This Business and Moment...

Some MF gazumped us on that house, which is a pain in the rear. At the same time, it is what it is and we're still on the lookout. We wouldn't have gone up in what we'd have paid for it anyway, so you know. Still a pain though.
Sorry to hear that!

On the flip side mine continues to progress. Mortgage approved. Evaluation by the bank is being scheduled. My estate agent is taking care of it all. Wheels are still turning

2.5 weeks till last day. Forms signed to authorise ordering of my home IT equipment. Hotel booked and expenses/mileage forms provided for first two weeks training down south. First time getting to go away for more than a day fully on expenses :D

First handover meeting with head of department, reaffirmed my decision to leave is correct :o

Lodger moved in on Sunday so first months rent plus deposit in the bank.

Oh and because I'm working right up to the end I'll be getting paid for 13.5 days holiday too. Winner.

Got a few things to pay off from the house renovations last year but should be able to clear that in a few months then on to looking at buying a second property in Autumn when I can re-mortgage to pull some equity out.

Can be it seems. I won't lie, I am really disappointed, but know it can't change things and if that's the way it is, can't do anything about it so no use dwelling. Nothing on the market we like at the moment like it, so we just stock pile some savings, get ourselves ready and sort it.

Is the deposit for lodgers not required to be held with something like the DPS like with usual rentals?

No response internally and no follow up externally.. I'm getting a bit worried.

Don't want to keep waiting forever but thought I'd have heard either way internally by now. Will give it until lunch time for timezones etc but it's looking like my hand is going to be forced and I'll be moving abroad at this rate :(

Was looking at other contract roles as my current one while fine, has had some interesting challenges as of late due to to corporate red tape. But...they’ve offered me a long extension a nice increase on my day rate, so think I may stay.

Should keep me going until end of March 2020, at which point, we have the IR35 joys to consider :D

Funnily enough, on a semi-related note. Checked my days off since starting contracting 4 years ago. In 4 years, I’ve taken 14 days off as holiday :( obviously not including bank holidays. That’s crazy, and probably explains a lot about why I feel like I’m running on empty lately :D

I could probably imagine it's easy doing that as a contractor. I regularly hit around October/November and realise i have loads of days left to use before the end of the year so just start taking them for the sake of it.

When you're a contractor and thinking this day off is gonna cost me hundreds of pounds it makes things much harder i imagine!

I keep saying I’ll have time off when I don’t get renewed, but I keep getting renewed :p Or have some time off in between companies, but then a great role comes up which involves starting straight away.

But yeah, you’re right. I just can’t face throwing away all that money to sit at home doing nothing. Even booking a holiday, I consider the money I’m not getting paid as part of the expense! It’s not a good attitude to have as like I say, it’s catching up to me :(

So, had an interview on Wednesday for another role, 1st/2nd line rather than the 2nd/3rd line I ideally wanted, and the hours aren't the best (rotating shifts covering between 7am and 8pm, with the odd weekend), but the progression opportunities are infinitely better than where I am.

Got a call this afternoon with an offer :D

It's a couple grand less than I want, and with the role being a fairly sideways move I've gone back to see if they've willing to go another 2k, if they do it'll be a yes - if not then I'll have long think about it over the weekend.

Just had a short 6 week extension to my current contract come through, taking me up to 18th April. I've signed it but still thinking about moving on, only 2 weeks notice in the extension which isn't a problem!

Bored in a legal role. Too much effort / stress / admin / being an invisible thankless superman (that costs too much money). Any ideas for what I could move into without taking a dramatic mega-lol paycut? I feel kind of pot committed with my skill set :/

I looked at air traffic control but the pay drop would be comparatively brutal for the first few years.

A lazy question really and probably indicative of my attitudes. I want it all. In fact, why don’t you all just send me some money and letters telling me how awesome I am? That’ll make me feel less dead inside.

Anywho, bright ideas always welcome.

What's your current role and level of experience?
Qualified solicitor (4 years PQE) working in commercial property. There is pretty much an endless suite of things to learn in that field and I continue to learn (somewhat akin to being thrown into the operating theatre and being told ‘don’t mess up but also do it as quickly as possible, thanks’). I think I’m well liked and it’s far from terrible (I don’t think I’d want to change employer in the legal world) and I even enjoy applying the subject matter and making myself feel clever.... I just don’t really want to exhaust myself in life making millionaires even richer. As arrogant as it sounds it feels like a waste of energy / capabilities, pushing people that hard for these outcomes. Pretty much everyone the same age feels the same in my line of work. Climbing to the top of the ladder is like just too much of a sacrifice (I don’t want to spend all my evenings networking and schmoozing) and it’s all so involved it becomes somewhat inescapable because of, admittedly, the pay, and because you feel emotionally responsible for ensuring the ship doesn’t sink / you don’t let others down. Think one of my superiors is on an 18 month notice period!

Such delusions of grandeur - I think I may just be better off doing some volunteering in my spare time or something :p

There are gaps to be plugged in me that won’t come from changing jobs, I think. All I know is that endless ‘achieving’ in itself by hardwork is actually pretty underwhelming, so I offer caution to those who may fall into the same trap.
