Yep those screenshots were taken at brightness three notches down from default. For some reason the game has default brightness such that shadows are a really light grey and it feels like your're walking around at sunset rather than at night.

I don't think they can do anything, or have done anything to people doing this. I am also interested in unlocking it early if it's possible (if anyone can share an easy method I'm all ears!).
If this is indeed risky then I probably wouldn't bother.

Gave it a quick blast last night 20 mins or so, seems ok, graphics on par with far cry 3 (ish).

SweetFX is a little app that you place into the .exe directory of a game and it'll add special shaders and colour filters to really bring out the colours and shadows in the game.
Makes a MASSIVE difference for some games.

Was reading last week or so that apparently it's in the Steam ToS that you can't use a VPN to bypass region restrictions, although afaik they probably don't ban just for that, it's probably mainly for buying from other regions cheaper that's clamped down on.
I know I did this myself for Deus Ex: HR when it came out and nothing came of it, but I don't think I'd risk it again.
As for Metacritic giving the game a hard time, I would literally rather trust the opinion of a hobo on the street who doesn't even own the game over the people who generally post on that place, so I'll wait till the 28th and judge it for myself. It might be that they're right, but since watching TB's video I've become quietly optimistic that it at the very least isn't terrible, although I'm not expecting miracles.

I attempted to yesterday but the 64 bit sweetfx I used for BF4 wasn't working with it. Instant Crash to desktop.

yes probs.
Using one of my 290x's in single mode it achieves 68.6 average on max settings on the benchmark. I very much doubt it, I'm assuming you haven't actually played the game.
