Time for a daily

Well truth be told, I'm fed up of taking the Evo to work. While it's a great car, I just don't get the enjoyment out of it anymore and I'm getting a little bit concerned about the mileage.

So, I want a daily. I don't want something boring as I'll just end up falling asleep, I fancy something with a little bit of poke still, so 150bhp + and something that will end up saving me fuel money while not being totally soul destroying on a relatively twisty 40 mile each way b road trip.

Thinking either VAG diesel, such as this and change the wheels:

Or an E39 / E46 3.0 petrol.

Any other ideas? Don't really want to spend more than £2.5k as that then starts defeating the object.

I don't really understand, how can the shortlist be either a diesel VW or a 3 litre E39?

Either you want 50mpg or you want 25mpg? :p

As long as it does over 25mpg and won't die on me I'm not too fussed. Really fancied the BMW but I think I'll struggle with my budget so started looking at alternates.

I would recommend the Leon over the Golf cheaper and a slightly better drive but there not exactly exciting to drive down a good road, soul destroying no but what about a e46 320d if you wanted the diesel of even the 330d although they are thirsty for a diesel.

I understand where you're coming from, but I don't think you'll get a x30i worth having for £2.5k

Check out everything on that Golf platform with the pd150- Leon and Bora and Toledo.
I'd try to find a Leon FR TDI if I were you.

The PD 130 could be worth a look, it's got a 6-speed box but I'm not sure how much slower it is than the 150s.

This is the most random thread ever. How is that on the same list as an E39 530i?

Do you want a 3 litre executive saloon or an economical diesel hatchback?

An E39 530i will make the Leon look and feel like a cheap and nasty hatchback. The Leon will make the 530i look like an expensive to run money sucking liability. Which car is best is surely dictated by what you want out of a car?

Go with the Leon. I think it'll be fine in the twisties.
Can you find one with lower mileage in budget though?

As much as I dislike the Leon it sounds like a better 'daily driver alongside my Evo' than a 3 litre E39 or E46 does. The E39/E46 are more 'one car for all', it isn't really economical or cheap enough to be a daily driver alongside something else if you see what I mean.

Yeah I'm swaying toward the Leon/Golf, just a case of finding one.

I see this mornings EP3 idea is out of the window. :p

I was looking last night, man there are some rough ones. If I got a Diesel that can do 50mpg I save around £50 a week on fuel, that's not taking into account the servicing costs, so it's looking good for a VAG TDI. Fuel alone, on a £2000 car, it's paid for itself within a year.

Scrap the diesel idea. Get something with a decent turbocharged petrol engine. A Saab 9-3 Aero or a Skoda Octavia VRS. They will both return decent MPG if driven the right way while still having the grunt if needed. Having a 150k+ mile diesel is just asking for problems. 2.5k with get you both of the mentioned in a petrol variant with less than 100k.

What happened to the Volvo in the end?

Money isn't everything. You might save some, but you have to balance that with the downside of having to drive around in a diesel.

I'm not sure I'd be too bothered with the fact it's a diesel when there's an Evo waiting for me at home. If I was that bothered, I'd take the Evo to work everyday.

I don't understand why you would need a second car. The Evo is a 4 door saloon, it is practical and relatively comfy. Yeah the MPG is pants and servicing is high but these things come as part of the package.

Buying a 2K shed to save £50 a week will take a long time to repay itself and even when it does, there is the risk of something breaking plus there is now double the servicing, MOTs and insurance to consider.

Is the extra £50 in fuel a week for the EVO going to break you? After all that 2K cost for the shed can buy a lot of fuel for the EVO.
