Thinking of getting a cat, some advice?

How old are you if you don't mind me asking?

Old enough for a garden with flowers and veg, and a greenhouse.

All of which any and all local cats try to use as a public toilet.

The worst problem being, people let their cats out all night, and i can't stay up all night and shoot them

I hate cats. End of , good night.( cats think anyones garden but their own is a public toilet).
And anyone who says their cat don't do this is a liar, ( unless they have a litter tray in their house 24/7.

Where do you get your info from?

There is no such thing as an indoor cat unless you chain it to the walls.

The idea that a cat, or ANY animal is an indoor animal is just garbage.

I can't believe there are fools who really believe this.

I get my info from personal experience, something you lack.

There is a thing as an indoor cat - a cat that doesnt leave the house. Have you honestly never seen someone who owns a flat to have a cat? My cousin has an indoor only cat because she lives on the 5th floor in a flat. The cat doesnt leave the house, so therefore is an INDOOR CAT.

Its not a difficult concept.

Anyway if you hate cats then **** off out this thread.

We have 2 house kitties.

We got our Persian first from our local rescue and he's a big sop. We got him a friend as we were out most of the day.
The kitten seemed to liven him up a lot and he does seem a lot happier.

I'd urge you to get a cat or two from the local rescue. There's so, so many needing homes. Even if you want a particular breed there are breed specific rescues.

No matter what route you get one from you should get them neutered. Although, if you go through a rescue and they're old enough they should be neutered anyway.

I ended up swooping :) meet Poppy the Maine ****!

Here in Aus land having an indoor only cat is very common & having mainly outdoors is the exception. We have 2 Ragdolls & they are both indoor only cats, mainly due to the breed as there such docile creatures. I agree though if you only have 1 cat its only most of the day then it will get very bored.

Recently broke up with my GF and wanted something in this empty house, so thought of a cat.

I've read that keeping a cat as indoor only is better for it and they live longer, it would also be better because it would be cleaner. Do you think this is cruel though? Also, like most people, I work 5 days a week, so it will be at home alone from 9-6, is it fine to leave it with food/water and toys to play with, or is an indoor cat unsuitable for this? I don't want to be cruel to the thing.

having owned a mog on and off all my life and knowing people with indoor cats I can tell you its difficult to do. cleaning a ton of cat poop a day, the hair in the house, the cats miserable too.

My advice is get a cat if you live on a quiet road, ive lost too many cats under cars. Do let them out, (best to have a cat flap, v easy to fit and only a tenner from wilkinsons) You can give it all the toys in the world but it wont make up for what a cat is supposed to do... explore.

And lastly, please, think about actually getting a cat, so many people go for kittens, kittens are easy to home and cute, but eventually they become adult cats and its far more difficult to house a poor old mog that just wants abit of love and attention in its mid to later life than it is a cute fluffy kitten.

When you go to bum it, put it in a box and secure with cotton wool, or it'll scratch the hell out of you. Else they're good replacements for girlfreinds :D

Let it out, cats aren't supposed to be indoor animals, I hate indoor cats, they seem retarded or something, everything has the right to know theres a world out there. Else how are you any different to josef fritzl, you know, minus the incest rape and offspring etc.

Most people who buy pedigree cats, keep them indoors.

Those who feel indoor cats are wrong, here is a question: have you ever owned a pedigree cat and if so did you let it out?

For the record, I've never seen a pedigree cat roaming the streets. If I let my 2 cats out, they will be stolen in less than 3 days (more like 1 or 2 days).

Moggies can be left out to roam the streets, but pedigree cats are a completely different animal. When I was shopping around for my 2 cats, some breeders recommended strongly that I not allow them outside.

There are many cat owners on this forum. You will struggle to find a single one who owns a pedigree cat and lets them outside. I believe Makounouchi was the only person who let his cats roam the streets, but this was down to the fact that he lived in a very rural area. When he moved to Brighton, he decided to sell his cats, as he knew in Brighton, he wouldnt be allowed to let them out (due to theft).

you have a very valid point, if the cat say a russian blue, £500 a piece starting is spotted byt the wrong person... they will be in a sack within days.

just my two cents on indoor/outdoor

my tabby moggie will be outdoors whenever it is sunny, used to go out to hunt as well but doesn't seem bothered about that anymore (too old maybe), and will go off for a wander, never particularly far.

the tabby moggie I had before that one was killed on the main road :( we don't live on the main road but it must have gone quite far

did have some persians (dying of old age = best outcome possible = win) and they didn't go outside that much except to chase the sun, but even then they'd much prefer to find a patch of sun inside...

however we also have a burmilla who we got from people who had kept it as an indoor cat in flat all its life (up to about 7) - it took a while but now it will go outside to toilet, although we keep a litter tray out too, as if the weather is unpleasant it will often try and be cheeky and go somewhere in the house. when she is outside she seems quite nervous most of the time, and will only really go in the garden behind the house which is fairly enclosed, but in the summer she will relax a bit and chase butterflies (because she's far too pathetic to actually kill a small mammal). Generally I think she'd be pretty happy never going outside, even when she does go outside she'll rarely stay out for long.

It makes me feel a little better about her safety as she is a very pretty cat (pedigree but no papers). She also prefers upstairs to downstairs, probably because the clumsy oaf of a labrador lives downstairs and doesn't really consider the cats while moving.

Does anyone else have a burmilla because while she is lovely, she also drives me ****ing spare demanding a lap to sit on whenever I am sat down, by shark-circling round the chair and moaning until she decides to jump up...this sounds cute but when it is every single evening just after I've got in from work, it wears thin, and also there is no way (beyond actual cruelty) to get this cat to go away. I have never managed to get her to use her claws in anger, whereas my other cat will tear your hand apart if you don't know what she doesn't like.

In my opinion, you should let cats be cats and let them outside unless you have a very good reason to keep them indoors. If you've got a pedigree or live on a busy road, fair enough, it might be a good idea to make them house cats. If I lived in a flat I wouldn't really entertain the idea of getting a cat.

I have 3 of the little scamps and they are all let out. Sometimes they'll spend allll day sleeping and be out all night, other times it's the opposite, and sometimes they are in and out like yo-yos all day!

Oh the joys of being jumped on at 3am to be let out :D

My girlfriends friend has 2 cats, both of which indoor cats, mainly because they live in Tucson, AZ... Hot hot heat, and Coyotes at night. They're perfectly happy, and incredibly playful, because they don't have distractions\knowledge of the outdoors, so they tend to want your attention more.

I have 4 cats myself, all outdoor ones, they're a lot more independant, come and go as they please, want attention when they want it, as opposed to my friends, who constantly want affection.

One thing about having indoors cats, they don't like change that much, so if you move and take them with you, they'll oftern be very scared\inquizitive when they first move in because it's completely new surroundings.

We have three Siamese (picy below) that are house cats, for all the reasons previously mentioned.. If you are getting active breeds of cat make sure you give them plenty of things to do; toys, places to climb, etc.. Definitely get two cats if you plan to keep them indoors
