The Tesla Thread

I placed my order today.

What homecharging options is everyone going for?

nice - what you getting?

Made a few enquiries today - Options seem to be Zappi 2 (new and hard to source), Pod Point, Telsa own charger (but doesn't qualify for OLEV grant), Rolec and Anderson EV (wife likes this as it looks posh and not like a charging point!)

Will see over coming days who gets back to me with some quotes/ideas etc. Messaged/contacted a few installers to get ideas of lead times etc.

I ordered a SR+ in grey.

If I run it through my own LTD company come april it becomes extremely tax efficient!

Ran a quote via LV tonight for insurance - pleasantly surprised - £387 fully comp including business travel. £450 if i reduce voluntary excess to £0

I'll have to read more about it but I'd look at the Tesla charger first which I believe will charge other type 2 cars (Legacy mode) just in case you switch in future. Now the smart requirement is in place the Tesla charge is comparatively priced and probably subsidised by Tesla to achieve this.

I had a Rolec type 2 installed before the smart requirement and that was £195.00 for the charger unit with OLEV grant but is up to double that now. My Rolec slightly over performs at 8kw and achieves 33 mi/hr charging. I've seen that once before on a Zoe and seems to be related to the higher AC onboard charger limits in the Tesla and Zoe.

So my choices would be Tesla, Zappi 2 (especially with solar) or maybe the EO Mini Pro cus it's ah so mini!

The Tesla charger will work with any car in both modes. The mode Tesla tell you to leave it in has an extra handshake for diagnostics and firmware updates through a Tesla car. It will still work with non Tesla’s in this mode. It just takes a few seconds for the additional handshake to time out and start charging.

You can disable the extra handshake on a dip switch under the cover, it will still charge your Tesla or other EV now with the delay removed.

There is also nothing stopping you from using free Tesla destination chargers in any EV.

Why wouldn't you go for another Rolec?

The Rolec seems a good idea because of the IP rating. They all seem to be around £400 anyway so there's no getting away from that annoyingly.

Rolec always sold the idea of a modular design so really it should be possible to upgrade it and despite some cheap parts failing on previous installs mine has been perfect for a year. So I will probably just clip the cable under the front window and install a wall hanger as the charge is now on the opposite side to the previous i3.

I do like the idea of having a Tesla charger for any specific features they might add. Also the Rolec tends to stand out a bit by the front door and I reckon the neatest install would be the EO mini with a custom 2m cable installed the other side of the car as mentioned.

Quick research and the Rolec seems to get mixed comments because of the modular design but the "Smart" module requires some of the standard electronics (Type A RCD) to be installed externally to the charging unit. So I reckon the Rolec unit will likely incur more additional costs (they supply the RCD loose in the box) to the web quoted prices so worth checking. I had £65.00 additional cost because my domestic unit was already full so I might already have the extra mounting box ready for the RCD.

Also I saw a vid on installing an OpenEVSE wireless module in my current unit which give me "Smart" features but not the grid control the Gov. wants.

Ordered my SR+ through NHS Leasing three weeks ago. No communication yet but I'm not alone.

My Octavia vRS goes back end of November so fingers crossed I get it before then.

Seems crazy cheap through salary sacrifice, my vRS costs me nearly £600 a month in fuel, ved, pcp and insurance.

M3 will be £422 plus electric until April when it'll be £311 plus electric.

Oh right.

Here's another question, apart from the smart features why would you get a Rolec or other charging point and not just have a blue 32a plug ont he wall?
