The Sony A73/A7R3/A7S3/A9 Thread

A friend of mine has the 6D original and I own a 7D original. I do not like the limited AF points, no jog, slow focusing on the 6D, and my 7D is very good for taking quick photos, very good AF system . However noisecat 800ISO, limited DR, poor low light performance it does have its draw backs.

Just one big bonus for me on the A7iii is the eye AF and for sure it is a big cheat button. When I hand my 7D to the wife to take a picture of me or another person she hates fiddling around with selecting AF points. So many times she has missed focus on the face. Even with my Sony NEX5R which has a moveable AF point and limited face detection AF she still misses focus. The A7iii eye AF would end all that nonsense for me. Once you are home from a holiday and photos are slightly out of focus. You might as well delete the images as they are useless.

The only down side for me in getting A7iii is the cost of Sony G Master lenses. So expensive !
I know you can use the MC-11 adapter for Canon glass and if I get a A7III I would also get the adapter, and proberly a 24-70 or 24-105 Sony lense, so now a very expensive purchase.

I have watch a couple YouTube videos on camera registration and it appears Canon my be bring out 3-5 New cameras very soon. Though 2 of the 5 could just be different prototypes of the same camera.

The camera world is moving at a rapid pace !
I am not a new camera junkie and my next camera will have to last me at least 5-8 years . So I best choose wisely very soon !

Flip side to the argument...
Out of every single camera-ecosystem, I'd feel most comfortable buying Sony glass knowing their bodies are getting aggressively updated so often.
Sony have listened to their consumers as much as possible, and improved the most out of every brand.

At the end of the day, your camera body is always going to age but its the glass which is important.

Its the reason why I cant bring myself to buy into any more panasonic MFT lenses..

There is a real danger of Canon starting a completely new lens mount like they did with EF back in the 80’s. Sony seems to have settled on the E-mount after flirting with the A-mount now and putting all their R&D into it. Where Canon going with the mirrorless, whether they’ll do an adaptor or mirrorless DSLR size body, only time will tell.

I read that too in an interview DP Review did with a Canon Exec. He did also say they would not alienate the current 30 million+ EF lenses which are out there.

Doesn't sound like my A7 will be with me any time soon. I chased WEX up on a lack of order confirmation and they said that there is a huge pre-order list that is first-come first-served. Stock expected around middle of the month, but couldn't guarantee if I'd get it in the first stock run.

Anyone that wants this anytime soon might want to join a pre-order queue!

Had ago of a mates A7s today - yeah the 'old' one - amazing, loved it, SO getting an A7iii for my wedding business !!

I tested the video with sigma adapted -

1 - Eye AF don't work, it recognise a face but I can't find the button in the custom function to assign a button for Eye AF in the menu. For photo you can assign a button to activate Eye AF, I have done this to the AEL button but there is no option for that in video. I don't think this is a lens issue as that isn't even in the menu.

2 - I experience heavy banding at home with LED lights. HEAVY. Google suggests shooting in 60FPS to get round this but I can't see this in the option, I can se 25 or 50 but no 60. I know the camera is not faulty because if I point the camera outside, there is no banding, but if I continue the video and walk into the house, the banding appears.

How're those Raws Raymond?

I was going to show you…but then i can only post JPEGS so here is a link to some RAW files.

Do you have to put the camera in NTSC mode to see 24FPS & 60FPS? As my A6500 has a simlar 'feature'

Interesting thanks, face is fine as long as it tracks focus pretty reasonably and eye AF for stills is great.

Yeah banding will be the refresh rate/shutter on the video, its from the LED lights, you'd not get it as much on non LED at 25fps, 24 ideally as you want to move slower than the electrical frequency of the UK (PAL) which is intervals of 25/50 hrz - hence 25/50fps options in the UK - its basically so video work lines up with the electrical freqency of the host country, in the USA the electrical frequency (and thus lights) goes at 30/60hrz, hence the same fps - to stop flickering on tv/film...........its all a left over thing from before digital but still applies now, 24 is just a cinematic frame rate that old films origonally ran at (as am sure u know)

Anyways just wrote all this for the general forum to know.
