This Business and Moment...

I've been approached for a permanent role which I am considering. Part of the package is car allowance of £4.8k - does this just get paid into my bank on top my my salary less tax?

Yeah that’s how it usually works.

Check for any stipulations on age of car etc. Also if you do many miles you can claim the tax back on the difference on what you get paid and the 45p HMRC rate.

Also congrats :)

Cheers. So I can keep my current car if I want? Or does it depend on the employer?

Yeah should be fine. Some companies stipulate you need a car less than 4yrs old etc. But others don't care. One guy i used to work with got about 400pm car allowance and drove a 15yr old Fiesta, although he wasn't client facing and didn't really travel for work.

As Marv says, you need to ask your employer for a copy of the car policy and see what that stipulates. Worth looking at the car park and quietly sounding out new colleagues once you've started to see how rigorously a policy is enforced.

A reasonable employer shouldn't expect you to be buying a new car if you've got a 3 month or similar probation period.

Thanks. It's preliminary stages at the moment, would have to have an interview yet etc but the hiring manager seems keen so far. I'm contracting now and have been since 2012 however the lure of permanent employment and the benefits is strong, especially the company who have approached me.

The role would be home based and 50% travel to client sites, so I'd image they would want me in something new. My current Focus daily is a 2016 car so could probably keep it policy dependent.

Still unsure if I have a contract for next year yet. Or who my boss is. Which is nice. They've put in a ton of meetings for me next year and I just got awarded 2 internal awards for awesome work (not sure how but I don't complain :P ) so hopefully I'll get one thrown my way.

Always end of year fun. Had my birthday at the weekend and now I'm just about to head to A&E as I've ****** up my back again. Recurring issue I just never have got sorted, so thought it's about time I checked it out

Wondered what all that wine was for on Friday night!

Promotion this week  Lead AI Programmer.

It's taken pretty much bang on 5 years to get back to a lead position after switching from finance industry to game dev. Been a lot of hard work, but worth it :)

Congrats, I had a job interview for a role in Düsseldorf 2 week ago but didnt make it through to the 3rd interview.....2nd time now for roles in Düsseldorf :o

I have a technical interview this afternoon over Skype, for essentially the same role I’m in now, but without the threat of redundancy hanging over me, in a far larger and expanding company where promotion doesn’t depend on filling dead men’s shoes. The salary’s the same, but the benefits on offer are far better. Nervous but hopeful, I’ll know whether I have the job or not by the end of today. :)

How did the Swedish one work out?

Let you know tomorrow, as its in the morning. Starts off with an office tour by the two people who interviewed me over Skype a few weeks back.

Currently here in Stockholm, relaxing in a nice hotel, flown over here this afternoon and everything paid for them, so its looking positive so far :)

After not getting the Düsseldorf role's and the role in Luxembourg (technical interview over the phone went badily on Monday) I need this final interview to turn out well for me so I can move on with my career in IT.

Just been offered a promotion at my current organisation (which is great) but will have to manage someone who also interviewed for the job. I’ve managed people before, but never someone who potentially has a chip on their shoulder from day 1! Any tips?

Just finished the interview, took 4 hours, they showed me around the office, meet various people in the team and spent the final hour being interviewed by HR. Will see in 2 weeks if they offer me the job.
