The world famous all-nighter thread. Please come on in...

I usually do all my work at night as it's more peaceful but I've had two weeks of 4 hours sleep, a lot (almost) of which has been on sofas (though it's been like that for 2 months now lol), on top of work and then coursework stuff.

And I went shopping with the missus today and was at the Opera last night. Thus I am knackered.

And probably in a wickedly unhealthy state :D

Jesus, can you not do an all nighter without all the caffeine? =/

Q F T.

One night is absolutely fine, your body is designed to cope with it, it has reserves if you like. I have experimented in the past with sleep deprivation and your body only has reserve enough for you to miss a single full nights sleep (provided you get a couple of hours instead of the full 8), and function reasonably unaffected the following day, once before having to really refuel. A second night of 1-2 hours and the following day will be a little surreal, can get a little dizzy, and anytime you stop you'll feel drowsy. A third night of similar sleep and your body gets really ******! :D

Tips for staying awake during the day: STAY COOL, if you stay wrapped up warm in a coat, your brain associates the warmth with bed, and your drowsiness as a sign that it's bedtime and will try it's hardest to switch off.

Drink plenty, not talking about red bull, just cold water. Apart from the cool water and action of drinking keeping you awake and occupied, a full bladder will keep you awake :p

NB: I've never taken caffine in my life, I prefer determination and just a natural energy to keep me going. I really don't find it hard to stay awake. Also, driving whilst tired is actually more hazardous than driving over the limit, yet there's no law against it.

4 hours is plenty for your body to hunker down into a survival state of power napping. Your body won't trigger until after the first few nights of only getting 4 hours, but once it does it strips down its sleep pattern to the core essentials to allow you to funtion to the best of it's ability.

I have survived on 2 hours a day for about 4 months, polyphasic is remarkable in that it works! lol. 30 mins every 6 hours for 4 months. I only stopped since it's socially unacceptable, and doesn't work well around employment, there's nowhere to put your head down for half an hour in a busy office.

Sleep is a very mysterious process, and there's lots of variation to what gives the body what it needs/wants best/fastest/most efficiently, and also to what the body can tollerate over what period. Hence I like pushing myself sometimes. Always nice to have a 14-hour catchup tho

The ol' 4 hour trick.

It's actually supposed to be more healthy doing things like that. But everyone likes a nice long sleep. One more Children of Bodom song and one more Dream Theater song and I'm off for tonight

Your body works on 4 hour cycles, so if you have to forgo the 8 hours go for 4 and trick your body into thinking it's had a decent nights sleep. It works for a good part of the day

Actually, an 8 hour sleep is divided unequally through 4 phases. You're correct in the last phase (REM) lasts for 4 hours, but the first 3 phases are considerably shorter, the first phase lasting just 30 mins. I use this to my advantage if I didn't get enough sleep the previous night, later in the day after work say, I will deliberately nod off, knowing full well I will wake 30 minutes later feeling refreshed. Inbetween these phases you come very close to consciousness, so I wake easily after the first phase. Equally, if you get woken unnaturally in the middle of a phase, your body is completely interupted and you will feel shattered the entire day.

If you want to wake earlier than a full night sleep, plan your alarm to wake you at the end of a phase, or as close to the start/end of a phase, it's the near-middle of a phase that's catastrophic to your sleep (just trust me on that, you don't even want to try it, it's worse than not sleeping at all).

Average phases (vary between people):
30 mins, 1 hour, 2.5 hours, 4 hours.

That only works if you're one of those people that can just fall straight asleep. :(

Those of us that take 2 hours or so are stuffed. :P

Doing an all-nighter atm, partly because I woke up at 5:50pm today (Don;t ask me how this happened, even I don't know), and partly because I have a 1000 word report to be done before Monday 9am.

Relentless and Soundgarden are keeping me awake :D
