Today's mass shooting in the US

The San Jose shooter had 22000 rounds of ammunition in his house. Perfectly normal and no need to do anything. :o

I've always found it strange, probably because I'm not a crazy homicidal nutcase, how often with these mass shootings they've gone off quarter cocked so to speak despite having a plan and equipped for a much bigger act - not that I want something worse to happen just find it odd. Maybe they get paranoid someone is on to them and think they have to act before they get stopped or maybe something triggers them and they can't control the impulse or whatever.

Obviously in some cases things won't go down as they planned, etc. whether the law enforcement response stops them or mentally they weren't prepared for the reality of it once they'd started, etc. etc. but been quite a few cases where they've assembled explosives, got themselves a bunch of rifles and so on and lots of ammo but then carried out an act with "just" a couple of handguns and a dozen rounds or so.

What boggles my mind is the cost of 22,000 rounds of ammunition. It's not cheap. $30-$40 for 30 rounds. He spent thousands upon thousands of dollars. Who on earth needs 20,000 rounds? Who looks at their ammo cupboard/stash, sees 10,000 rounds and thinks 'Hmm, need more'?!

Some in the US have been hoarding it due to rumours of bans, increasing prices, shortages, etc. never mind the nutcases.

One a related note the opening seconds of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxLA4ewSLzA

Egged on by the NRA and gun manufacturers telling everyone that the Democrats are going to take their guns away or ban ammunition sales and like the lemmings they are, many have lapped it up and bought more guns and more bullets while the Democrats did nothing during the Obama years and haven't even suggested anything so far this session either. It's all propaganda and marketing to improve sales. And it's worked.

It is a strange story, but this is what gaslighting voters for years or decades does to them, some eventually snap because of the perception that all politicians are the same/nothing changes and they've put a lot of emotional energy into Trump to finally get the country they've been told they want... only nothing has changed.

These people ought to be pitied.

The president has stated publicly that he wants to ban "assault style" firearms. The current ATF director nominee has said similar too.

And the rise in gun ownership and ammo shortage is more to do with the riots that occurred last year.

Mhm, which means they can keep that wedge issue going indefinitely because more guns in the hands of nutters means more mass shootings. Same exact thing with the GOP pretending they'll cut spending or stop abortions.

The reasonable thing to do would be to give up on those points and deal with the mental health crisis instead, but that's too much effort.

What a cess pool they have created over there. Such a shame as otherwise its a lovely place. (parts of it and some of the people).

Also why do a lot of the politicians rock the throwback greasy Italian hair look.

I get the impression the answer is really 'never'. Sandy hook, where 26 people, including 20 children between six and seven years old, and six adult staff members were killed happened and nothing changed.

Always what I have said regarding all this back then probably most disturbing Ive seen and nothing changed really since that day.

I see the stat the other day 17,000 have died in mass shootings in a year thats just crazy.

Americans need to give up the guns for the greater good and future generations how can people feel safe everyone on edge, and the excuse is all the time well there to many guns in circulation if you dont start there wont be a better future.

People having a bad day flip kill there family and other people these last two months alone it happened countless times, easy access to a gun equals recipe for a disaster. I get people love there guns and it maybe cool for some but you need to look past that and do what best your country how can you have kids when there not safe to grow up in a school.

This twitter account makes for sad reading. Guns are endemic, treated as normal household items to be left lying around or on bedside tables or in a kitchen drawer. WellRegulatedMilitia (@Well_Regulated_) / Twitter

Yes, it is crazy. Which should cause anyone to doubt it and check for themself.

Deaths from mass shootings in the USA rarely exceed 100 per year, although it does depend on how you define "mass shooting". You can get a higher figure if you include situations such as two people being killed in a drug deal gone bad. But you're never goiong to get anywhere near 17,000. At best you're counting every single death by shooting as a mass shooting, but of course the vast majority of them aren't. The latest stats I could find from the USA were 14,414 firearm homicides in a year, but that was 2018 so I suppose it's possible there were 17,000 in 2020. But only a tiny proportion were mass shootings. Note that figure includes killing in defence, since that's still a homicide.

The USA barely makes the top 100 countries in terms of total number of homicides per x people.

The situation in the USA is nowhere near as bad as it's often made out to be.

How many people are you willing to sacrifice for your goals? The homicide rate in the USA would increase at least temporarily if guns were banned in the USA because banning them wouldn't stop criminals having them. Even the gun control report commissioned by Barack Obama to support his proposed gun control increases concluded that increasing gun control would increase the homicide rate in the USA. And no, I am not joking. The results of the report (by the CDC) are publically available.
