Time to get me McJob

A job is a job :)

Any job that pays a wage can be useful when looking for an alternative.

If you know you're not going to be there forever then you shouldn't let people put you down for wanting to do the job.

i worked in KFC for nearly 2 years, loved working with the people, was the customers that did my head in.

Everyone says its a crap job, but if no-one did it, everyone would be moaning that they cant have their daily dosage of junk food

Great support there, snobs.

Are they being snobs or just don't like the idea of a macdonalds job?

I'd personaly have said try a supermarket first - I imagien the pay is the same and your not rushed and stressed all day, every time I've been in a Macdonalds the staff look rushed off their feet in a cramped hot environment.

I guess some bar work is similar - it just looks overworked and understaffed.

Supermarkets can be hectic at christmas but I was never under that amount of pressure.

Manager i knew at macD got 35k a year lol, anything under that gets paid bugger all though, though he might have been regional manager not sure what he said.

You get payed more at most supermarkets and its just as easy to get a job at one. I was working part time at Morrisons when I did the 2 day Mcdonald thing (Morrisons wouldnt let me do more hours), the money I got for sitting on a checkout was the same as the people in "training squad" at Mcdonalds got for training all the new staff!

I loved working at Maccies for 6 years whilst doing A levels then holiday from Uni. Super flexible hours, plenty of similar aged and driven people and a good laugh, mainly in the kitchens mind. Will teach you far more about teamwork and speaking to people than stacking any shelf.

Does depend on what the store is like though and which Hitler wannabe is trying to run the place.

Again, congrats to you for getting a job other than signing on or something.

But I have to echo other people's thoughts; surely there's something else nearby? :p I'd much rather work in a Supermarket than McDonalds personally, I'm not sure I could stand the smell of McDonalds all day long, It would really depress me :D

Right, 1 Week of being unemployed and after circa 20 applications/sending off of CV's it seems unlikely I'm going to be able to get much else so I've decided tomorrow to take the plunge and apply at McD's!

Anyone ever worked there? whats it like? whats starting wage? What are they like with ours? often get called in to cover others/are they flexible etc?

You'll get stick from many of the people on here, but you can do a lot worse than working in McDonalds if you're doing min/low wage work.

I worked there for 18 months after I graduated for much the same reasons as you (bills to pay, not getting taken for the jobs I wanted and so on). It's hard work (not in thinking, but in rushing around) but generally the company treats their staff well, there's plenty of hours availability and a very large amount of flexibility in hours available. They are much better to work for than most small, low paying local jobs, you get free food on shift (small thing, but it makes a difference when you're earning that sort of wage), there's usually reasonable promotion opportunities if you're any good.

How good a particular store is will always depend on the store manager, I've worked for some great McDonalds managers, and some utterly crap ones, but normally the local grapevine will tell you which are the good and bad stores in an area.

Would I recommend it as a career? No, although if you're in management it's not that bad. Is it better than sitting at home being unemployed? Definitely.

Your hands will get covered in burns from the grill, you will be covered in grease at the end of every day and get a lot of spots, you wont be able to leave on time, all the customors will be rude to you, and you have to eat disgusting Mcdonalds food on your lunch break.

I did 2 days there when I was a student, dont do it, apply for a supermarket job instead.

This man speaks the truth.

Exactly, I worked in Burger King for a couple of summers, it was a good laugh, nice people and free lunches! Whenever people ask me in interviews show me a time when you used teamwork etc. I always talk about good old BK - Busy, high pressure environment, teaches you loads of life skills. go for it!

My brother works there as he's at college, he hates it, he gets paid bugger all, my sister who is younger got a job at George at ASDA and she's on more money than him lol.

A job can be a lot of the time what you make it. Just go and try to get on with everyone, work hard, and itll all pay off. I do think you would be better going for a different retail job as such, as the working conditions would more than likly be better, and depending on the role pay would be better.
I work for o2, currently as a stop gap, as I have not decided whether I wish to go back to uni for 4 years, or start working my way up through work. The wage is very good for what I actually do, I work for a great time, have a brilliant laugh, and there is opportunities to earn bonus and other extras.

I liked working there, from 17 to 22 (part time in the hols when i was back from uni). Our place was pretty decent, well ran and about 100 people on the staff list all of the same age range. Met a lot of good friends and there were some pretty hot girls there

Just be decent at it and you get to do the easy jobs.

People do assume you're stupid though and I think the wages have dropped below the average. When i started it was the highest paid per hour (before min wage was introduced) on the retail park it was on.

Dude - YOU ROCK! I'm not just saying that to be a butthead either. If I was jobless for more than a few days i'd do the same thing as well. I have a family to support and I can't stand people who are on benefits (except child benefit i suppose, but jobseekers benefits is a no-no.) If more people were like you, this country would be a lot better place. I'm not too proud to work at McD's - money is money, and when I have responsibilities and obligations i'll do anything to meet them, including McDs!

Apply at supermarkets instead. The idea's good but your aim is off. If fast food appeals, try Subway. Best job I ever had

Very well said that man.

I'd also echo Simon and Jonnycoupe's comments about the job.
