Poll: The Vega Review Thread.

What do we think about Vega?

  • What has AMD been doing for the past 1-2 years?

  • It consumes how many watts and is how loud!!!

  • It is not that bad.

  • Want to buy but put off by pricing and warranty.

  • I will be buying one for sure (I own a Freesync monitor so have little choice).

  • Better red than dead.

He is right.

I totally agree with his stance, except if AMD do restock at 499$ standalone, and in decent quantities and throughout the life of the card (until price cut), if AMD do do that then they are in the green and anything over MSRP is up to retailers
But will we even really know from this point in, if there's a price hike on the standalone, if it is due to AMD or retailers?... Because I do expect a price hike from retailers soooo...

Didn't read the comments but I would imagine Hitler popped up a couple of times in the comments he always does, because Godwin's Law

Godwin's Law officially no longer applies, as confirmed by Mr Godwin himself. But to explain further would be a bigly thread drift.

Unsurprising the reviewers have reacted in this way. Don't cry too much for them though; it's not as if the controversy is going to hurt their bottom line.

Are you suggesting that people making money from youtube views... are seeking youtube views?

Grown men complaining that all this time they were getting thousands of pounds of free hardware the companies were exploiting them.

Does not compute.

Ha! Though once the reviewers are above a certain size, the value of the review samples is less significant; they'd be hurt much more by a hit to their credibility, and that's what their pain is ostensibly about.

They do? How come so many I've viewed have said they've to send it back...

its okay when nvidia does it. amd should have copied the founders pricing strategy

At least nvidia have a card that actually performs when they launch a shiny new card. And no i don't agree with the FE strategy, however they did give a lower recommended rrp. Which vendors did not follow.

What do AMD have with VEGA? A card 15 months late, barely matching the opposition with double the TDP? And AMD launch and price it like this?

They get to keep nothing?

Oh well, they've been doing it just for the early access to get their youtube videos up first then.

Still pants on head special to say how shocked they are that the companies shelling out for this are using them.

I think the really expensive stuff they send back? Most I've viewed they said they only get to keep it for 3 - 5 days and have to send it back. Keyboards, mice, headsets, ram yadda yadda they get to keep.

Heck some reviewers got fancy steering wheels, direct drive and other fancy pedals to review but never got to keep them. Some did with a lot of persuasion but most don't get to keep the stuff.

Even Jay had to do a lot of hiney kissing to get the latest Titans for Terry Crews build. That was before when he already got the last Titans from them. He even spoke about it on one of his videos and from the sounds of it NVIDIA was seriously cheesed off with him.

Suppose it depends on the product and also the reviewer, but jay himself isnt shy that his whole set wall of gpus is cards he was given for review and never had to send back, he even boasted on wan that nvidia just sent him 2 titan cards just because.

Jay said most of his inventory he had to buy himself? Some of the stories he has said then versus that WAN video is not adding up. He had to go through a lot of hassle to get the Titans.

No a lot of the new stuff is, like amd didnt even bother to send him the 500 series, he had to buy those himself, but nvidia will happily throw gpus at him. But who can say, its not like before every review he goes and this i bought, this i was given, this i get to keep, this i have to send back.

Edit for the bit not quoted, i agree, a lot of it doesnt add up, like how vega makes his threadripper pc worse, how exactly ?

Vega reviews can still work, its this card does this, this is the spreadsheet, this is the fps, this is the mins, the max, the lows and the frame times. this is what it feels like, this is the info you need, do what you want. No price point stays the same, cards get old, new versions come out, aibs go to war with each other and miners fluctuate prices.

If you had to redo your review ever time a price changed you would only ever review about 3 cards,

I cant believe how badly AMD have conducted this launch.

No problem with what AMD have done in regards to increasing the RRP, the problem is why do it in such a inconspicuous and deceitful fashion?

why not wait 1 month later and do this and why not clearly let everyone of their customers know this will happen eventually. Nobody knew that after few minutes the RRP will change from $499 to $599. It almost looks like this was designed to makes their cards look more recommendable by review channels. At $499 you can make a pitch for the card but at $599 you have to be AMD mad to buy them. What is even worse is that they release statements denying this and trying to switch blame onto retailers and AIC/B partners.

right now the pricing of the card makes it hard for gamers to buy it but if they can sell them at this price then good for them. I still support them still and would have bought a handful of cards if they were £450-499 price range but at £578.99 they are not worth this price.

Looks like my long streak of AMD cards (coming in from Matrox cards) is soon coming to an end. 7950 holding out still, and even if I upgrade, the only AMD card is a RX480/580 8GB. And that's assuming price is acceptable when I do. Can't believe the Vega launch was nearly as bad as the Matrox Parhelia; had high hopes for it. :(
