Total War: Warhammer 3

the non warhammer total war games let you hand off troops to the AI though in guard/attack mode it's just removed for some unknown reason from the total war series.

I think even the total war battle arena online only game even had AI you could turn on

yea but you'd think they would be smart enough to turn and fire on others that are in range just not in the cone.

they are supposed to be troops with brains, in real life you don't micro manage so much you have people in each group being the leader of that group under your command.

it kinda makes sense units should have some form of AI and not be brick dumb.

I see someone modded it back in though for warhammer 2

Which Total War games have this? It's not something I remember seeing, and I've been playing since Shogun Total War over 20 years ago.

Micromanaging your army is literally the gameplay during battles in this series. Asking for that to be done automatically would be like asking for an AI to control when to jump in Super Mario.

I remember every total war game I ever played having it.

you basically selected what units you wouldn't to hand over to AI, created a group for them with ctrl+1 or whatever then you could set that group to AI control and it would use the same AI the enemy does and you could turn the AI on/off at will or tell it to attack anything in an area or to defend an area.

That link doesnt support your claim. That is a feature where by if you used multiple armies in a battle, resulting in more than 20 units (the players maximum number it could control), then the additional units would be controlled by terrible AI assistance. You could not set part of your 20 unit army to be controlled by the AI.

I'm not talking about when your army is more than 20 you could do it even if you only had 1 troop

I can't find any videos of it since "AI" in any search term.... it's like nightmare scenario

When you have grouped units their group formation button on the UI should gain two additional options, one for AI defend and one for AI attack.
I believe AI defend can be used to have the ai defend an area... TBH I usually only use these commands on parts of the battle once I am done with the micro so I can focus on other things.
In example, once my main infantry line is engaged I will put that unit under air control while I focus on flanking / archer focus fire. Additionally, if you are not microing your skirmishers I find it best to put them under AI control.
it wasn't for a second army you could literally group off 1 archer unit and have him set to AI defend an area

this guy seems to be doing it but with keyboard shortcuts

listen from around 2:45

I guess it's more like Attack move but the units select their own targets, use charge on their own etc and you could assign them to defend an area and they would attack anyone who approaches

it seemed to be completely missing from total warhammer 2

They took that out of the series a few years ago. You used to be able to hover your mouse over the grouping button on the army panel then select "AI Group Attack" or "AI Group Defend". I think Attila was the last game to have it?

ahh yes that's exactly what I'm talking about.

seems too annoying to play without it.

someone made a mod that basically does the same though it seems

From what I played of warhammer II the AI seemed as dumb as a brick literally, only firing if something enters the cone, wouldn't turn to attack targets in range etc.

I want to control an army sure but I want it to be somewhat real.... in real life you wouldn't be issusing every single command you have others taking up the slack.

just seems like a poor show to remove the feature from the games to save time and money

Group Attack is in Warhammer II. Works exactly as shown in this video.

I'd forgotten this was even a thing. Just loaded up Medieval 2 to give it a go, and can kind of see the appeal as a crutch for new players. But it's really no substitute for learning to play the game - the AI's decision-making often isn't great.

In real life, there wasn't a god-like commander flying above the battlefield, able to see everything and telepathically communicate with every group of troops on the field (well, maybe in Warhammer ).

Looking forward to this but it's Mortal Empires 2 that I really want.

Yeah I think the Mortal Empires 2 campaign will be where its at. Most of the reviews I've seen so far for Warhammer 3 (including one by a guy with 750 hours in Warhammer 3 already and he also has 13,000 hours in Warhammer 2) , say the same thing....that the main campaign of Warhammer 3 is pretty rubbish, in much the same way that the vortex campaign in Warhammer 2 was pretty rubbish. Game is going to really be best when playing the new combined map campaign I think (again, the same as Warhammer 2)

Those are some crazy stats. Assuming this person plays 12hrs per day, that's 62 days for Warhammer 3 and almost 3yrs for Warhammer 2 playing every day for 12hrs. Either those numbers are inaccurate, or the persons life is only Warhammer. Also Warhammer 3 has only recently been made available to reviewers, not sure how so many hours have been racked up already?

He showed both his Warhammer 2 and his Warhammer 3 steam page with the hours displayed, live on stream. He's been a tester for Warhammer 3 ever since the first stage of testing. Now of course, the 13,000 warhammer 2 time on his steam page isnt proof that he played 13,000 hours of the game, who knows, he could have simply left his pc on running warhammer 2 nonstop whilst he slept each night etc. Of course he is also a twitch streamer who exclusively streams Total Warhammer every day as his main source of income so I imagine he probably does indeed stream at least 8 hours a day, every day of TW2 (or did prior to TW3)

Now this is a guy I trust with Totalwar reviews.

No offence to IGN, but they gave Battlefield 2042 7/10.

Gist is that Warhammer 3 is better then 2, at it's launch. But 2 in it's current state is better then 3, because of Mortal Empires.

The thing that has got me excited about this most is the larger multiplayer campaigns. I have two other friends who play WH2 a lot so having a big MP campaign with them will be great.

will be interesting to see how large the make the combined map and whether it will have a cut down New World and Southlands again.
