Don't think it's a question of building capabilities... It how it's manufactured. I use the Scottish wicking technique for everything and separating/pulling apart the cotton strands is infinitely easier with CB then it is with Muji or any other cotton pads. Not too mention that I find CB that little bit fluffier out the packet.
I've used the 'Scottish Roll' method before and I've found it only works with RDA's in my experience. You need that fast wicking capability for those high wattage builds.
I don't find I have to manipulate the Jap Cotton really though, just remove the top and bottom layer. Then use a set of tweezers or something to thin out the strands, trimming the excess.
