Top Gear Season 14

That would be the middle ground that 5th gear tried to occupy, and subsequently got cancelled for?

no this would be the same middle group it covered a few series ago (see my link above to the monaro vs 300c vs jaguar S type R on the beach video when they reviewed the then new 997 911 carrera) when everybody still raved about how good it was.

I'm not talking about taking it back to the days of chris geoffey and quentin wilson !

Yep, that'd be top notch entertainment on a Sunday night

No, but it'd be informative. Perhaps you should consider other people might be interested in learning something useful or relevant rather than vegging in front of the TV. It's not that they haven't made things like that entertaining the in the past though, it could still very much be enjoyable for the vegging types. Maybe it'd be more of a challenge to write and make entertaining than driving three supercars through tunnels in Switzerland whilst the presenter make half arsed pops at each other. Maybe they can't be bothered anymore and are just happy with making lots of money. It's just a little disappointing it's gone too low-brow.

I may dip in and out of this series, but I can't see myself watching a whole show through without doing something else or getting bored. The last few series have been like this for me.

You enjoy it though.

If I want informative I don't tune to the BBC on a Sunday night.

If you want to learn something useful and relevant why are you watching prime time TV on a mainstream terrestrial channel? Seriously, what do you expect? Of course it's not going to be about 'learning something useful' and being 'informative', it's simply a car based entertainment show.

Just what I want on a Sunday night

This forum never ceases to amaze me.

I am considered the most dull, boring, old before my time and sedate person on this forum by quite some margin. Yet this is despite the presence of 21 year olds who think TG would be improved by a bi-annual MPV roundup

Why are you trying to argue with me, I don't dispute any of that? I'm just saying that's what I'd prefer - not just titting around, but some serious stuff too.
I'm glad you enjoy the show.

You haven't met me - I'm very dull, boring and old before my time too.

It wasn't bi-annual either, I said once every two years, that's enough MPVs for anyone! A five to ten minute round up would be fine, I'm not asking for a full road test, just some pointers. As you said, a magazine or a test drive would provide more information.

I guess what I'm saying is, TG has lost it's way and ignored it's roots, and I'd prefer a bit less of a low-brow show. In fact, it's pretty clear what I'm saying, MrLOL seems to be able to express it a bit more succinctly than me though.

I thought there was a distinct lack of explosions in the last one.

More women.
More explosions.
More tomfoolery.

I think it could do with a bit of an update, but the filming is still brilliant, some of the jokes are a little tired, but in general still highly amusing. It's a good entertaining show, but I think it's resting on it's laurels a little. However as a 1st show of the season it did keep my attention going. It is well written, Clarkson is... well, Clarkson - you either love him or hate him. If you read his books they are all identical, but at the same time rather fun too albeit not that original.

Guys, Autocar et al do online video reviews if you want information about cars.

Go watch Chris Harris' stuff if that's your thing :)

I watched one of the early early episodes of Top Gear and it's was bloody boring!

Out of the people who buy a brand new MPV, how many do you think would watch a TV show or buy a magazine before buying? Or do they go along to their nearest dealerships, go press all the buttons and talk to a saleperson and buy what they prefer?

We live in a world where people are capable of making their own decisions based on their own research so they buy what they want what not the man on TV said to buy. People are still buying and using cars without Top Gear and others opinion.

The purpose of a car being reviewed on TV will always be in cooperation with the manfacturer to get publicity on their new car on the TV, regardless of how the presenters find it. I'd much rather have the Top Gear team write an entertaining script, throw in some awesome cars and potentially enlighten me about the places they visit, the awesome cars they drive but most of all make me laugh and forget that I'm back at work in the morning. I don't give a **** how much MPG a diesel Citroen kid carrier claims to get, I can check that online. But if they can tell me that and make it entertaining I'm all for it. Frankly, they probably can't so they won't.

Yeah, you don't care about car reviews, but some other people do. I know most people don't care and would rather watch it as it is now. I'm just saying there's a better balance to be struck.

That's it - Alex out.

What makes me laugh is that the same people who moan about the lack of straight, factual reviews of cars on Top Gear are the people who didn't watch 5th Gear when they were showing just that. Now 5th Gear has been canned due to low ratings, and they're griping about Top Gear not showing what they want.

*sigh*

I enjoy TG but am finding it VERY repetitive these days, I liked when it moved over to the new format with more emphasis on fun and arsing about in cars, but once that became popular the fun had to get exaggerated more and more meaning everything got scripted and setup.

Personally I'd enjoy the show more if it was just the three of them messing about in nice cars, talking about them without all the falseness. It would still be amusing without that feeling they are trying to pull one over the viewers.

Indeed. It's as if they watch it just so they can bitch about it

Ah you've got it sussed. There's nothing I'd rather do than spend my sunday evenings watching a show so that I can come on here and bitch about it to a load of people who don't care, just want to argue and that I couldn't care less about.....

It couldn't be because I used to enjoy it and wanted to see if I still did, now that would be silly.

If you're still confused, that's all sarcasm.

That would be better, I didn't mind the show when it was like that.

I honestly think people draw this "pulling one over the viewers" feeling becasue they read negative comments on the internet. All it takes is one comment from someone who can't disengage their brain and enjoy something for what it is to be seen by many and the bandwagon then transforms into a road train becasue every time people watch it they have those comments in the back of their mind and think they start spotting flaws and problems with it.

It's like film reviews. If you took the film at face value you'd love it, but after reading someone elses negative thoughts you go in trying to like it but take their comments to heart and it stops your enjoyment of it.

Anyway, no need to declare either way what it should or shouldn't be. The producers of the show know what they want to air and if people don't want to watch it they will do something else. They tried boring reviews, as did Fifth Gear, and look how that turned out.
