw many mentioning that accross the web but at the time I didn't really recall that at the time, the gpu would go to
100% usage the same. Think it could have been that?
The card did still die 1 day into the race tho :/

Don't do that.
https://seasonic.com/faq/

Even if they didn't advise against it it's not good idea:
It doubles the current per wire (and cross section) doubling voltage loss.
That could well make card's VRM work harder and make ground reference more unstable.
Also it doubles power loss in wiring wasting little additional power for nothing.

Exactly, it will cause the driver to crash, games to crash under load and hard resets to the pc.
Is anyone else unable to load this page at the AMD website or does it hate me for some reason ? http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-art...son-ReLive-Edition-17.11.4-Release-Notes.aspx
Does the same for me on firefox or chrome at the pc or on my phone, i had this problem with the last driver release also, embarrassing that they can't even make there driver page work.... doesn't give confidence in the driver software really.

No, none of those issues so far with my Vega 64 Liquid, thankfully, sounds bad, the replacement should be much better, I'm well impressed with my Vega liquid. Early days though, i need to do more gaming. And I will.

So my Vega 64 Limited edition comes today, yay, I hope :D

Anyone have any decent overclocking guides? Or guides to help lower the power/ heat, etc? Basically to make the card more efficient?

Also what apps should I get to monitor/ bench/ score the card so I know I'm going in the right direction?

I'm not a complete noob to overclocking just don't want to fill my new PC up with pointless apps before I get the decent ones.

If anyone can share their clocks would be nice too :)

This applies to Vega 64 Liquid Cooled. Probably best to follow different advice for air cooled Vegas where you want to lower voltage and balance clock speed vs low voltage.

Use Wattman, no need to use anything else.

Try these settings to start with.

State 6 core 1702 @1100mv.
State 7 core 1752 @1200mv.

HBM 1100 @1100mv.

+50% Power Limit.

Fan speed 400-3300 RPM

Target temp 60c.

Test.

If you experience artifacts, dial HBM down until they go. 1050-1100HBM is where you should aim for.

Once that is stable, increase core voltage in 12Mhz increments until games start crashing or you get display driver/dx crashes, then dial back 12mhz.

I can do around 1782Mhz with the settings above.

Using Power Save profile drops power consumption nearly third for small performance penalty.
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Radeon_RX_Vega_64/29.html

And there's manual undervolting:
https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/t...king-undervolting-information-guide.18793012/

That 900mV result pretty much matches second BIOS Power Save profile and beats primary BIOS Power Save profile:
https://www.bit-tech.net/reviews/tech/graphics/amd-radeon-rx-vega-64-and-rx-vega-56-review/4/
(only GPU consumption in those profile readings while TPU measures whole card's consumption)
