The Wire appreciation thread

I'm trying to get into this series. Watched about 4 episodes and it just hasn't done it for me yet... I'll give it one or two more...

It took me several before I really started to appreciate it. Stick with it and hopefully it will pay off.

I gotta say I am really surprised this thread isnt bigger! The wire was an amazing show!
I never thought to search for it here :P or i just forgot ...

bump for what im pretty sure is the greatest 60 hours anyone could ever spend

it just got better and better and better and now ive reached the end i honestly dont know what to do. i now feel empty inside knowing that there will be no more.

cant recommend this more highly to anyone! gotta be watched from the start i feel though which is a shame since series 3 starts on bbc soon

The wire will now be the yard stick by which you will judge most dramas. I really can't watch cop shows, as they seem to have really simplistic moral story lines and/or with ridiculous plots.

I've nuked it off my Sky box... Had the entire first series on there, and found the first 4 or so episodes quite slow generally.

I've left just two episodes (eg: 5 & 6). I'll watch those, but if that doesn't do it for me... Sorry...

Comparing it to something like Dexter (or even True Blood) those managed to interest me within just a couple of episodes, but I've found The Wire hard work TBH. I've even started watching Chuck, which although daft and stupid, generally puts a smile on my face...

This is so true. My wife and I were both hopelessly addicted to this programme. Two or three episodes a night every night, and it went by depressingly quickly.

We watched the last episode about November last year, and we've been trying to fill the void it's left since then. No TV show ever gripped us both like The Wire, and none probably ever will again.

We've seen some good stuff since (Generation Kill, Rome, Deadwood, Mad Men). They've engaged us and we've enjoyed them, but there is always that (usually unspoken) spectre lurking in the background: 'it's no The Wire, is it?'

Have now started watching The Corner to try to get back into the world of The Wire. It's very good - you can really see the seeds of The Wire taking fruit, although only from the drug dealers and addicts side of the story. It's nowhere near as polished, complete, well-rounded or plain wonderful as The Wire, but it's good storytelling.

Might try Homicide: Life on the Streets next. The search goes on, the void is still there...

Only just got to the end of Season 3 - I had a big break for a few months where I didn't really have time to watch any, so I've still got 2 seasons to enjoy. :D:D

Sure, rub it in, why don't you! </jealous>

Remember, though - you'll reach the end too. Those two long series stretching ahead of you will be over sooner than you think. And then you'll know our pain.

The Wire is definitely hard work, because it doesn't have the mission of the day, each episode doesn't really have a beginning and an end, there are no cliffhangers, no surprise twists, no polar bears, no hot babes, no standout hero. Its just about people living in a screwed up city.

Stick with it. It took me a while to get used to its slow style, and be patient and really get to know the characters rather than expecting a huge leap forward in the story or a massive reveal, there aren't any, and you will slowly start to appreciate what an awesome show it is.

Look out for the series ''homicide, life on the streets'' It's an early work, but is almost as absorbing with some great characters.
Or you could check out the novels or George Pelecanos

Well, I've got so much I'd like to watch, and not enough time to do so. But I'll definately give it 2-3 more episodes... I guess not every show is for every one :)

I'll worry about that when I get there. I'm going to watch 1 a week, or maybe half an episode a month? Then I'll be good for a couple of years! :D

The corner is a great show, unfortunately the book it is based on is unavaliable in korea :( Homicide is ok, but the show if anything is too episodic for my taste, which as mentioned the wire got away from brilliantly.

I'm one episode away from finishing Season 1. What a TV show this is, the story and characters are nothing I've seen before. I have put a request into my cousin who has the rest of the seasons on Box Set.

Favourite Character, it's so hard to pick
