The "Top Gear", Season 24/25/26 thread

Yes but if they are relying on GPS or other "cloud" system, it's one big single point of failure. Plus there's a lot more other variables that can break. Just a sensor going wrong could potentially cause a crash.

I dont disagree, but the ability to detect system failures and then take corrective action is already done in many cars, prime example being engine management, obviously some do it better than others and there is always potential for something to go wrong but you can / should mitigate most of the risks as best as possible

Yea but sometimes the system that detect failure fail :p Very rare, but when your dealing with 10s of millions of units, even 0.5% chance is a lot.

Theres been a few cases where cruise control has become stuck on in the past. Imagine if something like that happened in a self driving car with no manual controls! It's basically a slow death.

really enjoying this series. as already mentioned would love to see Harris and Sabine go at it on a proper circuit(think the ring would be a tad unfair given how many laps Sabine has under her belt)

Chris is pretty ****** good on the ring mind if there was anyone who could compete with Sabine he'd be in that list.

Everyone dissing robo cars and autonomous cars are all basing their reasoning on technology and sensors etc available today.

60 Years ago man had not been into space at all. Forty years ago there were no personal computers. Even ten years ago there was no such thing as a smartphone. Now we are pretty much all walking around with more computing power in our pockets than they had when putting a man on the moon.

Technology is increasing and improving at an exponential rate, everyone dissing robo cars and autonomous cars are all basing their reasoning on technology and sensors etc available today.

If you look at what was available 20-30 years ago compared to what we have now, and then predict forward to what could be possible, available and usable technology 20-30 years from now, remembering the rate at which advancements are being made, then all of your arguments will pretty much be moot points.

Technology will improve, autonomous cars will happen, and will be safe, and we will all be in them, as there will be no alternative.

We just have to face the facts.

Sabine would decimate him on the 'Ring.

Send them both to Laguna Seca in something middle of the line, 430 Scud or something.

sabines won the 24hr nurburgring race twice and has something ridiculous like 30k laps to her name, she knows that track better than your average man knows his manhood.

that said Harris has been through a few Nurburgring 24h events and is still an accomplished driver but the Ring would easily give home advantage to the crazy german lady.

would be a fantastic bit of tv especially if they could do something with proper motorsport (remember the old TG britcar entry?) get the 2 of them to enter a few rounds of 750mc events. would be great publicity for grassroots motorsport (tv exposure and big names dropping in for a round and would make for a brilliant segment or 6 :)

Any idea what her fastest time is? I know Chris has taken atleast 2 cars around on stock configuration that pretty much matched the manufacturers times with a ring specific setup!

Yes he can.. I couldn't stop laughing at his legs though, like tree trunks in those jeans.

Get Rory off.

Thoroughly enjoyed the challenge, as an offroader (bikes) I know how dangerous and sketchy it is.

be comparing apples to oranges unless you can find times for identical cars,

needless to say Sabines won the nurburgring 24 twice harris managed a 4th place

Top Gear will mess up a race between these two, we all know this............ it has to a one on one race in two identical cars (no other cars on the Ring), any fast car will do.........BUT NO THIS IS TOO BORING; SO THEY'LL SCREW IT UP

The safety thing is not a good argument either. Computers go wrong more often than people do. There are only a few self driving cars in the world and already they have been involved in accidents :/

Erm, no. They are having accidents at a much lower rate than humans and this is while we and they are still learning. Give them 5 more years and they will be incredibly safe. I think they are just setting standards for cars to be able to talk to each other too, so things will get even safer if that comes in.

That isn't really a good comparison either though - her two wins were against very different competitors in an earlier format - against a similar setup to when Chris came 4th she managed 6th and 9th but not directly comparable either - none the less the makeup of the other drivers has some implications.

They should get them into something like the Lancia Delta Integrale - reasonably fast but without too much in the way of modern assists, etc. it would be kind of boring for them to do it in some modern performance cars.

Sabine is so annoying. She tries way too hard to appear fun.

she's intense and mad.......usually mad people have a strong sense of humour but for some reason she doesn't, maybe she's just shy.
Rory is the weak link though, he's bullied by the others.

but kill the fun of driving, no thanks.

I suspect that as a woman who has spent most of her life on a circuit dominated by men, her sense of humour is probably a bit dark for TV which is why she seems a bit awkward as she's holding back.
