Top Gear Season 14

I dont want serious car reviews, I want a car based entertainment show.

If I want a serious car review I'll buy a magazine or take a test drive.

what proper serious TV reviews are there though.

Drivers Republic filled this segment, but ive been left with a hole that quick 2 minute clips on evo doesnt fill.

I would prefer it we had a mix of both. Dont get me wrong, i laughed my head off when the sandero was crushed.

But you just knew it was scripted and james was acting.

Personally I'd rather watch a load of cars I'll never afford go sideways around a test track than watch the mk9000 Golf go driving around a city centre.

Then we want different things - you'd like a all singing all dancing car show extravaganza with explosions and fireworks and lots of wheel spinning, whereas I'd like some of that, and some real life stuff too.

I guess the writers interpret the wants of the general public to be the same as yours, as that's how we've seen Top Gear change over the last 4-5 years. Perhaps the general public are more like you and they're getting it right, but the general public also bore of things quite quickly, and TV needs to be relatively dynamic nowadays to survive.

I'm probably not representative of the general public though, I accept that, but that's just what I'd rather watch. I'm certainly entitled to express my own opinion.

did i say i didnt laugh ?

no, i still enjoy it. But on the subject of how i would change top gear, i would take it back to how it was on series 5. That had the balance between reviews and entertainment just right for me.

I was gutted when I found out that Transformers II was scripted as well. I was like, OMG, how dare they :(

That's a film. This is a non-fictional TV show. You must be confused.

You can never have enough explosions and fireworks on a car based TV show. :p

I disagree, but you may be with 80% of the Top Gear audience on that one.

I'm not sure what series number it was, but I really enjoyed the first one of the 'new' Top Gear style. It was good before that, but lacked some pzazz, which they brought into it well, and moved the whole show to a much more mainstream audience. I think they've gone too far in that direction now though, and if I say any more I'd be repeating myself again.

TG of old: Presenters opening the bonnet of an utterly dull everyday saloon and talking about the 'oily bits' with one leg propped up on the front bumper.

Current TG: 3 men arsing about in cars I'll never afford in places I'll probably never go, and with a good dose of humour and stunning visuals thrown in.

Yeah, I know which I prefer..........

Serious review of most cars most of the audience can afford - Dull and boring, if you're buying a car then you do it on more than the merits of a TV program.

Serious review of most cars most of the audience can't afford - Lose half the target audience because they don't care about how the AMV8 is x amount of seconds slower than the R8 round a track.

People enjoy seeing expensive cars thrashed with a dash of wackiness/humour thrown in and a bit of a review (See: LP640 review). It pleases the most people because it's both interesting and entertaining. I'm a car fan but even I'd get sick of watching Drivers Republic for 60mins every Sunday evening.

There's middle ground though. There were about 3 series where there was a good mixture of car reviews and titting about. I was always into it before, but yes, it could be dull sometimes, just now it's too far the other way for me.

That would be the middle ground that 5th gear tried to occupy, and subsequently got cancelled for?

Thats right, yes.

And I don't really care which is which for the purposes of entertainment.

So what if the jokes are scripted?

Nothing wrong with scripted jokes its just when they try to make out they are not ie: taking people for a **** it comes across so false.

They feel awkward and unnatural when not delivered by a professional.

Yeah, round about there, just with a better finish and presentation.

I've already said I'm probably not in the majority, though 5th gear was never as popular, even with the petrolheads. Perhaps because people never gave it a chance over top gear, or perhaps most people aren't like me.

The thing is, most of the time I'm not that interested in straight reviews, and even when I am, it is only certain types of car. Reviews matter when you're thinking of changing car, or if a company does something radical, the rest of the time, a staid review does not have that much value compared to an entertaining segment that involves the new car.

Well, I would be. Not on boring supermarket trolleys or diesel hatchbacks, but of interesting cars that people might still actually buy. Hell, perhaps even with a MPV round up every other year. As long as they made it informative and interesting it wouldn't be a problem for me, and they've done that successfully in the past, so I don't see why it can't still be done.

That's the sort of show I'd like, evidently I'm not alone, but probably still in a minority. I don't know what else I can say.
