indeed, you need to go back to Clinton for that... Obama was more concerned with Obama care (and to be fair better healthcare coverage probably would save more lives)
but the assault weapons ban supposedly cost the democrats approx 20 seats last time, it would have taken some moral courage and quite a bit of effort to ram through when his party had control of congress - it isn't something he pushed them for

Nonsence you think the cop should announce his presence in advance when he knows he is massively outgunned....
If you were armed with a pistol and i had an ar15 and you were stupid enough to announce where you were in advance of shooting at me I can guarantee that more than 9 times out of 10 that you would be very quickly dead without even landing a single effective shot on me.
There is no likely cover from fire when the opponent has a rifle in environment like a school. .. The bullets can penetrate all but the densest of material travelling straight through walls....
The only effective cover is cover from view which relies on remaining unseen and undetected by the shooter

again he's actively killing kids, simply shouting/ordering him to put his weapon down could help save some of them/turn his attention to something else
You can't guarantee that at all, for all you know the weak, frequently bullied kid with the rifle would suddenly **** his pants at the shouting from an unseen police officer, and doubly so if shot at...
I think you also overestimate the rifle here, if the walls are brick or concrete then they offer cover... it is 5.56 not 7.62!

[pedanticredneck] assault rifle means it's select fire chambered in an intermediate cartridge, whilst an ar15 is chambered in an intermediate cartridge it's not an assault rifle because it can't fire full auto[/pedanticredneck]
that said, it's just a terminology thing, a semi-automatic version of a military firearm is still going to be a fearsome weapon even in the hands of an amateur.

Its a somewhat contentious definition but a semi automatic rifle like an ar15 would generally fit the description....
The big diferrences between a handgun and an 'assault weapon' are generally muzzle velocity, bullet sizes and magazine capacity which all make assault weapoms far more lethal
Another thing I’m amazed, sadly these things have gotten worse because all the news stations in their subtle sick way hidden behind freedom of the press glamorises these shooters/incidents. Encouraging copycat scenarios for 15 minutes of their disturbed fame.

So you've resorted to insults.... this is basically going no where if you can't even have a constructive conversation.
FYI the cop was behind a concrete post when other officers arrived.
It ought to be pretty obvious that an armed police officer can and likely would help in this scenario, his own police officers seemed to think so too and suspended him.
TBH sounds like blame shifting to me. The police department received multiple complaints about him, as did the FBI.
They receive multiple complaints when cops shoot unarmed black people too, it generally takes a high threshold of incompetence over there for them to criticise a fellow officer.

You can call it insulting you want ... I would suggest its a statement of practical fact that it would be highly foolish to announce, in advance, your presence to a rifle wielding opponent, especially if you were only armed with a typical US police issue 9mm pistol...
That you then went on to suggest the officer would apparently readily be able to find effective cover once inside the school (not likely many concrete walls or posts once inside) rather compounds this asseament
