The thread which sometimes talks about RDNA2

@EastCoastHandle many posters on here have not touched an AMD card for more than three generations so I would put lots in that ball park. ;)

But what is the best way to justify these expenses to the other half? I don't know the best way to approach the subject. She often physically assaults me and I can't remember the safety word. I am a loud screamer - I don't know if this helps.

Get her a kitten/puppy/tarantula anything that will distract her during the crucial weeks till it blows over. ;)

I agree, this generation should have been about building mindshare; then they can position themselves as premium when RDNA3 drops. Nvidia are in a big architectural heavy compute hole, and it's going to take some time to dig themselves out. Don't know what the BOM for each SKU is, but they could have dropped the 5800xt in at $599 and 5800 in at $499; and given the AIB some room to make some margin with coolers. Pretty sure there's not much love lost between the partners and Nvidia atm.
Yes the pricing could have been slightly better but it has been a long time since you could build an ALL AMD system that competes at all levels. And dont forget both the new Xbox and Ps5 systems powered by AMD. Thats building mindshare and has lots of potential for system builds and bundles.

You can't guarantee that is the case as we have no ray tracing numbers on either AMD GPU yet, suffice to say if its being made in co-operation with Microsoft and the DX12U team, and it's also being utilised in next gen consoles, it should be on par if not better than nvidias offering. Afterall, all RT really is, is a fancy complex calculator.

If it was equal or better they would have shown benches just like raster.

Also its not as simple as you try to make it seem, otherwise pascal would have been just as fast as some turing in RT, not 4-6 times slower. Also 5700xt could have had RT just as good as turings, whereas in reality it wasnt even enabled since it would have been a slideshow just like pascal.

Looking at a 5900x and a 6800xt upgrade. Forgive me if this has already been addressed!

If you've saved the money up and are not raiding the pension fund for it I can't see any objection. Perhaps sell it as a once in X years purchase. Maybe suggest she treats herself to a new hoover or something :p

People wasn't expecting this shake up :D The best thing we all win here.

I'd say the way the 3080 was engineered into a better cooling setup and the 3090 basically being mounted in a 3 slot radiator to allow heat + performance says nvidia WERE expecting something like this ;)
The 3090 looks like a "we win!" card and (over) engineered to hit that mark.

So the 5700XT had a 1755Mhz game clock and a 1905Mhz boost clock. Can 5700XT owners let us know what the card actually runs at in games? It might help clear up roughly what to expect with the new cards.

I recommend not trying to justify them, but hiding them. The only difficulty is explaining what the packages are that keep arriving. Something many of us married men struggle with I suspect.

Last I had was an RX580 so yes, a couple of generations
I really don't see why pointing out a quirk of their marketing jargon and the risks of taking said marketing without a pinch of salt has to be taken as a slight against people though. Almost feels like people want to feel attacked

The gap has been closed. nvidia went from a smug 2080Ti 30%+ superiority to a 3090 5%+- gap. People cant complain, now its time to let the figures do the talking..

Order the parts and then go and take your beating. As long as all the parts arrive before she shes the Credit Card statement and cancels the order, you can probably keep the parts.

Something else doesnt make sense to me

You guys were promising that RDNA2 would scale like a beast and 80CU would beat the 3090 - you guys never knew about RAGE or SAM. So why is it that without RAGE and SAM it doesn't beat the 3090, even though it has a really high clock speed, more IPC than RDNA 1 and double the CU of RDNA1. Something is off, why are the RDNA2 cards scaling so poorly?

Rage mode = overclocking the card.
Smart memory= you need 5series am4 board and 5 series zen 3 CPU. Whole ecosystem.

6800 faster than 3070 without RT
6800xt on par with 3080 without RT
6900xt slower that 3090 without RT

There was talk of a 6900xtx as well which I'm guessing is to counter the inevitable 3080ti.

The screaming only spurs her on

Well I'm pretty hyped for these now... consider me onboard the train. I'm keen to see the direct comparison to nvidia in reviews, that will be tune clincher on which card to get plus availability. I've zero interest in ray tracing, so it's not a consideration or selling point for me.
