The world famous all-nighter thread. Please come on in...

I'm about to finish my final year dissertation... 10,000 words + screenshots over 105 pages - excluding code + configuration files.. due date is Friday.

It feels GOOD to be almost done; I've put so much effort into it... many all-nighters like this.:D:rolleyes:

Quick question to like-minded university types....

My proposal for my dissertation is to include a literature review.

I've found though, that all of my literature has addressed my problem question, and none of it has given a mixed view.

My question is on how reliable forensic fibre evidence is, and all of the reviews have confirmed that it is reliable.

I've noticed something though, all of these tests concentrate on different types of clothing and how they are all distinguishable from each others fibres.

I'm interested to know how the fibres compare from 3 of the same t-shirt from H&M or topman, after separate washes / diff types of detergent and conditioner.

Would I be able to pose a sort of problem question after my lit review?

oh i hate lecturers, just come to get tutorial sheet from intranet site and the git hasn't put it up :/

I'm ****ed

Yes, theres no reason why you cant do a literature review and then say "but, i feel this needs to be done" etc etc. There no reason why you cant investigate what you think is a problem area too.

^ I don't see why not, but then again you're asking sleep deprived bleary eyed students :p

Update on my work, finished my biochemistry practical writeup and not got too much to do of my histology and pathology practical ECG write up. Feeling pretty good, had the choooooons blaring through my headphones and I've had had friends to chat to online via steam etc... :p

Had to print 2 copies of mine. 130 pages each, and a CD version

3/4 of an ink cartridge and over half a reem of paper!

Right then I'm going for an extra hour or 2 of kip since i can't actually do any of the hard work.

That tutor is going to kill me though, and I mean literally he has lots of pent up rage and last time he told me in a threatening manner (least what i could understand, damn accent) That i had "better do the damn work next time".

I'm getting thrown down that rather modern internal atrium from is 4th floor office :(

Thanks for that. I was just worried that now my dissertation subject has already been answered by my lit review that I'd probably need to adjust my topic to something more specific.

Going from the current one:

A study into how reliable the forensic analysis and comparison of fibre evidence can be when used in criminal convictions.

To maybe something like:

A study into the distinguishability of fibres obtained from mass produced items of clothing subjected to individual conditions, when analysed using forensic techniques.

As long as you document changes to your subject then its fine. My final dissertaton was nothing like what I set out to do last year. It was documented through a progress report and refelctive evaluation detailing it. I didnt have a lit review, but I suppose you can put in that the change in your direction.

Dont be afraid to take on something new. Its actually quite common for final year students to produce stuff of publication quality. If you pose a very real and unanswered question and discuss it in an interesting way the examiners will be far more impressed than a perfectly written but age old argument they have read 5000 times before.

Am i right in thinking this is looking at say samples from a murder suspect shirt, and seeing if this could narrow it down to him, or just everyone who bought a shirt from that mass produced batch? If so it would make a very interesting read. Im no forensic expert, but i am a CSI buff and its the science i find interesting. I wish you well.

Cheers for that, I think I'll be suggesting that I may change the title in this proposal. It should make it a bit easier / more interesting investigating something new. It's a bit boring seeing every paper confirm the answer to my question.

Take it from me, an interesting yet difficult project will be a lot more enjoyable than an easy or straightforward one.

Yeah, I'm thinking of studying the same item of clothing e.g. a brown t-shirt. There may have been 500 to each batch made. It's likely that each batch will be slightly different from each other, but I'm interested in looking at items from the same batch.

I'll then look at whether or not there is any significant difference between 10 of the same t-shirt, all washed a varying amount of times, at a varying temperature, with a varying conditioner/detergent. I may even give the 10 t-shirts to friends to wear for a time period, and let them decide how many times to wash them.

I'll then gather back in the items of clothing, making sure not to contaminate them with each other.

Then I'll look at carrying out various types of analysis to see whether they are distinguishable from each other or not.

Well Good Morning all. How are we?, tired? :D

I should have stayed up the whole night tbh. Went to bed at 3am and only got two hours sleep before the cat woke me up and that was it, I couldn't nod back off. My fault for going to bed at 6am for the past 2 weeks.

Don't feel too bad but I guess come tonight I will be shattered.

I managed to stay awake, but i didn't finish as much as i wanted! Last night i had 4 assignments in for today, now i've got 1 and a half. Not bad i guess :(
