Poll: The Vega Review Thread.

What do we think about Vega?

  • What has AMD been doing for the past 1-2 years?

  • It consumes how many watts and is how loud!!!

  • It is not that bad.

  • Want to buy but put off by pricing and warranty.

  • I will be buying one for sure (I own a Freesync monitor so have little choice).

  • Better red than dead.

TNA bought my old card and I was also impressed with the heat and noise. I did come from ref cooled Titan X's though, so I am probably not the best judge when noise is concerned, as anything is better than a ref cooler. I now have the MSI Gaming X 1080Ti with the Frozr cooler and whilst it is slightly quieter than the Gigabyte, I can't really say there is much in it but then again, I have my comp under my desk tucked to the back, so it is generally inaudible regardless of what is in it :)

That says quite a bit that your 1080Ti is slightly quieter considering 1080Ti is a higher tdp card. Also my case is very close to me and is not sealed, so it is easy to hear differences.

By the way, hope opethdisciple does not get the wrong idea, it is a great card. I was just talking about the acoustics :)
 
I'm quite disappointed in Vega, It seems like a beefed up Fury X to me, Especially considering AMD said and I quote "AMD Radeon RX Vega Performance Looks Great Compared To GTX 1080 Ti and Titan Xp".

I agree. I've been waiting to buy one for nearly a year and have been very uninspired.

Given that Vega is about the same speed as Fury, clock for clock, it doesn't make sense given the node shrink and 'improved' architecture. Something is not quite right (other than the high temps!).

In regard to the Ti and XP, they obviously have a demonstrable use case where Vega performance is extremely competitive, CMAA springs to mind.

I suspect they'll sell for somewhere between 1080 and 1080Ti pricing.

Now that undervolting is working and they're faster in gaming than a 1080 FE at between stock 1070 and 1080 power draw, there's little prospect of 'reasonable' prices.

Miners are going to have an absolute field day, now that we've seen how big the power draw reduction is in gaming. It will be absolutely YUGE in mining with an underclocked core.

Haha. When did they say that? :p

I bet that Vega is meant to be up there with Titan XP but something just went wrong for AMD on the way. I always expected around that performance and probably so did they coming from a Fury X.

I quite agree at the £450 price point... I wouldn't go so far as £550 though but that is probably just me but I do take into account that HBM isn't cheap, so AMD's margins are going to be tight but a 1080 competitor at £550 and then some doesn't strike me as a decent price this late in the game.
 
I quite like that there seems to be a fair amount of excitement/interest around the fact that you can now undervolt Vega. It feels like only a few days ago that in response to people complaining about the power draw we were being told things like power draw is irrelevant as it costs almost nothing and people complaining about everyone being hippies and wanting to save the planet. Now all of a sudden it's interesting and you get good reductions and it helps prevent throttling (which apparently wasn't an issue before, even less so once 3rd party coolers are released).

Getting mixed signals around whether Vega drawing lots of power is an issue or not...
 
In all fairness, I could not give two monkeys how much HBM costs, its all about the performance offered. If the HBM costs are large and performance benefits aren't great then its an incredibly poor choice by AMD.

Not an issue for me power draw never has and never will. all I care about is the Numbers and Price and sadly that price is to much for me. Waiting for AIB cards and hoping some drops £550 is where I want to see could push close to £600 but that is very much my max..
I have a Knife on CSGO worth £280 lol could sell for around £200 might just do that for towards VEGA Water cooler.

Vega in not built for gaming, its a workstation chip brought to gaming section. Vega FE rolls Radeon Pro Duo (Fury) in marinade and eats it for breakfast in purpose it was meant to do.

My view on VEGA is I think we need to wait and see what games can perform like once built using VEGA features.. FARCRY 5 for example is known to be using VEGA HBCC and FP16 so it will be very interesting to see what the performance is like in that Title.

I read an interesting post on Reddit other day about HBCC and why right now its a pointless feature to bench with older games. The games we play today are still using 1080p assets and are only upscaled to 4k. Once games start using True 4k assets that is a massive amount of Memory needed 200GB+ Games will be the norm this is where HBCC will really help..
