Those who shout abuse at retail workers

I don't think I could bring myself to ever work in retail again. Or anything related to working directly with actual customers/the public. Or selling stuff. It's bad enough in my early IT days dealing with "users" of said companies. But dealing with general members of the public is just not something I want to waste my life on.

Tell me about it, I picked up a fare in Grays Inn Road once, who asked for Thornhill Crescent, I approached from Matilda Street, toward Thornhill Square, and Thornhill Crescent is at the far side of the square, which you can turn left or right into.
I said, “Left or right?” as I got to the square, he said, “You’re the driver.”
I said, “Yes, but I don’t live in your house”, I wanted to add ‘you blank’, but I didn’t.

I worked in a jobcentre many years ago. The things I saw... Shouting and threats were at least a weekly occurrence. Violent attacks were less common, but happened.

Customer service levels were shameful, on the whole, and a few of the staff were mindless automatons who were deliberately antagonistic and cruel. Some of the "customers" were idiots, but most of them were decent people.

I left there, not because of the claimants, but because of the management.

My advice to the OP is, if you don't like your job, and don't think it will change, get a different job.
