Time to game

I'm only 27 (only...) but I'm wondering, will it get worse or is it just the norm that you just put gaming down as a hobby you do when you feel like it?
It gets better, in fact, judging by the responses from the older crowd versus the younger.

I'm notably older than you, with a semi-stressful job in critical asset engineering that has me on the clock from 10am until "whenever". I don't usually leave the office until after 6 (and am here right now). If I'm just monitoring, I may be logged into the laptop while doing stuff at home, so can be on the clock right up until 2am.
Even later if I actually have to go back out on-site for a night shift.
I also have a wife and two little ones.

I game up to 40 hours a week quite easily. More if I'm playing Elite and/or have a weekend to myself. It's at the point where I'll be taking leave to just sit there and have massive long gaming sessions!

An even older friend leaves home at 6am to reach London for a 9am start, works all day and then comes home. He somehow manages more gaming hours per week than I do.

So based on all that, I'd say your time management is just something you'll figure out how to manage as you get older.

What is this witchcraft?!?!? How do you get a "weekend to myself"?

Does not compute.

At uni I had all the time in the world to play games but now in full time employment and studying a masters on the side and living with my partner means I don't have half as much time to game. To think when Skyrim came out I spent the best part of 12 hours playing it on the Saturday... Those were the days!

 Unless you're gaming when at work, or sleep about 5 hours a night, then you must surely have almost no interaction with your family. How on earth do you fit in those sort of gaming hours?

A machine wired to his brain so he can play whilst he's sleeping :p

Agree, I think it's a bit of an exaggeration. Either he has NO contact with his family/friends and spends all waking moments during the week and at least half the weekend on the PC, or no job, on benefits on the PC all week.

I'm around until next week, thanks for the love,
Regards

I'm 29 and spend on average 10 hours a week gaming.
I work silly kinds of hours and finish late so I have two choices on what I can do.
1) I could go out and spend a fortune each night getting smashed like a lot of the people I work with do or
2) I can come home put on a game, movie or sit back with a book.

I love how you see your only option for going out as "getting smashed". You know, you can go out and socialise and have a great time without getting hammered...

41 here and I find it hard to game after work shifts, much easier to focus and compete at a decent level and have fun on non-work days.

I've also noticed the range of games I play has reduced somewhat, back in 2000 or so I played Unreal Tournament to death (hence the alias) along with sports games plus MSN Gaming Zone. But as I've got older, the genre of game I am prepared to play for more than a few minutes is getting increasingly focused on only sim racers!

I used to get smashed and call it being social. These days, I rarely get drunk when going out. But when I do... Oh boy the hangovers. It's just not possible to survive them anymore! I used to bounce around on 3 nights in a row! I can barely do 1!!!

These days, I agree, I'd rather head out to meet my mates for a fry up in the morning, have friends round in the evening.

BUT, some weekends, nothing beats being insanely lazy and sitting infront of a game all weekend. Which is what I intend to do this Sunday.

36 and married no kids

There was a time a couple of years ago when I used to crave games and never had enough time to play. These days though I just can't get into big all engulfing stuff at all anymore and so mainly play indie titles / mobile stuff / home arcade.

My problem now if finding time to make music on my PC. You need a lot of time to do that and this is my new frustration.

I spend around 45-50 hours a week with the guys I work with.
When they go out after work which is usually around 1am most of the people who are already out are smashed and the rest down as much as possible just to try and catch up.

I rarely drink anymore and being sober around everyone while they are drunk just doesn't appeal.

When I am with my friends outside work we socialize properly going out for meals etc

Doesn't happen as often as I'd like, but sometimes the Mrs does go away. Used to do that more often when she was in a bike Club.

So what you're saying is ttaskmaster is that by erasing sleep, you can make this work? :D
I sleep for about 6-7 hrs a night. Bed around 2, get up around 9, sort things out, head to work and start at 10 usually. Get home around 7. Depending on what takes priority, I may not even switch my own PC on at all that evening...

How on earth do you fit in those sort of gaming hours?
I did say "up to". That doesn't mean a full 40hrs each and every week. Sometimes I do have things that need doing.
I'll usually get 4-5 hrs a night, though.

I have a small circle of friends, but I do spend a fair bit of time with them. That's actually what the Mrs complains about - I spend more time over there than at home, though I think she's just freaked out because the one I spend most time with is her ex! :D

Also - Games do usually have a 'pause' feature, you know... ;)

no job, on benefits on the PC all week.
Not at all - I just manage and facilitate my time well.

I also have a laptop and smartphone as well as work PC and remote system access from home, so can often get the work done Wherever, Whenever (We're meant to be together...!!).
I can have the laptop to one side and monitor up to four on-site crews, while playing Wolfenstein or Elite quite easily.
