The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

the games dont exactly follow the books to a T, they are their own entity and people will, generally, play them as such. And as such people can only judge characters based on what they see in the games. It's all a bit needless pointing out things in the books when the games are only an adaption of the original stories.

It is kinda irrelevant what Sapkowski things about games - what matters is that CDP writes games as book sequels (especially TW3) and it follows directly from them, so to discount it completely would be strange.
Also, that eurogamer interview was 4 years ago. Since then, Sapkowski wrote a new book (Season of Storms) which is completely compatible with games, story-wise, and TW3 netted him millions of new book sales. I would not be surprised if he changed his mind on this.

I think its fantastic that a game can have such great characters that it does cause people to think like this, few games do. Its generally fine for people to analyse characters in a film or book, why not a game.

Indeed, especially when it is actually better written than most games or movies for that matter.

I am not a big RPG fan but because I have no games to play at the moment I am thinking of buying this. Back when it was released I was watching some streams and it seemed like there where way too many cut scenes and I found it a bit boring.

So, should I get it? If I do decide to buy this, should I get the DLC's too? And lastly, I am not familiar with mods etc, should I bother? Are they any good?

Look, this is not some hardcore turnbased RPG that would turn you off. This is third person immersive RPG with plenty of action and exploration. If you enjoy games like Last of Us or Read Dead Redemption, then you will enjoy Witcher 3. And because Witcher 3 is actually better than even those games, I am fairly sure you will enjoy it. As long as you have decent attention span.

You will get 16 smaller DLCs for free, then there are two expansions, one is released (Hearts of Stone) and it is brilliant. Better than most full AAA games.

Bethesda do great expansions, though.

Eh, it's hit and miss. Shivering Isles was their best expansion work to date, followed by Point Lookout. The rest of their DLCs were mostly meh or terrible (Zeta/Anchorage, ugh).
None of their DLC/expansions are as good as Hearts of Stone though. And I suspect Blood and Wine will up the ante even further.

Witcher 3 now won both Golden Joysticks (voted by millions of gamers) and The Game Awards (voted by gaming critics) GOTY awards.

Congratulations CDP, very much deserved.

I am 105 hours into FO4 and it is dreadful when it comes to writing and quest design. Just dreadful. Not just a huge step down from Witcher 3 (it is in another stratosphere, frankly), but also from New Vegas and even Fallout 3. Bethesda just focused on completely wrong things.

Try telling the fan boys that. They are seriously easy to please. :p

I am a Fallout fanboy too :)
Fallout 2 was my favourite game of all time for 17 years, until Witcher 3.
Unfortunately Bethesda does not have very good writers and designers. They have great worldbuilders though. I still enjoy FO4, but the missed potential is a shame.

This is a great game but there are some really irritating things about it, the unskippable animated cutscenes when loading for one. I've watched the Uma one about 25 times now, why not just let me skip it :(

They can be skipped once the game is loaded in the background.
Plus there is a mod on nexus that disables the animated recaps completely.

Installed this last night and played a couple of hours. Very impressed with the world and its detail and the gritty portrayal of life it produces. I like the lore of The Witcher too and as expected the characters and quests are really well fleshed-out.

There are some things stopping me getting quite a immersed as I might, though. First is the clunky feel of movement and combat. Every time Geralt starts off moving or changes dirsction it feels juddery in a way I'm not used to having become accustomed to g-sync. I'm not 100% convinced g-sync is actually working. Also I've lost count of the number of times I've ended up running him into walls, fences, doorways, etc. It quite breaks the immersion when my grizzled witcher seems unable to navigate a simple wooden walkway...

I'm finding the combat a bit cumbersome too. Having come straight from Shadows of Mordor, it feels very slow and clumsy controlling Geralt in fights. Also I suck at it, it seems :(

Despite the issues, the world, the lore and the detail will keep pulling me back in, I'm sure.
Go into options menu and enable "alternative movement response".

Go into options menu and set foliage distance to high, hairworks off, shadows medium. Leave rest to ultra. Framerate limit 60. Fullscreen on.

That should ensure you get 60fps (assuming you have at least 970). All your issues should be solved.

So, this is how my quick jump on Witcher went last night... Oh god I love this game lol.

*note, no main story spoilers here*
I decided to do some contracts as I'm pushing through the levels and don't want to rush through the story.

So, let's crack on, cool, I have one, some owner of a tavern has an issue, something to do with the lighthouse in Skellige. Walk into his tavern, wtf.jpg, get sass'd by 2 gobby little *****. Whatever, fluff them off and talk to the owner. Settle a price, standard job, seems like a nice chap so don't try to rip him off. I also ask who the 2 yobs were, tells me they are sons of a father who also dislikes strangers and works above the law.

Go and do the job at the lighthouse, some absolute muppet had decided to take a bribery to extinguish the lighthouse flame at midnight to cause a trade ship to crash. He was promised spoils blah blah. pleb.mpeg. This wraith is now tied to him for his bad deeds... Oh you gon' fudged up son.

I kill this Penitent wraith. Who is a bit of a badass, looking all sharp and putting up a decent fight. The pleb returns, swears on his mam he won't do it again. IDGAF.avi, you gon fudged up. Leave now.

I head back to the tavern, time for my money yo! Speak to the tavern owner, get my loots. All round nice guy, even offers me some mead! Suddenly, the yobs return. Urgh, mouthing me off until the cows come home. My new found friend, the tavern owner steps in, I tell him not to worry about it. It doesn't matter.

The yobs start a fight, and kill my bro with a lucky shot whilst I was knocked back. ohnoyoudidn't.gif, I whip these boys into several shades of rekt.

Urgh, walk out, whole village including their dad on my case, calling me a murdered etc. Whatever, your sons were a holes. I'm arrested.

In jail, nice, bustin' me some rocks. Guard comes over, ahhhh yisssss, use my buffed up jedi power on him. Freeeeee. Go see the Jarl, oh, this guy. Spoke to him before when I was with Yen at a wake. Bit of a loud one, we had a fist fight. Mad respects earnt. He will help me out.

Tells me I have to pay the a hole father a tonne of silver. Ye son, don't have that gold. The Jarl pays him off for me... Huh, what ya cooking fam? What you need from me?

His son is in danger, wants me to help, blah blah blah. What ever, just unshackle me whore.

Meet up with his son, just like his dad, loud and rude. We head into this earth vagina to face our fears... Pretty boring, kill a few ghouls. Suddenly the kid wants to get mad high! My kind of kid. We all have mad dreams, facing their fears.

Ohshoot.mp4, it's my turn... It's the king of the Wild Hunt... Yo, Geralt, why so scared? We destroy the king with no sweat, but then he speaks of Ciri, she is what I fear, her life, I fear her life to be taken.

We leave the cave, the Jarls son thanks me and gives me mad respect just like his dad. Hecool.xvid. I go on my way.

Fin.

That was one evenings play... SO ****** GOOD!

TL : DR, cool story bro.

That was fantastic.

And WTF? I played for 240 hours and do not remember this. Must have missed it or do it differently or something.

Witcher 3(and 2 and 1) all have fairly pants combat.

Wrong.

Details on the expansion look great, and I'm sure it will be well made. I'm struggling to muster the enthusiasm to play the game again though tbh.

I've got a replay abandoned about 25 hours in and don't see myself going back to it really. There aren't enough facets to the game to hold interest for that long for me.

Why would you need to replay it to play the expansions? There is no need.

I suffer from the opposite problem. Ever since I finished my first 200+ hour playthrough in June, all I wanted to play was more Witcher 3, but I have been postponing the replay until Blood and Wine comes out because I want it to be as fresh as possible. Hopefully I will manage to forget a lot by then. But I can't wait to go back, Hearts of Stone was already brilliant.

Firestream is great for certain situations, especially for fire susceptible enemies, but yeah the first igni is more versatile. I love yrden II and quen II.

I've just completed the main quest after about 130 hours!!!

As for the ending... I had a major tantrum.
I was absolutely raging when Ciri didn't reappear from the Frost portal. Actually, I quit the game after telling Emhyr she was dead and had to cool down for a few hours.

Loaded back up again to continue and thought oh well, may as well see it through. Got to the Tavern and thought Triss was the shady looking character in the corner... Ah well, at least my Geralt romanced her and won't be foreveralone.jpg.

SURPRISE!

THANK GOD FOR THAT!!!!!

CD Projekt Red are absolute sods for doing that to me!!!

I was quite happy with the ending and thought it was fitting. I wish it cleared up what happened to Dandelion, Yen and co. though.

Also actually feel quite bad for romancing Triss instead of Yennefer now. Why did they have to make her come across as such a female dog early on? :(

Wish I'd read the books first to be honest, would have probably changed a few major choices for me.

Regarding Yen, Dandelion and Zoltan, they are present in the inn...in the second good (a little bittersweet) ending. That one is my favourite ending, glad I got it the first time.

Just finished the main story. Apart from a slight disappointment with how under-powered the final bosses felt, it's left me still hankering for more even after 110 hours of play-time. Best story-driver RPG I can remember for many a year. Really brought Geralt's story and character alive and made you feel part of it. Great stuff. Gonna miss it.

Get Hearts of Stone, it is one of the best expansions ever made. After that you can join us in waiting for Blood and Wine.

ok im pretty bored of fallout 4 now and this is next on the list. Where is the cheapest place these days? Steam have it for £25 which doesnt seem too bad but the scrooge in me would like it under 20

Currently cheapest here

But I would get the steam version if I were you. The game offers 150-200 hours of highest quality entertainment, makes Fallout 4 look very poor in comparison.

I swear somebody in here mentioned a mod to auto win at Gwent but I can't find it anywhere.

It's for my girlfriend, despite trying to teach her she doesn't get it, but for some reason wants to complete all quests. Women right?

Gwent is really not that hard..just let her play few games and she will get the rules..
CDP made even a tutorial video she can watch:

You know that it's possible to like a game without bashing another right?

Both games are excellent imho.

Obviously, I disagree that Fallout 4 is excellent or in any way as good as Witcher 3. While it is possible to like and praise one game without bashing another, in this case, the person I was replying talked about Fallout boring him. I offered my opinion, since I played both games extensively (140 hours in F4 doing all the quests I found and finishing it, and 240 hours in Witcher 3, doing the same).

It is not a coincidence that Fallout 4 is the lowest rated Bethesda game since 2002 and doesn't win any notable GOTY awards. It took everything excellent about New Vegas (roleplay, choices and consequences, dialogue system, good writing..) and chucked it out the window in favour of "KILL LOOT RETURN" style fetch quests.

Now, this does not mean everyone must dislike it. I liked Fallout 4 too! Otherwise I would not have played it for 140 hours. But I only liked it for atmosphere and exploration. Everything else that was excellent about the franchise was missing or poor in this one.

Meanwhile, Witcher 3 took everything excellent about Witcher 2 and turned the notch up to eleven.

Everyone knows Yennefer is the best. Sapkowski, the original novel author knows it, Tomaszkiewicz, the Witcher 3 game director knows it, mrbios knows it, I know it.
