really? how does the back plate affect the coil whine?!

Coil whine is doe to some power related electronics on the PCB that vibrating. Some times these are on the backplate.
Has nothing to do with the GPU or VRAM. Give it a try, you won't lose warranty if the stickers are on the retention bracket. (put the screws back after you remove the backplate as it holds the heatsink but do not overtighten it)

ah ok. i'll have to have a look and see if i can remove 'in situ' - it's trapped behind a cpu water loop now and i'll be damned if i'm dismantling it for a bit of whine! :p

If you dont hear it with the case closed leave it.
I cannot hear it over the speakers or headphones either, so not bothering.
Also I would advice you to start using QDC on water loops. There are metalic ones also, if you do not like the EK plastic. :)

hate the look of them and they don't really work (i think) with hardline tubing. only went with a custom loop for aesthetics! will be adding the card into the loop in due course but for now i'll probably just leave as is.

One of the main reasons I went soft tubing. Hardline is so much harder to maintain. QDC's are golden though however I need to get some more. Only got one to test, now I want to get about 5 more :D

oh yea without doubt the soft tubing is easier to maintain and fit, however i just couldn't get along with how it looks. much prefer the hardline for visuals, plus it's fun to bend :D

What brand of qdc did you get? I'm going to be buying a couple myself shortly.
All my fittings are Barrow fittings. The QDC is a very strong metal unit too, though a bit stiff to break apart the first few times.

Can understand that. Hardline can look very good, though personally I actually like the soft tube look too ;)

just been having a nosey online for waterblocks for the strix and the only 'well known' one i can find is the ekwb one at stupid money (least i think it is) but a bit of deeper digging sees me finding bkyski(sp?) which seem to be reasonably well thought of(though mainly american reviews) i then discovered that i can buy a one from ther aliexpress store for about 60 quid including carriage......anyone ever used one or heard of them?
