The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

CDP once again showing everyone else in the industry how to do things. 30+ hours of highest quality entertainment (we know it will be 40 hours or more if one does sidequests, and we know the level of quality we can expect), for 15 bucks, while including all of this:

The Numbers:
• 30+ hour adventure.
• Over 90 new quests.
• Over 40 new points of interest.
• Dynamic points of interest system. Killing bandits in their main hideout will affect the number of enemies in surrounding camps.
• 14000 lines of dialogue (Hearts of Stone had 6000).
• 100 individual pieces of armour (including new Witcher sets).
• More than 20 new monsters.
• New Game + maximum level increased to 100.

Armour and Weapons:
• New Witcher armour class ‘Grandmaster’.
• New armour merchant who is the only one able to craft this level of Witcher gear.
• Can get blue, hooded armour from Witcher 2, armour from Witcher 1, Ursine Witcher armour with furry pauldron that was in the artbook but cut from the main game.
• More than 30 new weapons.
• Can now dye armour. Dyes can be bought from a merchant, crafted or looted. Only obtainable in Toussaint. Pink is among the colours.
• You can acquire the golden, plumed armour of the Touissant knights, and the same goes for Roach!

New Mutation System:
• Mutations. 12 new abilities. Mechanic is unlocked through a quest started by a letter from Yennefer. Examples: Signs can have critical hits causing the enemy to explode, instead of dying Geralt is healed and has damage immunity, opponents knocked down by AARD freeze and die instantly. Can only utilise one at a time.
• The UI resembles Witcher 2’s character customization screen. Basically they’re super strong abilities/stat boosts that require mutagens and skill points to unlock. Can only pick one at a time but you have to unlock earlier ones to get the others.
• Despite unlocking it at level 34+ (recommended level to venture to Touissant) the system and anything you’ve unlocked carries over to New Game+ so you won’t have to unlock it again.

UI Changes:
• Greatly redesigned User Interface.
• Can now rotate Geralt in stats screen.
• Books moved to glossary.
• Upon looting a readable item a little notification pops up in bottom left of screen. Upon clicking in the right stick (on Xbox One controller), you can read the text of recently looted books, letters, notes etc without having to go to the menu, inventory, finding the right book and so on.
• Option to remove fish-eye effect from witcher sense.

Home Base:
• Geralt gets his own mother****ing vineyard.
• It’s called Corvo Bianco.
• You can renovate it with large sums of money, the option I saw was for 5000 Orens.
• You can add a greenhouse of sorts where you can grow herbs for all your witcher potion needs, an armourer’s table, a stable for Roach (with its own stat bonuses), upgrade your bed, renovated interior and exterior, secret lab, guest room.
• Guest room where old friends will come to stay. They said the names Triss and Yennefer, but were reluctant to reveal the names of anyone else who might visit. Surprise Iorveth/Saskia visit??
• Scaffolding and workers will appear after you choose to build something. Each change takes a certain amount of in-game time to complete, but you can just meditate til everything’s done.
• Can display your armour, weapons, paintings and books.
• Some paintings can be bought, or specially made, others are obtained through quests.

Music:
• Over 2 hours of new musical content in the game.
• The title screen song is a reworked version of the Bruxa song from the CGI trailer.

Other Tidbits:
• Can enter Geralt in a tournament, creating his own logo and team colours.
• Can enter under a fake name, although you may not fool everyone.
• You can of course race horses, but other events involve crossbow shooting and a grand melee. Seems like there will be more but they didn’t want to say.
• No new unique weather effects, but the lighting has been prepared specially to reflect the feeling of Southern Europe.
• No new hairstyles.
• As of the preview event (3/5/16) they were still working on the final boss fight.
• Grass has been optimised, more of it but less expensive.
• Improvements to cloth tech (see interview for more detail).
• New sword sheathing option. With this new option Geralt no longer automatically unsheathes his sword at the start of combat. Also, he no longer switches weapons to match the opponent. The player has to do it on their own.
• CDPR staff were given a sheet that says “We do not talk about Cyberpunk” for this press tour.
• Bioware staff apparently cheered when Witcher 3 was delayed out of 2014.
• Nilfgaard and Northern Kingdoms physical Gwents cards exist, unsure if they’re being packaged with this expansion.
• Release date “first half of 2016”.

I like that this company I have been a fan of since 2002 is only improving further, never letting me down.

Presumably it it not necessary for 'Hearts of Stone' expansion pack to be installed first, before playing this latest one?

If not, is there any advantage in doing so?... other than being able to enjoy additional 'game time'of course! :)

It is not necessary, but Hearts of Stone is unmissable, one of the best stories you can experience in a game.

OK, so my problem now though, is where can I buy this from, as I already have the main game on DVD, which with the help of my new 'superfast' broadband, can now be 'updated' much quicker than before!

EDIT: A quick bit of Googling has shown me that I can buy and download an on-line game code from Amazon for just under £7.

I don't think I have a GOG (whatever that is!) account yet but as I will be playing it on a GeForce card I assume that I can easily get one?

GOG is a store operated by CD Projekt, company that is making Witcher games. It is also pretty much the best game shop that exists (DRM-free games, bonuses, good prices etc). If you buy the expansions there they are compatible with your retail version (because the retail version comes with GOG code).

You know, I held out for a long time before buying into this, knowing that it could be a game that would suck away my free time.

I lasted 84 minutes before I got it refunded. Sure it looked pretty, but the controls felt awful to me, and it just didn't grab me in the same way that other games have in the past. Maybe I'm just getting old, or something else, I dunno.

Shame really.

The controls are pretty much the same as in any other third person game. Maybe you found Geralt a bit unresponsive ? Go to options menu and select alternative movement response, it removes all movement intertia.
Congrats on missing one of the best games of all time I guess.

A few snaps to whet the appetite

I am so god damn excited to replay this whole thing. First I will revisit these wonderful places:

..then get entangled with Gaunter O' Dimm, and then finally visit Toussaint.
I think I will re-read the last book of the saga too, since part of it takes place there.

Has the combat been patched in this yet ?

Don't think I've ever been so let down by a game as this on release, have they removed the 'spam one button attack mash' or is it still the same ?

It has never been one button attack mash kind of combat on harder difficulties.

Its the best Game of thrones game we will ever get :D

As much as I love Game of Thrones, it wishes it was half as cool as Witcher :)

That said, I did play and finished! the actual Game of Thrones RPG game by Cyanide - and it is GREAT!

It has terrible low budget production values and poor combat (people who complain about witcher combat are stupids, they should play GoT to see what bad combat is). But it has amazing writing, so much so that it elevated the game for me hugely and I completely loved it by the end. Anyone who likes GoT should play it (and grow some patience because the game starts in a boring way, admittedly). But once it gets going...awesome.

quick question - Content wise - is witcher 3 as good as skyrim or better? ( skyrim fan )

Skyrim is great, spent 180 hours in it.

Witcher 3 is a masterpiece on much higher level though. But you must accept that it is a character driven game in which you are playing an established character and not empty blank slate.

I put about the same hours into Skyrim too but I just can't go back to it now. It just doesn't feel as "solid" as TW3, if that makes sense.

Oddly, I can still play Morrowind with the overhaul quite happily.

Oh it makes perfect sense, I never went back either. Skyrim was fun, but it was a low-effort kinda trashy fun - most sidequests were generic, most dungeons were copy paste, there were not many memorable characters or storylines there..nothing to make me go back. Witcher series is different in this regard, as are the classics like Torment, Bloodlines, New Vegas etc.

I didn't like Witcher 1 because I could rob people with impunity.

I didn't like Witcher 2 because meh, I don't know, too much dialog.

Will I like this? I want to. I like ElderScrolls even if Skyrim was a bit meh compared to it's predecessors.

Do you like well written movies and TV Shows or do you skip them because they have too much dialogue ?

Would it not be easier just to hold down 'x' and jump to when you get to speak, rather than repeatedly mash the same button for 2 minutes?

Seems like an oversight on their part. I would have thought they would have patched this in by now.

Or maybe, they made the game for people who enjoy dialogue and story.

After having this since purchasing my 970 and putting off over and over, gonna give this a good go over the weekend.

Looking forward to it :)

Bit of advice:

- set shadows on medium and foliage distance high, hairworks off, rest ultra/1080p - will give you 60fps no matter what

- in options set alternative movement response to enabled

- tailor the HUD as you need

- set proper difficulty (I recommend Blood and Broken Bones for first playthrough, if you want a bit of challenge)

- once you get out of White Orchard, disable point of view markers in HUD options, exploration is lot more enjoyable that way

- use all the tools at Geralt's disposal - signs, bombs, alchemy, skills etc

- ask if you need any advice

- enjoy the best game ever made

Finally purchased Witcher 3 ready for when I completed #2, Half way through Chapter 2 so possibly another 15hours and ill be launching #3 can't wait :)

Make sure to check my post above yours.

Also, I hope you went with Iorveth :)

And spare Letho when you can, if you can. Then import the save into Witcher 3.
