This Business and Moment...

Final nail before asking for the money you deserve, or spitting the dummy out?

Already asked for more money when they merged 4 jobs into one and gave it to me, brought it up again when weekends were introduced.

No joy so time to move on. I've one app in and I'm currently looking for others. No dummy spitting. I'll write up procedures on everything, look for other employment and then when I leave the next person will just be able to pick it up and run with it.

Sounds like you need to look for something else, or see if you can find something more challenging in your current employers remit to offer.

Many people have said here that you are being taken advantage of, you need to do one of three things:

1. Be happy as you are, because it doesn't sound like it's going to change where you work. Stop doing extra work, you're not being paid enough to do it, just 9-5 it and don't check emails or anything out of your contracted hours.
2. Find employment elsewhere, hopefully somewhere that actually pays you some real money!
3. Go to your boss and say you need more money, you know, for life things? I know complete idiots that don't know anything that get paid what you earn! If they can't or won't do anything, then do option 2. Option 1 would make you look silly if you did this :P

I'm not saying that 1. is a bad idea, but you need to fully appreciate that if you do option 1 then nothing will fundamentally change. The company you work for doesn't sound like it's going to treat you any differently to how it has been doing.

Nah, doing number 1 isn't in my personality. As I mentioned above, already tried number 3 so that leaves me with number 2. What I may do though is offer to stay part of the team here as an when they need emergency cover and say it'll be a hourly paid position, and that will allow me to take advantage of other areas of the business :)

If there is one thing I have learnt over the last 11 years of being employed, is that you have to look after number 1. No one else will do it for you. Going above and beyond rarely gets recognised or cared about. The best way hard work can be recognised is in your monthly salary, and yours is lacking.

You don't owe this company you work for anything, they are paying you below what you think you are worth, and don't care about you enough to do anything about it. This is despite you raising it.

You should not do extra work unpaid, you should not just accept this expectation of you either. It's ridiculous. They've changed your role and your contract and offered you nothing for it.

Get something better in the bag and hand your notice in, don't offer yourself for "cover", even paid. Don't document anything at all, they probably won't ask you to anyway. You don't owe this company this level of regard, the quicker you get out of the mindset of being a pushover the better you will feel about yourself. You owe them nothing at all, don't try and be more helpful than you need to be to get by here.

When you're gone and they need something fixed, then it's their own damn fault for being short sighted and letting you go. If you get a job and they counter offer, don't accept it either, no matter how many empty promises you get. I've seen it time and time again where people hang on hoping for the pay rise that never comes, or the promotion they will never achieve. Don't be that person.

If they call you up for help or assistance after you're gone, quote stupidly high rates for your time.

I've reached a point where I can see that if I want to earn more in IT as a permie, then I need to consider and push for management roles. But...

The trouble is I am team lead and semi-manage a team which is already boring me with the amount of meetings I have to go to to hear project managers trying to buy our time and sweet talk us into delivering stuff that is impossible in the time they want it. Managing is boring to me. I don't enjoy it or feel good managing. I actually prefer to take orders and deliver stuff, even to harsh deadlines. Being a project manager for me would be the most unrewarding thing ever and I despise what some of them get paid, for essentially "checking in" with various people a couple of times a week and nicely asking them to get a move on and do their bit, whilst otherwise doing not a lot.

I thrive on the technical side of things. Building and creating things. I should have been a coder/dev/programmer I think. I'm in an application support role managing code releases. It's good for me because it can be technical and require fixes/automation/configuration/build etc.

I manage a contractor that does everything I do but a bit less if anything, and he's probably on about double what I earn.
I think I need to look into contracting but I kind of don't know where to start.

Maybe re-skill in test automation or something like that. Development is a much larger leap and would require a greater commitment. IMO.

Any news Phate? Pretty poor that he's kept you hanging like this :(

Sweet FA. I tried calling him at lunch and no answer. (sorry for the swearing don but I am really frustrated)

It's so strange, contact was so regular before now its completely nothing. I'm genuinely wondering if he's gone on holiday and left his Skype signed in or something similar. Or something has happened which means the recruitment has taken a back burner.

I'm still looking for a job and not waiting. I feel very much "over it" now if that makes sense. If he comes back to me and offers me the job I'll take it, but he'd have to reply to me in that case!

I won't lie. I did some social media stalking earlier but the man either has nothing or its completely hidden from anyone who isn't a friend. I was trying to see if he had posted anything about what he had been up to which could explain his absence, but like I say. No account to be found.

I've got a week off coming up in 2 weeks which I'm now focusing on along with job hunting, I need some positivity. Coming home from work and feeling so down is really beginning to affect me, it's bringing my GF down as well as she hates seeing me like this.

Also as I said in a previous post. I've given myself a time limit (which is January) if I don't find anything I'll take a serious look into starting my own business venture. I've got good ideas, and a potential uncle in law who would be interested in investing. So we'll see.

EDIT: Admittedly this is not a great time of year to look for work. So I won't be surprised if I don't find a job before Xmas.

Following on from yesterday I had a bit of a rubbish nights sleep and every time I checked I looked at Skype and the CEO was online and available. This is (to me) making it look more and more like he's not at his computer but Skype is signed in.

So maybe there is hope. The job search continues either way. Can't get down about it :)

Mate, I feel you. I'd love to get this one contract in the UK as it's a great project, great money and I was shortlisted... it would just make things line up as best as possible for going back with everything. Worst is the Mrs knows about it and she's like all yay this'll be great! I'm like don't for god's sake bank on this, as there is more chance of it not happening that is. The pressure you then feel is immense.
I haven't heard **** and I'm just carrying on looking around. It's mega stressful though, but you have to just plough on and do other applications/ keep busying yourself, don't lose sleep over it. It's not worth it. Just find other options, it'll all come good.

Definitely mate. I wasn't losing sleep due to the job. Just a cack nights sleep overall :p one of those things, just happened to check Skype due to my own theory and conclusions really.

My missus has done the same. She was saying about how perfect it would be, like you say, good money, flexibility etc etc...everything ideal. I now feel this huge pressure to get it or something similar. I feel like its all "down to me" even though she has a job of her own.

But I've set up CWJob alerts. Am looking on LinkedIN and other sites everyday. Something will come up. :)

Will do mate, thanks. There are a ton of roles for me... just a ton of people out there for them.

I wish it was re, emotuit, it's just really slow on sales cycles and I really need to be hitting it full time, but then I can't... so it's a vicious cycle! It's a slow start that's for sure. We just don't have the resource at the moment.

Maybe he died and you're the prime suspect? I hope you enjoy long showers ;)

Seriously though: I've always found that "no news is good news". Maybe he's taking time out and has lost track of time or maybe he's found someone but doesn't have the back bone to tell you.

If you haven't heard in a month then forget it tbh.

Well those are possibilities I cannot rule out just yet! :D

It is of course possible that he has found someone else but like I say he REALLY seemed like the type to call back.

Ah well. I'll wait. Keep looking. If I don't get it it wasn't meant for me.

The contract I'm on and have been here in various forms for the last 5yrs, the team I'm currently in is splitting. Now, I kinda just come and do what I need to and bugger off as I'm really not in to rocking boats right now as it pays the bills and all that.
Yet, I also don't want the person that will ultimately be asked to lead one of these teams, to get the job. It's not that I don't like him, I do. I'd class him as a mate. Yet, he doesn't want the job as it would put him as a direct report to someone he doesn't like and he's a god awful man manager. Instead, I'd be much better at it. So today I told my boss this. I was like, look, I'm much better than he is and a much better fit for the role.
Will see how that goes down...

I just am getting bored of being a yes man, when this place is huge yet so much **** poor management in place. With that I just emailed the CTO telling him he needs to stop with al the BS metrics that come out green for everyone's KPIs as they're useless and don't help anyone. Explained why and what they should do differently and why.

Yea, I'm on one of those today.
