Time to get me McJob

I worked there for 3 years. I enjoyed it at times and hated it other times. Most of the people where great at my store, met my current girlfriend there. Money is **** poor though. 16-18 is £4.00 and hour 18-21 is £4.55 ph and 22+ is £5.55 ph. Staff trainer and shift manager aren't much better £1-£2 extra repectively.

Apply for the McD job, I worked there, and its fine.
While your working there start applying for something else. Like any retail stores, asda/tescos etc.

The pay is just as good as any other retail job, i.e just above minimum wage. Plenty of scope for overtime too.

Are there no temping agencies near you? The work might be less often, but you get paid more. You can also potentially get offered a contract, that's what happened to me a few summers ago and I've been able to go back every summer since :)

Thought minimum wage was £5.55

Dude - YOU ROCK! I'm not just saying that to be a butthead either. If I was jobless for more than a few days i'd do the same thing as well. I have a family to support and I can't stand people who are on benefits (except child benefit i suppose, but jobseekers benefits is a no-no.) If more people were like you, this country would be a lot better place. I'm not too proud to work at McD's - money is money, and when I have responsibilities and obligations i'll do anything to meet them, including McDs!

I wonder about people who hold these attitudes. THere is no possible glamour or moral victory for those who consider working in a minimum wage, dead end job for people who are willing to abuse you. I assume those who would get so excited about someone taking a **** job instead of spending time on the dole have lives that are either so vapid that they constantly need someone else to give them a function or are still suffering from the deference that you need to Keep Working to be a Good Person, be useful to someone and you'll have value.

You're congratulating him for not being able to find a job and settling for one that he thinks is crap, since when was lowering standards something to congratulate?

If you've spent years of your own time doing a fruitless job then admit that, instead of encouraging others to do the same.

It's almost like the job HAS to be CRAP in order to get such a congratulations... GET a decent job, stop fumbling with your McDonalds application and get some pride. Don't work hard, work smart.

Your sense of pride would just leave me sat here for god knows how long applying for jobs i couldn't possibly get though?

Although I still have my pride. I have pride in the fact that given the chance I will make the most of my job and do it to the best of my ability. Anything wrong with that just because you deem it to be a 'crap' job?

*Shrugs* Haven't even got it yet :o

Apply for a job that you CAN get, but no McDs.

As i posted it seems this is a contradiction in terms (in my case). I've been applying for jobs none stop since October and its just not happening. Inexperience is of course the main reason.

I get where your coming from, but unfortuntly I'm not in a position to be picky! :o

Anyway, I'm happy to give McD's a go, a lot of people say it's been good for them. Cant hurt to try surly?

Stay on the dole and do voluntary work then. Do voluntary work in an area you would like to go into, show enthusiasm, gain experience etc...

Also, you're assuming that a lack of experience has stopped you getting jobs. It is probably as easy to get a retail job in Debenhams as it is in McDonalds, although something like Debenhams would be better on your CV. Remember, whilst many people here are making it seem like working in McDs is something to be proud of, when you are applying for a decent job they might not see it the same.
Some people on this board are probably trying to justify the fact that they spent years idling in McDs because it took that long to get the self-esteem to make a concerted effort and change it.

I've had old friends who think - I'll just go for this low-quality job, and then end up stuck in it, if only because they've convinced themselves that there are no other jobs out there and that they're supposed to be grateful for a crap job.

There is a dangerous mentality surrounding poorly paid jobs, some kind of glamour that the hard work proves your character. Unless you are after a crap job, then don't look for crap jobs.

My mate works at McDonalds and he's been there for 2 or 3 years now. He didn't like it much so he went to try and find a new one and after a bit of trouble so decided to make the best of it. He asked for training in being a floor manager and 6 months later he finished the training, 4 months later he landed the job.

Moral of the story? Job's are what you make of them, hapy thoughts make happy people!

Which one did you apply for. I literally live in the center of town (opposite Primark) I'm often popping in to the McD's on Friar Street when I'm too lazy to cook.

My first real job was at McDonalds. It was the worst experience of my life. Every other person was a manager and they all expected you to listen to their orders before any of the other managers. I'd be given different jobs to do from each one who would then get stupidly angry when one wasn't done because I was busy doing something another manager had demanded I do. I lasted six months, then lost it one shift and told them to "go **** themselves" and walked out. It was wall to wall full of little Hitlers and arse lickers.

My next job was shelf stacking at Asda. The pay was better and it was a much more enjoyable job. There were still one or two little Hitlers, but you knew who your manager was and who could tell you what to do. The other staff members were also much friendlier. I stayed there all the way through my A-levels and through much of university.

I often wonder where your attitude comes from. Having any job is better than having no job. It keeps the money coming in and stops you from sitting at home doing bugger all. He can still apply for jobs in the meantime, but at least he's not stagnating sat at home feeling sorry for himself.

I'd say he is working smart. How do you explain away the gaps in your employment history to other potential employers? "Couldn't be arsed getting a crapper job" doesn't really cut it.

I see where your coming from,

But I've applied for these 'other' jobs. Be it debinhams, john lewis, currys, hmv you name it (within reason!) I've applied if they have vaccancies.

At the moment I just need to get some cash flow going, I need money for rent etc.
