***The Wine Thread***

A lot of those Laithwaites Sunday Times wines seem to be rated very highly which always makes me dubious.

Although i had this one Saturday and it was fairly decent. If they're all like this then at £4 a bottle i'll be happy!

https://www.vivino.com/GB/en/casal-branco-lobo-e-falcao-wolf-falcon-tinto/w/2468359?year=2020

Think I said before but for me most of the Vivino ratings are too high, I like the platform not really the ratings, I tend to check elsewhere to get an idea.

The price of champagne this year has sky-rocketted :( Last year for Xmas i was picking up bottles of fairly decent stuff (Ruinart Rose for £45). This year its £65-75.

Gosset still £32 on wine society in cases of 6.

Cheers, just picked up two bottles of Gosset as i have not tried it before.
  • Gosset Grand Rose Brut NV Champagne
  • Gosset Grand Blanc de Blancs Brut
  • 2 x Ruinart Rosé
  • Lady Gaga: Dom Perignon 2010 Vintage Champagne
  • Billecart-Salmon Brut Rose NV Champagne
Christmas day sorted :)

I joined TWS recently, I purchased 7 bottles recently, 6 being around £7-£9 a bottle, and used the free £20 towards a more expensive bottle.

Not tried any yet. Good experience so far with them, super quick delivery as well.

Do you have any recommendations, I like red wine mostly, Rioja, Malbec. and don't mind a dry white.

The expensive (for me) was a bottle of Muga Rioja.

Gosset BdB is absolutely wonderful.
For the money it's very very good. I really rate the Delamotte BdB but it's about 45-8 per bottle so you can't knock that price.

I haven't bought anything special for this year tbf. Weird on your own, just not feeling it as much. I have spent my money elsewhere lol and that being said, I still get told "we need to split the wine" so I'll need to hide some key bottles before that happens. No chance she's having a couple I spent ******* ages finding. She never put the work into that **** :P

Might have a bottle of Louis 242 for Christmas though. Seems like the thing to do.

I'd just recommend trying out the society's own wines, they are usually well priced and a decent wines. I'm not really a big Rioja drinker so haven't tried many on there. While perhaps not the cheapest I have really enjoyed an Australian Malbec from them, well worth a try. https://www.thewinesociety.com/product/merite-wrattonbully-malbec-2016

Thanks, one perhaps for my wishlist, I normally only spend £7-9 on a bottle of wine. I have got a few bottles of the society's labelled wines to try.

I have enjoyed their own Beaujolais villages, its a bit lighter in style than the wines you mentioned though. Still worth trying at £8, best to serve this one slightly chilled think it tells you that on the bottle and if you like it there are plenty more £8-12 Beaujolais on the website to try.

Nice will try this one next if it’s still available. Thanks

Just opened this for a evening tipple - it’s like a sweet Cognac wine apéritif or a more subtle.

Le chai de la grande cote “Pineau des Charente” 17.5% ABV

Given I’ve not had much wine this year I thought I’d check what I have - 2 bottles of red - a Moulton Cadet and a Margaux 2015. So emergency reserves :/

Small lower cost restock:
* Ch. Fayat - Pomerol - 2018
* Charles & Fred - Coate du Rhone
* Ch. La Tour Carnet - 2017
* Ch. Haut Tayac - Margaux - 2019
* Ch. Haut Lalande

So some reds for the odd big steak entertaining as covid allows. I’ll bury those in the dark for a while.
I’ll probably order in some fresher wines online ahead of time if I want something a little less heavy.

Not sure if anyone has seen it, but there's a new wine subscription company out called Good Pair Days

The wines themselves, don't seem brilliant to be fair based on reviews on Vivino, however there's a reasonable looking free gift with the first box and it's not overly expensive so i've take a put. Their per bottle prices seem inline with other retailers too so not crazy markup.

They're also the first place i've seen which sells "Orange" wine. I remember seeing it on a TV show once and thinking it sounded brilliant, but had never seen it anywhere. I've given it a punt.

This thread has been quiet for too long. So i thought i'd come in and celebrate that Vivino now allows ratings at a fractional level. I was always annoyed having to choose between 3.5/4/4.5 when i felt something didn't deserve the 4, but was better than a 3.5.

We've also recently stumbled upon a superb wine shop which specialises in Italian wines, which is convenient given that's our preference. Came across this which was stonking and (to me), far better than the 3.9 rating it gets

Also got this for £9 which was superb value

Website here if anyone wants to check it out
