This Business and Moment...

I put as one of my objectives this year "Try not to kill anyone" so you know.

The whole objective thing for external people is stupid, so I like to make a mockery of it.

I agree. I also find it funny when managers spend so much time compiling KPI's and whatnot that their other objectives suffer, therefore making their own KPI's worse.

So maybe I am jinxing it, but here goes anyway.

Yesterday I got a new connection on LinkedIN from an IT Outsourcing company based here in Lisbon. They're actually 2 doors down from where I work now.

The contact then messaged me asking me if I am looking for work as they have a large offshoring project coming up and need someone of my skills. So I said sure, sent her my CV, we exchanged a few emails and that was it.

Then late evening, about 7pm the woman calls me and explains the role a bit more. She said its doing an SCCM project for a very large company with 14,000 users! She didn't give specifics but I am guessing its an SCCM upgrade/overhaul as a company of that size HAS to have something in place already.

She said the client is looking to move quickly and I could hear back as soon as today! - they have my CV and want to get the ball rolling. I fit all the requirements etc. I would be working for the outsourcing company but subcontracted to the client.

Money is good, double what I am on now. No other details such as holiday etc have been discussed yet. But we'll see what happens.

Fingers crossed! :)

I've got this weird feeling. I am THIS close to finding something else and being on a happier path.

Will post updates.

Awesome. Let's hope you hear back and it's good :)

It may sound strange to those who read my story above but that is the trimmed version.. I was looking and applying everywhere before I secured something that suited me. Forgot to mention the time I got offered a job for £5k more but turned it down due to them having enforcement action, which annoyed them (lol) etc.

Anyway.. finding a job is not easy. Especially when you're putting your hopes in to each of the interviews or call backs. To have someone basically headhunt you for double the wages is fantastic. Even if you don't get it you get the knowledge that something has sparked with someone and it's just a matter of time.

Plot twist: you start the job and it's the guy from the Skype call with a comedy moustache :D

Thanks guys!

I've just had a call from another outsourcing company I registered with 2 weeks ago who have a potential role. So I am filling out the form now.

Good thing I am being paid to do this :D

Good to hear it. Searching for a job is rarely an easy prospect, particularly if you're settled abroad. I'm a firm believer that by putting yourself out there, something great will always come along. Being proactive - LinkedIn being a primary resource - can be a bit of a hurdle to overcome, but it can open up so many doors.

Best of luck.

Thanks toshj. Coming to Portugal was daunting for many reasons. A big one was finding a job where I am happy. Be it remotely or locally. Hopefully I can soon cross this one off the list :)

Sent an application in for a position at sky the other week - In-Home Connectivity Expert so installing broadband, sorting out wifi etc for customers.

Was really keen, spent ages tailoring cv and writing cover letter/filling in online form.
Just got email back after about 10 days saying that I got through to next stage however I did not meet postcode requirements (my house is 35 minutes away which is 5 minutes too far for them)

Bit gutted was happy to travel etc .
Having bit of hard time tbh. I left the army when I was still a young man at 21 , done @#$/ labouring jobs for a while after. Went to college and did hnc and hnd in computing but never managed to land myself job in desktop support or similar role which would be my dream job.
I've been mostly doing customer service type jobs since.

left police scotland as a call handler few months back due to stress as there were too many changes going on and it's stressful enough as it is already with people's lives depending on me.
Working atm but can't get a break, I've probably applied for a few dozen It related jobs in the last few months and I've even emailed local businesses in area to see about voluntary work to get some experience but no luck.

I'll post something up on my LinkedIN. See if anything comes up for you.

Can't promise anything but who knows :)

EDIT: If you're on LinkedIN then connect with me and I'll forward anything on and if you're not, then get on LinkedIN. Could be a big help for you :)

Following on from this, someone in my team left on Monday so I asked my manager earlier about what was happening with their position, I'm on a contract at the moment, albeit I've been here 2 years and have another 10 months left, as their job was permanent, and it's actually alright working here so I'd like a permanent job!

Basically he was told he doesn't know and that the deadline for the managers to submit the 'refocus' plan to the head of ICT is Thursday next week and he doesn't know what it looks like right now, he had seen a draft a week or so ago but apparently that's been changed and now our area looks very different again with different roles etc.

Guess I'll just have to watch this space then.

And following on from this...

The position that is vacant in my team has been 'deleted' in the proposed 'refocus'. And within the refocus another team and their members are technically being 'at risk' so I'm apparently not allowed to apply for any of the available or new positions that are being created until they have sorted themselves out.

Brilliant.

We have a customer (with emotuit) who has paid for a license, but for a very small set of users ($500 license) so not much for us, but it's money. He's standing up his own Canvas LMS but is having issues along the way and kept asking for our help, it was a real sap and I had to say we can't do it, it was stopping us getting stuff done.
Now, he's spoken to Instructure, who make Canvas LMS and they want $8k to help get it all set up for him and he can't budget that. I was going to say to him I'd have it done for $1.5k flat fee, if I can persuade Sean to do it, that is, and if he'd also go for it.

I'd love to help him for nothing but it puts a massive dent in our releases for features.

See what I can do, as I don't want to lose his custom (we don't have many!) and it's a good cause.

Muzza - have you considered BT / Openreach? I used to work for BT before I ended up here at Microsoft. I have helped a few of my friends with CVs etc to get in the door as field engineers which seems like it would be right up your street? I see you are from West Lothian, not sure if we have chatted before but I would be happy to help if you want to reach out via trust

Cheers,
Blair

I know it sucks but business is business, you need to look after your own. Working for free doesn't keep the lights on unfortunately. Its one of those heart pulling decisions though.
