***The Wine Thread***

When I was younger my mum used to buy wine before Xmas dinner and I remember it made me really hungry instantly.

the wines were called Niersteiner and Piersporter. Both German. You cant seem to get them in supermarkets any more, but is Riesling a suitable substitute?
To cut a longer explanation short, if you go and buy a German Reisling at around the same price, you'll probably get a similar styled wine. Googling Piesporter Wine still shows plenty of places selling it.

I did a stock check yesterday after buying some more BBQ wines and beer for this year. (*). I forgot the birthday party last year.. here's a list that I found..

Hi pals,

Wanting to treat someone to a bottle of champagne to celebrate something. Is the following decent for £40, or is there something better in the up to £50 bracket?

POL ROGER BRUT RÉSERVE

Pol Roger is decent. Reasonable offer on Bollinger and Veuve there as well. Any Champagne is usually well received!!

agree to differ, it is one of the nicer wines i have had in the last year, other decent wines i have tried and enoyed in the last year are the Most Wanted MW red, Ravenswood zinfandel and Whispering Angel Rose

Holy thread revival batman!

We're finally (hopefully) going to be in our new house in around a month and we were going to treat ourselves to some decent champagne as we never seem to drink it anymore and just stick to local cava. My wife fancied the Ruinart BdB and i was just about to order a bottle and was fairly shocked at the price. Seems it's jumped up a lot since i last used to buy it (admittedly quite some time ago)

I'm debating vetoing her and getting the Delamotte BdB instead, but i've a feeling the last bottle of Delamotte we got was a bit disappointing despite previous ones always being great. Maybe i just buy both :p

Anyone else got any stand outs i need to be considering which represent better value than the Ruinart?

Edit - Ooops got carried away. I've wanted this ever since i saw it in a deli in Rome in 2012ish. I've looked online a few times (even got someone in here to find it for me i think but then never bought it) and it's been sat in my bookmarks for years at various retailers showing no stock in the hopes it'd be available.

Spotted it here. By all accounts it's a rubbish website that doesn't update stock so i'm not 100% confident of it being delivered but i figured i didn't want to keep delaying and missing out entirely!

That is a LOT to pay for a sabre! It's £62 without the sabre in Waitrose (I appreciate there may not be an equivalent El Waitrose in Spain!). The Bollinger Grand Annee is nice at that sort of money - definitely not an every day wine!!

Had a lovely Veuve Clicquot 2015 to celebrate our anniversary (we got married in 2015) at the weekend. Tesco delivered that for £67 (think there was an offer on).

Usual go-to NV champagne is Piper Heidsieck which is very reliable considering the price point - around Christmas it can still be had for £22 a bottle with special offers.

Yeah, i agree it is a lot. Especially when real high end Sabres are a similar price point like this

I actually went with the Grand Annee with the sabre which came in at €288 plus €30 for shipping. As you say expensive, but at least i finally get the sabre. I did actually also spot the sabre on it's own at a 2nd hand reselling site for €90 which i'm partly tempted by if my main purchase doesn't go through.

So the above set wasn't available as per a lot of negative reviews about that company. Glad i found the used one on that marketplace. €40 shipping was a bit steep and i do wonder if i'd have been better with something from a proper knife place but i've always been attached to this Bollinger edition, and the fact i've been banging on about it makes it a lot easier to get the wifes blessing vs just buying something different!

Back on the hunt for champagne. Quite tempted by this, it's pretty spendy but feels novel enough to justify the celebration. Just not sure if it's a bit gimmicky and i'd be better focusing that money on something better

Then need to find something slightly cheaper to christen the sabre :D

Just go for the Bollinger Grand Annee at that money! Get the sabre another time!

Practice your sabre technique on local cava.

Well the Sabre got bought from the Italian market. Think my chances are diminishing by the day if not.

Ended up with the Ruinart BdB. Safe call really as we knew we like it. Then got a little carried away with a Delamotte and Gosset too along with some fancy looking Primitivos!
