Timeless classics

Before they ruined them and made them exclusive to consoles:

Grand Theft Auto
Grand Theft Auto 2
Grand Theft Auto UK edition

Duke Nukem 3D
Doom
Quake (I remember being at college and me and a few lads managed to get this game playing in the college library amidst their so-called security lol).

Anyone remember MDK? Around 1997 I think that game was released and herald a new era in PC gaming with its visual graphics.

And of course Unreal Tournament.

Warzone 2100! How did I miss that - I absolutely loved that game back on release. I don't think I actually completed it either.

You know it is now Win/Linux/Mac freeware ? http://wz2100.net/ . Last I read, the FMV sequences could not be included in the free release, it's a shame if this is still the case.

Edit: Music and FMV now available :D A definite download for me if Leliana and the world of DA:O ever allow me to leave.

1) Hitman Blood Money.
2) Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 (gfx scale so well, it could have been released 2 years back)
3) CS:source

Half Life 2

Maybe... the original is the classic. I don't think Half Life 2 was as good as the first. It was an amazing game in many many ways, just not as amazing as the first game. Stilol, its worth many many points.

An old time favourite for me has to be Worms, great fun.

Battlezone

Sorry, i downloaded a spectrum emulator last night and since then i have been playing these games and cant seem to stop playing chuckie egg 2. When games don't have eye popping graphics then they have to have great gameplay

Polished your post, but only cos I'm using it in mine :)

In my opinion, HL2 was at least as good as the first, considering the contemporary markets into which each was released. However, I enjoyed HL more - its awesomeness came right out of the blue, whereas HL2 was anticipated. While I believe it met those anticipations, which so few games do, there's just not gonna be that 'wow' factor the first had.

A turn based strategy game I was really impressed with was Celtic Tales: Balor of the Evil Eye.

If you liked the early Civ games and want to try a fantasy tribe sim on an island then look for that. The graphics colour pallet is limited, and chip music of various standards.

There's a lot in there for a game from 1995. Managing harvesting, hero training, trading, invasions, magic. You have to capture all the counties of the island, like Risk. Then do it again once the land has been invaided by Balor's forces.

Recommended getting a list of spell rune combinations to have a clue whats going on when in combat mode.

Shame they didn't make any more in the series (that I know of).
