Today's mass shooting in the US

From what I've read he sounds your typical outspoken Atheist, he probably felt frustrated by not being able to convert 'stupid people' to Atheism. It's a shame Christianity is so looked down upon in modern society we could use values like "thou shalt not kill" now more than ever.

You haven't read the Bible, have you?

They could tackle the problem if they wanted to but its now going to take monumental effort to control the situation and pee off shed loads of crazy Americans that think its their god given right to bear arms.

Not with Trump giving out dumb backing. Paraphrasing:

"This is a mental health problem. Many other contries have mental health problems. This is not a gun problem".

That statement alone explains why its a gun problem.

Just like drug/alcohol prohibition.

The issue with drugs and alcohol is that they are/were both easily available even when prohibited. It is why restrictions must be put in place as well as guns removed from society. Anti-gun campaigns aimed at changing the general public's views on them would then follow to reduce how popular they are.

We have had anti-drug/smoke/drink-driving campaigns in this country. The smoking and drink driving attitudes have changed a lot. As for the attitudes on drugs, some people are very anti-drugs as a result of these campaigns, while others seem to quest for some sort of truth or facts behind drugs, whether in justification or accusation. As cheesy as it sounds, fear created by a variety of media outlets is a great way of changing peoples opinions. The US is pro guns because their media has always banged on about the right to defend and all that crap among other patriotic drivel associated with the constitution.

so when he bought his gun...even though he was legally disqualified from buying one...the only check they have in place where he bought it, was to have a tick box on a form asking if you were disqualified or not (presumably this is to cover the seller if stuff like this happens) so you lie...and nobody checks and you can walk out with a gun

so they rely on the honesty of convicted felons not telling fibs to make sure that people who are legally banned from owning a gun, dont go and buy one??

am I being thick here or does that sound like the worst idea they could come up with?!?!

It was the worst idea they could come up with, gun restrictions and reforms that are seemingly effective may get the ball rolling and severely cut sales. No politician with NRA backing would risk any real reforms and fact is, the republican elite are big on their guns, you don't tend to move up in the party by being anti-gun.

CRIMINALS DON'T CARE ABOUT LAWS!!!111

You've seen it in action right here - laws only stop honest people from buying guns. Ban guns and you only have criminals with them. How should the honest man protect himself?

The NRA don't want any kind of central database being used to deny people the ability buy guns.

If honest disqualified people are stopped I'm not sure what the problem is.

The idea that is perpetuated in America is that people with bad intentions can get guns just as easily in a culture where guns aren't sold to anyone or heavily restricted. Complete crap.

why not just have better checks so honest people can buy them as they are still legally allowed to do so and criminals cant as they get properly vetted?

or is that the wrong answer as well?
