If you're talking sbout being on the stand, Presumably thinking about what he's saying and getting the right words ready to use. The choice of a word could have significance to what he means one way or the other.

Might be from all the chemicals he's taken over the years, might be that he's been coached to talk that way so that it makes him seem less forceful, more "timid" and less brash/confident
