Time for a change I think

In that case, you need a Mondeo

A little update on this. The ST170 has had a lot of problems of late which has ended up in me shelling out a grand to keep it on the road these last 2 months (discs and pads, steering rack went, power steerign pump, the list goes on and on..), not to mention my mechanic said it has started to develop the most common ST170 fault, the flywheel is on its way out and thats £1200 to fix:(

Anywho's, I thought enough was enough and went looking for a boring mondeo. My mechanic said id be lucky to get a £1500 for the focus as no one wants em any more and the flywheel issue will cost a lot to fix, plus he said they are a dog of a car anyway. Shame he didnt tell me this before I bought it but there you go.

Went to a few dealers over the weekend, managed to find a 2.0 TDCI Zetec (2004, 130bhp model with 6 speed gearbox) at the right price and in very good nick. Plus after a bit of haggling with the dealer I managed to get £2,400 for mine. Took it for a test drive and when it starts its a bit if a tractor but once its moving it supprisingly smooth. Its actually not to slow either, it certainly feels as quick as the focus and you dont have to wring its neck to get it to go anywhere.

Im off to hand in the focus and pick it up at 4pm today. Just hopign nothing else falls off my car in the meantime :p

I know I will prob get slated for buying the diesal and not the petrol but it serves its purpose as a cheap to run stop gap car. Its only going to be kept for no more then 2 years.

dont they suffer from the same flywheel problems, but also have injector and turbo issues as loads of caned hard as rep cars?

dont want to sound negative but swapping from one to the next wont immediately solve all your problems

That model did suffer from the flywheel issue but the dealer replaced it before before he put it up for sale. Said the work cost a grand to sort and now will be good for a good few years. Plus car came with a pretty good warrenty as well.

Congrats. Should be decent car as long as the injectors and turbo are all ok.

How much did you pay in the end?

Just got back, no probs with the handover. Warentee is a 5 star AA 12 month warrentee, with all the extras, turbo, injectors etc.

Turbo issues aren't common on these - well no more than any other turbo car. You didn't say the mileage, but going to a tdci mondeo because you've had a flywheel issue is sort of lolworthy. However, if it's been replaced recently it will be the revised part which is more robust.

Generally very reliable cars, if it's not been ragged and has been looked after then it should be fine - but if the warranty is that good then its worth seeing if you can extend it for another year if thats how long you're planning to keep it.

If its a euro 3 (vacuum actuated turbo and egr) which it should be at 2004, cap the EGR. The plates are only a few quid and will save you a lot of hassle as well as improving low end pickup a bit.

Rix? Are you joking? Please never buy a car from there.

A few family members have spent tens of thousands of pounds with them and couldn't be happier, including one who had to take their car back to them after a month with some problems and they fixed it no problem.

Compared to the alternatives, they're great.

Motors really are making spec me threads worthless. Instead of helping the OP, you ignore most of his requirements, single out the one point you can mock, and then make silly assumptions about a car you clearly haven't got a clue about.

The ST170 is particularly bad on fuel, there have been two in the family and my old next door neighbour, and they all encountered similarly poor fuel economy.

The sad fact of Motors is that its become one big willy waving exercise - everyone always trying to show they know more, make someone else look bad, or almost bully someone in to changing their mind from buying the car they want to some placebo value car designated by Motors.

They were lucky. Reggie Rix is notorious in the motor trade
