Hi, this is my first post here in the motors forum, I generally hang about in the pc hardware side of things so please excuse me if this is a bit of a noob question...

I recently bought a set of 4 19" TSW alloys off ebay, and I got them today...my question is, would it be ok for me to just fit the wheels straight onto my car, they have been used, and the tyres fitted and balanced, and the car they were last on is exactly the same model as mine, or would it pay for me to get them put on professionally?

I dont mind doing it myself I just wondered what you guys would recommend....

tia :)

what car are they going on?
do you already have lowered suspension or are you fitting at the same time? If not, the car will look like its on stilts.

you can fit them yourself, however if you are going from say 13 or 14" alloys it would be worth getting them checked over just ot be on the safe side. also you will need to look at getting your speedo recalibrated i would imagine.

its a 2000 plate VW Bora 2.0SE, and Im going from the standard 16" alloys to the new 19" ones, the car isnt lowered...

car is due for a service in the not too distant future, I guess I can get the speedo done then?

Box 'em up and send 'em back.

There's nothing worse than a modern VAG on stilts and big wheels...

Unless you can afford airbags and to have all four arches pulled, rolled, massaged and tubbed then I wouldn't bother.

I did say I was a noob when it comes to car matters, so your last sentence means little to me...

Besides Ive seen the same model on these wheels and it looks great, and the fact they are the same style as is on the Golf R32, I cant imagine them looking bad.

All Boras I have seen on 19 inch wheels have been very, very low.

It costs a lot of money and takes a lot of work to get a car like that low enough on such large wheels...

he's just stating opinion...no need for rolleyes

I agree, cars with massive wheels that aren't lowered can look ridiculous, if you like then fair enough, was the car they came off lowered?

I'd fit them yourself personally, hardly an art to slap a set of wheels on - just need a torque wrench to correctly tighten them

yeah I may well have the car lowered at some point, cant afford it right now.

I'll fit them myself tomorrow and see how they look, if they look rubbish then its no matter I'll take them off and wait to get the car lowered, or sell the wheels on.

What profile tyres are on the rims? It not so much the looks I'd be concerned about, but the car bouncing around all over the place and tramlining on every little crack and rut in the road.

If you do put them on, I'd reccomend you get a 4 wheel laser geometery check done on the car - bigger wheels will show up the slightest misalignment compared to the standard 16's.

19's should be fine, and you can get it lowered a little in the future. I'm guessing they're 35 profile?

Should look good too. Don't listen to the posts above, Penski wouldn't be happy unless it was scraping the floor. ;)

PS. Good luck when it comes to buying tyres, it will *really* hurt your wallet. Not to mention they'll need changing more often too. :(

yeah the tyres are expensive, I have fitted some brand new avon 2xs tyres onto them, 225/35/19.

I hope it will be a good improvement on the standard alloys, with lowering being the next objective.

really?

oh well, thats what was recomended to me. They dont look narrow, they look just right if you ask me, will post some pics in the daylight 2mo...

surely a 3 " increase in total wheel / tyre diameter is going to have a big impact on acceleration?

It won't be a 3" increase though will it.

The 16s will have had a much larger profile tyre on than the 19s, so will even out.
