The Wire appreciation thread

I liked Proposition Joe, he always came out with fantastic thought provoking lines. :p

I'm a bit sad it's finished on BBC, I'm hoping there will be lots or reruns. Channel 4 should do the same with the Sopranos rather than the garbage they put on most late nights.

Anyone who watched it from start to finish on BBC2 what did you think?

Currently on the 3rd Episode of Season 5. Didn't like it at the start and it took me basically to the start of Season 4 to really get into. Love it now.

I must start watching this.

I am without good TV since I finished watching The Shield which is the crime / police drama I have seen so far.

If you liked the Shield chances are you'll like The Wire. Personally I preferred The Wire as it felt more realistic and gritty. Watch it! :p

I also found it difficult to get into but thats because they actually develop characters.

First TV show in a long time where I actually had to pay attention to what was being said.

Lots of things going on. :)

Has anyone found a show good enough to fill void The Wire left? I gave The Shield a go but it's a bit too soap opera-ish for my tastes. Season 2 was good though.

I don't think there is any show that could fill the void. If you've not seen Dexter, Breaking Bad or Deadwood they may be worth a look. :)

I thought James Remar was good in Dexter, I've not seen Breaking Bad. Deadwood looks like the kind of thing I could get into but the few episodes I watched had huge amounts of dialogue that made little-no sense to me.

Have you seen Homicide: Life on the Street, The Corner or Carnivale? These all caught my eye but I've not seen any of them yet.

Oh I've seen Carnivale, excellent show and story. If you liked shows like American Gothic you'll like Carnivale. Deadwood just like the Wire takes a few episodes to get into, Ian McShane makes that show, incredible acting in it, lots of cursing too. :D I'd definitely recommend Deadwood. I've not seen The Corner (yet) or Homicide: Life on the Street but they both look good so I'm looking into getting them soon.

I never saw American Gothic.

I'm tempted just to blind buy Homicide, Corner and Deadwood. I've not splurged on DVDs in a couple of months, more or less.

The Corner is great for Wire aficionados, lots of familiar faces in unfamiliar circumstances and a more detailed look at the addicts stories.

Deadwood is definitely worth a watch too, though it'd be nothing without Al Swearengen, Ian Mcshane's character.

I saw a few episodes from the first season and I was surprised by how good Lovejoy was. It's a shame about Olyphant though. Does he have that bewildered expression on his face throughout the show's entire run?

Gritting his teeth, staring the other cast members down with those dead eyes.

I was glad to see William Sanderson (Blade Runner) in it. I thought his performance made for an enjoyable watch.

Whats even better is that snoop has done time for real. If you google her a little, you will read that while filming the wire, she was still dealing drugs on the street etc.

Felicia Pearson has nothing on Melvin Williams, the guy who plays the Deacon in series 3 onwards, he was a real Baltimore kingpin during the 1970's and 80's. What's better is that Ed Burns, co-creator of The Wire was the cop who arrested him.

That's real Wire trivia :D

Just watched episode 11 of series 3 !

I've been watching an episode in bed every night. Last night's episode was awesome, couldn't believe the ending !!! -will not spoil !! - just like every episode I've watched so far this programme is awesome !!.

I take it that you mean the second-last episode? "Get on with it, people who have sex with their own mothers!" (to roughly translate).

Having now watched the whole lot, I think the only series I'd like to see again soon is the first. That was the purest of the five, and the one that had the best idea of what it was trying to do. The other series suffered because they expanded to other areas, but couldn't make up their mind where to put the focus. I each case I tended to want to see more of the other focus of the series (education, politics or whatever) much more, and the drugs gangs much less. The last series was just silly, and was well aware that it was - which doesn't excuse it.

And am I the only person who was expecting Carcetti (sp?) to turn out to be different to appearances? I kept on believing something would creep to the surface.

I'm glad that Carcetti didn't turn out like that. He was there to show how even the most powerful figure in Baltimore with the best intentions can't make a difference. They're bound by the promises and shortcomings of the previous administrations.

Season 5 did get a bit silly but I still loved it. I love Clay Davis' catch phrase. It just kept getting longer and longer. Brilliant.
