The Witcher 2 - Thread

Don't get your hopes up with the length of the game. Our local Finnish gaming magazine called Pelit had their review up last week (93/100, generally very positive review, combat is much improved, it reeks of atmosphere but the game felt rather linear and the main character gets ridiculously powerful towards the end, making the game easy even) and it took 24 hours for the main plot + some of the side quests, though he admitted to skipping side quests whenever possible. The reviewer was also the first journalist in the world to complete the game :)

Sounds all good to me, i was just making a point anyway, i'm not saying it has to be epically long just as long as it isn't 8 hours etc like a lot of games are now - people said DA2 wasn't long but i've not finished it yet (last section) and last time i looked sure i'd sunk 80+ hours into - that is what i call an RPG

I know it is his job to finish the game as quickly as possible but anyone other gamer should be be playing RPGs this way. Defeats the purpose really :S

I would say that this specific magazine actually doesn't actually do that - rush through games just to get through them. It's the most respected gaming magazine in the country and generally speaking they have very high integrity. For example reviewing a game during a weekend spent with the developers is usually a no-go, unless the conditions are such that the hype doesn't factor into the review ie. isolated hotel room. They refuse front cover deals and deals that ask specific number of pages for a preview/review. It's not the biggest magazine in the country but they have their loyal fanbase (including me). It's also the one magazine that reviews even the never heard Russian games which has lead into things like Silent Storm being voted game of the year in Finland.

Then again, one of the other reviewers spent 90, yes 90 hours in Dragon Age 2. So who knows.

It is strange then that they would breeze through the game without doing any sidequests, if they are so good. They should have taken their time and review the game properly.

I expect to play for some 50 hours, taking my time, doing all quests I find, exploring everything.

Well he admitted to skipping side quests which can be a huge chunk of a game. I would hate to think of the Fallout 3 review if a the reviewer simply skipped all side quests...

Yeah i'll admit it is a little odd but i do think it is important to some people, they like to see they are getting a good deal but i do wonder how they measure do they just ask someone to play it and tell them how long it took them ?

some pics below as well..

Hey Peeps,

Just got me a credit card :) Have been waiting on the Witcher 2 for ages. I will definatly be purchasing this game. One of the few developers I think actully deserve money. Not that I would ever pirate a game.

I would like to know where would be the best place to purchase it from. I see steam has it for 30.00 and game ect have it 25.00. If i order the boxed game premium edition will it fit through my letter box as I will be at work. I take it with the steam copy they don't send you out the map ect. ?

GOG Digital Premium Addition!!!

Support the developer as they get all the money from the sale, Plus you get some nice extras and a choice of a free game. Win Win. :D

I wish that you could have bought the CE from them directly and i don't like the fact they aren't getting all the money...

I'm kinda wanting the physical disks rather than having to do a massive download, that and I would like to have a map that I can put on the desk ect. What do you think the shops will be selling it for in town, about 40.00 i'm thinking. Not sure what to do.

Well if you want the physical copy (which i wanted as well, the CE in particular) online will be the cheapest but i doubt you'd get it for tomorrow now but if that doesn't matter order away otherwise shops are the way to go but like you said you could be looking at £40 in a place like GAME, supermarkets such as Tesco would be cheaper i reckon, think someone in this thread bought a copy from Tesco...

Just got it from GOG there. I'll forfit the physical copies as long as the developers get the money. I must say I am very pleased with the gog servers, much much better than steam. 26Mins for the whole game. Steam goes up and down faster than a ***** knickers ;) It's nice to see they put up decent servers.

But I hate buying online games with other services apart from steam.

oh and TW2 is only 9gb? I read it was like 14gb. Well thats not too bad. Should take max 5 hours to download. :/

It is a bit of a pain having games across two different digital distributors but I've only really got about 12 or so games with gog.com so it's not a major issue.

I believe, once installed, it'll take up about 14GB though I could be wrong.

True about Steam for all it's worth and how people rave over it can't say i've ready had a good experience with it, and people said the mac client was awful, it's just the same as the windows one...

EDIT: i think the main install is 8Gb with another 8Gb of bonus content but that could just be for physical copies - seems like the download is around 9Gb...

Don't know how true it is but according to the GoG forums and TheWitcher.com's FAQ the release times are as follows:

- at 00:01 on the night of May 15-16 for the Polish Collector's Edition
- at 00:01 UTC on May 17 for the Premium Edition
- at 09:01 UTC on May 17 for the digital editions

Sauce Linky

Edit: I'd say it's spot on info due to it being in the FAQ but I've seen stranger things happen. Polish CE has already been unlocked and this is confirmed on the GoG forums.
