So what if they did? There wouldn't really be anything wrong about doing that. Germany have been mocked many times by Top Gear over WW2 and by plenty of other famous people, the Germans didn't come out in their hundreds and throw stones at them though... The controversial thing here is the way the Argentinians reacted. Over a number plate.

I don't care what the argies done. it annoys me that top gear are denying it and saying it was a coincidence.

Thinking about it, it would have been worse in the UK as you would not only have the protestors to deal with but the people who want something for free as a result like a new tv or some free trainers or track suits.

Would you? Clarkson etc won't take the fall for it and tbh, it was likely one or two of the crew who thought it would be funny. If they admit to doing it on purpose, who knows how the bbc will react. Could cost some one their job, if they all just stick to the story they will wait till it all blows over :p

yeah your correct. if they stick to the same story people will just let it slide. minus the argies of course. but its the same routine every time this subject comes up.

I'm still not quite sure why Jeremy hasn't moved Top Gear to itv like wossy did. He only gets the bad press because the media can linger on the lie that he's paid for by the tax payer. They conveniently forget to couple it with the fact that Top Gear generates a profit for the BBC.

Pretty silly thing for them to have done. Irrespective of the fact that the locals should not have reacted in that fashion, the Top Gear team went to a less than developed country, one who's relationship with the UK is tense at the best of times and clearly provoked a reaction.

As for anyone who believes the plate was a coincidence and not deliberate... lol

Do you think it was?

I do, yes. Or at least, the story of it being a coincidence is far closer to the truth than the one the tabloids concocted about it all being a set-up from the start. It's a rather obscure and insignificant 'gag' to have bothered with in the first place; why would they have deliberately set out buying a car with that plate when they could have, if they'd wanted, just changed the plate after purchase? Or just use a fake plate ala the 'BE11 END' one? Plausible deniability is one reason but then if they were thinking that far ahead, you'd expect they'd also have considered the angry reaction they might get.

Maybe it is the case that one of the researchers saw the plate while looking for cars and thought it might be funny to go for it but I honestly don't see how they'd have had the resources to go searching for a car with an offensive plate in the first place.

You'd also think that one of the many, many crew might have whistleblown about it being a set-up given that their lives were in quite immediate danger at the time.

Considering the relatively heartfelt story about JC's dad, I'd say it would be an incrediable bit of luck to pull that car out with that numberplate.

You have to be incredibly naive to think the plate was a coincidence.

Exactly. Come on, they were constantly making remarks about the whole Falklands situation throughout both episodes, it's obvious they knew the plate would get a reaction. The car has been around for 23 years, it's hardly implausible that someone knew about it and bought it for the show.

You'd have to wonder how deep the conspiracy was if it was a set up.

Did they buy the car, then plan the special round it? That seems a bit far fetched, the fact anyone noticed the connection is surprising, are we to believe someone in the top gear team saw the car, saw the plate, and said "I've got a great idea.."?

Its less convincing to think the special was planned then they happened to find a car for sale with that number plate that fitted the rules.

It seems more realistic to believe it was a genuine coincidence to me.

As regard to the photo of it with a different number plate, you can see the sticky tape. Obviously when the private plate was took off, the new (controversial) plates just got stuck over the top for some reason.

In all 21 series since Top Gear returned, I don't recall Clarkson driving a single Porsche in one of their challenges (well, except the £1000 Porsche challenge). Yet the one time they film in Argentina, their lead presenter, and most controversial one, just so happens to be driving the one which has a huge reference to the Falklands war.

For me, even as a huge Top Gear fan, that's appalling.

It's "hardly implausible" that someone on the Top Gear production team knew about an old grey Porsche with a numberplate that could be interpreted as a reference to the Falklands war, and that said car happened to be for sale at the time of needing a car for an episode filmed in the Falklands?

Really? I'm coming at this with an open mind despite having already formed my own opinion, but even I can't see a convincing argument for it being deliberate other than "Well that's just what they do innit".

He also said that it was the same car that got him to his dad's deathbed in time to say goodbye. Perhaps that had something to do with why he had a 928? It seems unlikely any of them went out shopping for their own cars.

Hence his love for Porsc... oh no, wait.

I'm not saying he went out and bought it, but it's rather fitting that the car which caused all of this controversy just so happened to be the one he was handed the keys to...

Except for the Porsche 944 he drove in the rear wheel drive cheap car challenge in France ;)

As someone who knows nothing about these things, how difficult would it be to check if they just bought a personalised plate for the car or if someone else bought that plate way before top gear did for whatever reason

You are arguing that is unlikely that the car was on sale when around the time they needed a car for the filming of the episode, yet if the "coincidence" version of events is true the car actually was on sale around the time the episode was being filmed.

If the "complete coincidence" story is believable then how is this a less likely story?:

Top gear director "OK everyone we're filming for the Argentina special next year and we need three V8s for the guys to drive around in so keep a lookout for some decent examples".
Couple of weeks later...
Crew member "Hey look what I found guys its a Porsche V8 for sale with the number plate H982 FKL trolllolol"
