Today's mass shooting in the US

Obama used to get occasionally tearful about events such as Sandy hook, and clearly angry about how it was allowed to happen in a supposedly civilised country.

Trump doesn't really show emotion, unless it's against people attacking him.

I would assume the people that got killed today were Trump voters, as he won big in Texas.

Let that sink in. Obama was doing more to try to prevent their deaths and would be more upset by what happened than the man they (most likely) voted for as President.

Trump won't bite the hand that feeds him full stop.

Another unfortunate example of why all of America cannot be trusted with the liberties that the 2nd Amendment gives them.

This is one of the big problems I have with him. Fine.....address the issues with Islamic terrorism, but deal with this issue as well!

its interesting how Obama used to respond to these types of events with genuine attempts to change things - even though he failed, I’m pretty sure he tried damn hard against the thick skinned bullet-proof NRA and it’s cronies.

In comparison to Obama - literally nothing comes out of Trump at all, when these things happen, no good words, no ideas, no clue - just a tweet containing some BS about prayers and god, he’s trash with money - nothing more.

And I imagine that’s the way it’ll go on, repeated tweets a couple of words each time the bodies pile up.

No hope.
Politics aside - Obama is, or least presents as, a fairly decent human being. He's compassionate and caring, a fantastic narrator and probably gave the US some credibility when in charge.

Trump is an adult panda-sized orange baby with a vocabulary of a 9 year old. He'll be tweeting as soon as he's finished watching Fox and Friends about the massive gains he's making in [insert non gain] and [non gain 2]. The massive downer for him is that no brown people caused these deaths and it's in a very Red state. Let's see how he re-works these facts :/

I'm relatively pro-gun but it boggles my mind that anything approaching full auto is legal to own except specific hunting permits where land owners or pest control might need more rapid fire against larger animals. In many cases just no need for anything but bolt action.

The second ammendment doesnt mention hunting. They aren't for hunting they are for killing people in defense (specifically mentioned in most state constititions) and for parity against federal government agents.

Texas: Every citizen shall have the right to keep and bear arms in the lawful defense of himself or the State; but the Legislature shall have power, by law, to regulate the wearing of arms, with a view to prevent crime. Art. I, § 23 (enacted 1876).
1836: "Every citizen shall have the right to bear arms in defence of himself and the republic. The military shall at all times and in all cases be subordinate to the civil power." Declaration of Rights, cl. 14.
1845: "Every citizen shall have the right to keep and bear arms in lawful defence of himself or the State." Art. I, § 13.
1868: "Every person shall have the right to keep and bear arms in the lawful defence of himself or the State, under such regulations as the legislature may prescribe." Art. I, § 13.

Interesting sidenote: Texas has its own military under control of their governor. It's the only state with an air force. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Military_Forces

For all intents and purposes it's no different.

However, doing it at a show is legal. Selling from the trunk of a car is illegal.

Despite the eventual outcome being the same... undesirables have easy access to guns with no traceability.

Nope. You can buy a gun from any private person if you're allowed to own one, but the seller doesnt have a requirement to check. If they knew somehow you were a felon they would get in trouble. If they sell more than a certain number a year without an FFL its considered dealing and they get in trouble.

Theres no such thing as a gunshow loophole.

I think the key difference is that Obama was competent as a leader and competent as a politician. I understand why the USA set up their constitution to only allow two terms, but it's bitten them in the arse this time. They'd have been far better off with Obama again than with Trump or Clinton 2. That choice was a farce that might make it as the plot of a comedy. "Worse and Worser". Like "Dumb and Dumber", but in politics. Then we had Corbyn or May, aka "Worse and Worser 2".

Trying to make any significant change regarding mass shootings in the USA would require radical social change and radical legal change and would be very hard to do all that well even if there was any political will to do it because it's inherently easier to smuggle stuff into the USA than most places because of its enormous coastline.

It's not wholly clear-cut, though. This one killed 26. How many more would he have killed if it hadn't been for the armed civilian there who shot him? Certainly more than he did.

Wtf

I'll just straight up repost what I put on another forum on this issue.

Problem is apart from the usual platitudes what is there to say? There's been two dozen incidents that should have been the one to wake them up but they're too concerned with "mah gunz" to do anything so people keep dying.

It's sad that I'm numb to it at this point, but if America is unwilling to change this is an inevitability.

Now is the time not to discuss it, it is a time for grieving and giving support to the families....

Oh wait....when do they actually discuss it, until a politician with some balls steps up in America the country is going nowhere but backward.

It's honestly getting to the point where we may as well have a single thread for 'Murican shootings. Unbelievable. In a church no less.

IIRC its the 3rd multiple casualty shooting in a place of worship in the US in the last 6 months and there was another high profile one in 2015.

Just to remind ourselves of the fantastically strict gun laws in Texas...

* application fee for a handgun licence: $40
* courses in gun handling can be completed online (no time in a classroom required)
* minimum shooting range instruction before a test can be taken: 1 hour
* licensed students can carry concealed weapons on college campuses
* licensed owners can carry their weapons in most public spaces
* concealed carry permitted in bars where <50% of revenue is derived from the sale of alcohol

What could possibly go wrong?
