my main concern is what could happen if say UK dips into a economic crisis...

By saying, that immigration causes no problems and that all the problems are cause by people who dislike immigration, or are just racist, is a pretty stupid view point to take, just like saying immigrants are the sole cause of economic problems or loss of Britishness, or that tony blair is to blame for the black death etc etc, blaming just one thing and steadfastly refusing that the people who hate immigration, because they hate immigrants, may be right in some way, though often for the wrong reasons.
