This Business and Moment...

Just been offered a promotion at my current organisation (which is great) but will have to manage someone who also interviewed for the job. I’ve managed people before, but never someone who potentially has a chip on their shoulder from day 1! Any tips?

I would try to have an open, honest 1-to-1 as early as possible and really focus on
listening to understand rather than listening to reply.

I'm going to assume that you got the job over them because you posses skills or behaviours that they do not, if so highlight how you will help them to develop so they can potentially make a step up in the future.

Generally I find most people are not annoyed about missing out on the promotion but rather that they feel its another sign that they are undervalued.

I have a new job!

Having been working with Salesforce related stuff for the last three years I decided recently to go for it and try and break into the ecosystem. My current employer have dragged their heels on renewing my travel assignment each year, and this year it was getting close to me being in a potential redundancy situation. So, while they stumbled their way through miles of internal red tape to try and get it resolved, I went out to market to see what was on offer, and landed a position at a Salesforce partnership company in the UK working as a Functional Consultant.

It will be a big leap and a huge learning curve but I can't wait to get started in the new year

I've been trying to find out if I have a job next year or not, and from what I have ascertained, I do... I think. The person who's taken over the sample domain space that I'm in is a really sound American guy and we get on well. He said if I don't want to be the technical resource like the French dude said, I don't have to. I was like yeaa, but contract renewal time...I'm just playing ball until it's all sorted! He laughed. So hopefully a bit less stress over christmas! I probably won't find out until the new year in writing lol which is stupid but standard. You come into work in Jan assuming the paperwork will be done at some point.

Anyway, I've been putting some internal irons in fires trying to craft a logistics team, which covers all logistics software. There is a woman who I work with who manages a couple of the tools now, I want to get mine under her area, but build it out as a logistics specific team and not just her and work on managing the space with her. Figured if I'm here I may as well make some impact. Been coasting since May, but still delivering. :D

That's boring work though. Outside of that we've been smashing stuff out. Our VolAir app is so very close... saying that, our main developer has gone AWOL just before finishing. Yay. :/ he's a great coder, really good, yet doesn't want to do it for a living and was fitting kitchens! Lost that job, was doing this on the side and has some serious mental health issues. We've had to talk him down a lot. Now he's gone AWOL, he told us he was leaving slack, not sure why, but said to email him and he was taking some space/ time. Management is fun sometimes :D

Latest demo is pretty sweet:

Goat Cash is mega fun... our game Goat Clash is very nearly released. Even have an OCUK dude at GOAT HQ!

Signed our partner agreement with our charity too, so as of next year will be giving away real goats :) woo!
Just need to get another exchange listing now, but I'm not paying the huge fees people are charging.

SaveNode is going... I've brought on one more person and hopefully a second soon. That'll be 3 developers and we need it. I'm in the process of building out an index fund, so a lot of relationship management and BS work tbh but needs to be done and seems to be my bag. Market has chucked our token price like mad, but hey, we're still here building but just have a **** budget of **** all to work with. I was trying to see how @Phate could do some work with us for savenode, but it's been a bit manic, so priorities changed. I haven't forgotten you dude :P

Now I need a coffee and to work out who I'm supposed to be emailing next :P

Wow sounds like a lot going on @randomshenans! Wish I could help you out somehow but my coding skills just aren't sufficient I'm afraid. Happy to give you some QA-ing if need be though?

I started my business in October and just finished selling off the last of our initial stock. To me it's a good step as it shows the product sells well. As far as I know there are other products that do the same thing, but none in the UK look like ours, which is a selling point I'll admit. Aesthetics were a high priority when designing the product. Just had our second stock land and this time it has our branding on it. Just the business website URL, as I'm still in talks with the manufacturer about getting our logo put on it instead, all cost dependant.

Did a collaboration with a twitter blogger and we got over 1000 followers in 1 week which was a decent start. In the new year there will be other products added that are wireless and hopefully will sell just as well for us. I know the new year will be quiet so using that time to move the website e-commerce platform and re-do the website while it's quiet. I don't need to draw a salary from the business as I work full time so I'm not concerned that sales might be slow after the festive period. Gives me time to do the website properly.

Anyone else got any news?

Promotion this week  Lead AI Programmer.

It's taken pretty much bang on 5 years to get back to a lead position after switching from finance industry to game dev. Been a lot of hard work, but worth it :)

Well done, I just lack motivation to work for anyone other than myself, hence me starting my own business up on the side of my day job.

Let you know tomorrow, as its in the morning. Starts off with an office tour by the two people who interviewed me over Skype a few weeks back.

Currently here in Stockholm, relaxing in a nice hotel, flown over here this afternoon and everything paid for them, so its looking positive so far :)

After not getting the Düsseldorf role's and the role in Luxembourg (technical interview over the phone went badily on Monday) I need this final interview to turn out well for me so I can move on with my career in IT.

Good luck! The Swedes are really nice to work with, I'm on a co-dev with a Swedish studio so I'm over there a lot.

Thanks, I'm still waiting for the phone call to say if I got the job or not. I really do hope I get it.

I am on holiday at Tenerife at the moment. Been here since yesterday, been contacted today for Skype interviews next for two different roles in Germany. One on Monday and the other on Wednesday. I just hope this hotel wifi can handle the video calls without any issues!

Subbytech.com - We sell power bank chargers for gadgets (mobiles, kindles, vapes, torches, games console controllers, MP3 players, tablets, etc) Just had samples land yesterday of wireless chargers. Going to test them over Christmas myself so I know how the end user will use them, before picking a manufacturer to do our own

Also sell charging cables too but that's a small sideline. Currently getting the power banks rendered to use on the new website. Just using high Def pics on the old website for now. Thanks for asking, early days but it's going well

I'm always interested in these kinds of business. When I was living in Hong Kong I knew a lot of people in the sourcing business so learnt a lot about product development and manufacturing (which is why I'm never surprised by failed kickstarters :P). I guess if you're starting with some kind of commodity product like a power bank/charger and having a little finish/customisation, you avoid much of the complexity of developing a new product.

It's been in the back of my mind to use some savings to try something similar if I ever have the spare time. Do you mind if I ask what kind of capital you needed to get started?

The manufacturer we use is a small startup so I know their inhouse design isn't being used elsewhere. As far as I can work out, we're the only ones in teh UK selling them.

Well, what I mean is, power banks are very much a commodity product, you can go select from dozens of almost identical products on Alibaba. You're not actually designing anything or doing and of the infuriating slow product development iteration. Good way to do business :)

Any discounts available to OcUK folk @subbytna ?? ;)

No real news from me, been at my current contract since September and it's ok, very slow paced and not hugely challenging but can't complain I suppose.
