Today's mass shooting in the US

indeed, this is the major problem with any american gun argument is that there are too many examples of this level of basic idiocy when it comes to the fundamentals of firearm safety.

very few guns are complicated to use (in the basic sense of loading/unloading and firing), so there's no excuse.

Even with firearms safety very much in mind its possible to overlook things as well - for a long time I just kind of assumed as long as the gun was angled (horizontally) down range and pointing downwards (muzzle) everything was fine - wasn't until relatively recently I became aware of "dangling" as in you can be accidentally sweeping your feet without even thinking about it. (And that assumes there is nothing below you of consequence such as you are on a higher floor of a building with people below).

Having guns around kids in that context really isn't a good idea.

I admit that I don't know much about guns, but aren't modern ones carefully designed to not fire unless the trigger is pulled? And isn't one of the most basic rules of gun safety to not touch the trigger unless you're intending to fire?

You pull the trigger, it fires. Due to the design of pistols and how you hold them, it's very easy to pull the trigger by mistake when you grab for it.

Especially when they got hair triggers which makes the trigger very light.

In the video linked above he claims in a follow up video that due to his job he is supposed to have a loaded firearm on him at all times (which seems to be a common theme with these accidental discharge events in demos at schools) - which still questions his judgement as he chose to show them his personal (loaded) weapon rather than use all unloaded/props. (For the purpose of gun safety though there is no such thing as an unloaded firearm - you should always consider a firearm "loaded" even when you've cleared it).

Yeah you' think for a gun safety course in a class room theyd have a prop with a welded barrel or something

Not strictly in keeping with the thread, but might it not be an idea to alter the title?
When I see, “Another mass shooting in the U.S”, I think, what, so soon after Miami?

Well, there has been a dozen or so gun mishaps in schools since this, few from the top of my head.

Some cop left his secondly back up gun in a school locker.
Some teacher shot himself.
Some teacher (reserve cop) had an accidental discharge and slightly hurt a few kids, nothing major.
Some kid bought to school a gun in her back pack for some reason.

Just 4 things from the top of my head since the school shooting. I'm sure there is more.

No words.

Memphis, Tennessee — Authorities in Mississippi say a 9-year-old boy shot his 13-year-old sister in the head after an argument over a video game controller. Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell told local news outlets that the girl wouldn’t give up the video game controller when her brother wanted it on Saturday. He says the boy shot the girl in the back of the head and that the bullet entered her brain.

According to WTVA, the girl was rushed to Le Bonheur’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, where she later died from her injuries.

That's him ****** up for the rest of his life. Dare I ask how 9 year old gained access to a gun so easily? Do the Yanks not promote gun lockers/cabinets ?

a firearm kept in the house in the US is more likely to be used on a member of the household than an intruder

IIRC something like 4 times more likely to shoot someone by accident with it than ever use it against an intruder... and also more likely to commit suicide with it, murdering someone with it (family members especially) etc.. etc..

The real question here is why didn't the girl have her own gun? Then she could have shot her brother first to prevent him shooting her.

If the parents had high calibre fully automatic assault weapons they could have killed both kids as soon as trouble started to brew. Or maybe explosives, could have got the neighbours too!

This is part of the issue though, who does JO think he is to barge into the US and lecture them on their laws. He wouldn't have all this freedom of speech in any (or most other countries). That was the point of America, a new world with many liberties and now people like JO are trying to take those freedoms away.

Ultimately if he had his way you would end up with some kind of highly monitored police state, huge amount of censorship and a godless society.

I find JO quite a sad sanctimonious chap really.

What is wrong with a godless society? Secularism is the preferred option.

He was literally hired to do exactly that.

On a tangent, apparently Channel 4 wanted to make a topical satirical news show, and had JO recommended to them. Bosses at the channel didn't go for it as they didn't like his accent! America, who know a thing or two about such shows, capably illustrated C4's folly. He's pretty much the best in the business.
