The Tesla Thread

What ICE car is it then? It’s not a converted ICE car. Have a look at your Ioniq. It has ICE mounting points. You won’t find those on an eTron.

They haven’t had to contort the battery like on the Ioniq because the eTron was never, ever, going to be anything other than a BEV.

What are you still arguing? You stated it is a ground up BEV, when it isn't, my exact "That is what happens when you shoehorn BEV technology into an ICE designed car" maybe if I'd said ICE design platform you'd not have bothered arguing about nothing.

Maybe it’s a platform that was designed for ICE and beyond ? ‘End of conversation’ why add that. The ioniq is some budget EV

Hey all. I'm currently deciding what to go for with my next company car and have shortlisted it to the Model 3 LR and the Kia E-niro. Now obviously they are quite different! The main thing putting me off the M3 at the moment is the boot - my wife has a Yaris so my car will be the main family car. I was pleasantly surprised that the boot is very deep, but I am concerned about the size of the loading height (if only it was a hatchback!). I go fishing, so do have quite a lot of stuff that needs to fit in. I did notice the back doors open quite wide though. How do you find the boot space on the whole? Manageable or do you find it can be a problem?

Why are you both arguing about Etron in Model 3 Tesla thread....

That was my point, there should have been no argument but in typical WJA style they had to try and have one, I tried to end it but, well, you see the result. I suppose you should also ask why the person felt they needed to mention their e-tron in the Tesla Model 3 thread, right? :)

Actually, the eTron platform is a ground-up EV. It's just not a very efficient EV. They purposely didn't make it aero because they wanted something that looked like a 'normal' Audi Qn model. And they used crappy battery technology, the BMS is out of the ark and the motors aren't the best.

Actually, thats not true. The etron battery is a monster, have you seen the charge profile?

Actually the e-tron 50/55 are both MLB Evo platform heavily adapted to fit the BEV electronics, battery etc.

Actually, thats quite correct.

Back to thread, would really like to try a model 3 P out. Probably quite a machine being more compact than the Model S and hopefully a small improvement in fit and finish lands it appropriate for the price point.

Apologies for talking about a Model 3 on the Model 3 thread ;) but to answer this.

We've found it fine for fitting in large pram with a few bits around it and had no problem loading the boot full of stuff when I drove it across Europe last summer. I'd prefer if it was a hatchback but we've not really struggled to get anything in to the boot that can fit in the boot. Also found the under boot storage very useful for filling up with booze on the way home :D

How's the M 3 parallel parking capability - I can see that being a useful feature
in the search for free parking today @Cambridge, I was obliged to get into a space, perhaps 1m at each end, not too bad;
but, you had reverse in from a single width double parked road with about <2foot either side of the car.

Auto drive capability - Teslas perhaps leading on (alongside waymo) still looks like reports of its birth are widely exaggerated,
especially for urban driving with bicycle/pedestrian 'anticipation' (earlier link on Tesla capabilities),
so in the market place where likes of ioniq 5 will have similar efficiency I'm wondering what the USP of tesla becomes.

Hadn't considered this auto-park application

Smart Charger Use
Tesla has an immediate use for the ability for a car to move in a parking lot. Their superchargers are often full, and when full, people either wait in line, or have to rush back from meals to move their cars when done. If the cars could do basic moves without supervision, that would enable a few useful moves:

  1. First, if a car is fully charged, the person waiting for that spot could be told to unplug it. Then the car could leave the spot and find an ordinary parking space, freeing up the charger.
  2. Next, a person who arrives at a full lot could park close to the chargers and get in line digitally. When a slot opens up, their car could move into that spot. The next person arriving or leaving would be asked to plug it in — the person arriving certainly has a motive to do that, since they are in line after it. (The person leaving would do it for brownie points.)

It’s not quite that simple - in the early days they also sold a p- (performance minus the performance pack) means they would have aero wheels, standard brakes, suspension and no spoiler.

The p- have the same power but a lower top speed and no track mode IIRC.

The screen in the middle will tell you what the car is.

Also watch out for people advertising ’full self driving computer’ they likely are just referring to the capability, not that it actually has it enabled.

I have this car, the stealth, Other than the red line under the dual motor badge it looks identical to the LR with 18 inch tyres I think. If you are shopping for this car, you would need to check the software to tell for sure.

It does have track mode.

It's very rare though. They only made it for a short spell.
