The "what do you think of Pink Floyd?" thread

How could you listen to it without picking up on that? Even the first track:

"What have we done, Maggie what have we done?
What have we done to England?
Should we shout, should we scream
'What happened to the post war dream?'
Oh Maggie, Maggie what have we done?"

I mean no offence at all, but reading comments in this thread and threads like this about other bands or whatever, i am always thinking the same thing when i read comments like "depressing" and "i was bored/find them boring".
How liitle must be going on in your mind if you can be depressed/bored by a song!?;)

I generally like Pink Floyd. Wish You Were Here is probably my favourite album and possibly my favourite song as well:)

a band with more vision and skill than every modern band put together and then some...

there is a documentry around about the making of dark side, what they did with the tech available was stunning and this is why is still sounds fresh today... what with early sequencers and rooms full of tape loops

the thing with dark side, it can be depressing, but also uplifting and enlightening... the album is almost a living thing, where as 99% of carp these days is lifeless background music.

david gilmour is also one hell of a guitar player... his style seems very laid back and almost effortless, and he is certainly the god of string bending

edit: shame roger waters can't sing :(

The only song I like by Cohen is Stranger Song. And only the performance on the Julie Felix show. Belting performance.

As for Pink Floyd. I like them as much as I like the Beatles. And John Lennon was a dirty IRA supporting ****. I'd spit on him if he was still alive.

Piper at the Gates of Dawn is immense, superb album. Everything after Syd Barrett I have no interest in, all pretty overrated imo. Syd Barrett's two solo albums, again, superb. I'm more of a Barrett fan than a Pink Floyd fan.

Not being old enough to see the Pulse concert at the time is probably one of the only thing that annoys me about when i was born, utterly amazing concert and most of the music is good too.

Too many good songs to name a favourite. Don't know about any of the fuss around Waters, seems rubbish to me, certainly from the singing side. Gilmour is far superior.

Dark Side is a fantastic album. I really must listen to them more again. For some reason, I keep forgetting about them. (probably too far down the "artist list". ;))

Best band ever.

Animals is vastly unrelated, Live at Pompeii (even though some of the songs were recorded in a studio afterwards) is a masterpiece film. Gilmour is a minor deity with the guitar, he makes it look effortless and produces such a great sound. I could go on.

I love Floyd, although the very early stuff is a little difficult to listen to (several species of small animals gathered in a cave grooving to a pict???). However, DSoTM, WYWH, Animals and The Wall are all classics. I also love Final Cut. It's very much a dry run for Waters solo classic Pros And Cons Of Hitch Hiking, that is my all time favourite album.

I've got tickets to see Roger Waters The Wall in Manchester next Saturday ... can't wait :D

Best band in the world for me. Seen them live in 81, 88, 89 and twice in 94. Seen Dave Gilmour solo as well in 84 and about 5 years ago.

In fact I'm off to see Roger Waters next Saturday at the MEN.
