Tower block fire - london

I'd hope so (remembering, not hoping for death...), but this directly implicates the government in probable wrongdoing, at the very least the Council is liable. If nothing comes to pass, you'll know that people don't actually give a **** about real justice.

Especially for poor people.

I'm sensing real rage, unrest, over this. It's the perfect storm really. Lilly Allen put it well by describing the situation as the government trying to "micro manage" the whole thing. They probably know full well that the real fatality figure is closer to 100 and are just preparing for a whirlwind.

what has 'the government' done wrong.... Please be specific....

if your going to claim the government housing minister was against regulating for compulsory sprinkler system in such buildings I will remind you

1) that the stated reason was the government didn't want to un duly inhibit building development were there was so much demand. Corbyn has promised to massively increase building of public housing if he gets in. This is not compatible with a simultaneous massive tightening of building regs.

2) that building regs haven't changed much I'm years and labour was in power for plenty of time if they wanted to change things I'm the 90's and 00's most changes have been about environmental considerations

3) this is tragic but rare event. 1810 people died on UK roads in 2016,nearly 5 every day. We could so far more if the sole aim was to reduce road traffic deaths... But we don't as its recognised the alternatives have costa of their own

4) that sprinkler systems are not a pancea for fire safety and cause issues of their own especially in public housing

Yes however the residents have a rather visible line of complaint going back years, there's literally a blog outlining this. I will admit a housing minister sitting on fire regulations is probably not grounds for suspension, but i'm pretty sure there was a vote in parliament at one point where 72 Tories who have unreasonable bias in rental properties voted to not update the regulations at all.

As i said, the council is at least culpable.

its irresponsible for the authority to state anything but the 'official' figure at this stage. Anyone else is missing at this stage. It's boot some nasty tory policy. It for the same reason that police only talk about finding a 'body' until formal recognition has been completed. Lily Allen has shown herself to be a vapid over emotional fool who should not be relied upon for a sensible view on any serious matter

Seems to be that the cheap cladding is where this is pointing. The whole thing stinks. Can't believe the stuff is allowed in UK whereas US, rightly, banned it. It is despicable.

The stuff they removed was harmless, it's just common to remove it anyway (even if a building is safer with it) becauses the public in general know nothing about asbestos except it's a super scary word of doom. I.E people moaning about asbestos sink pads in schools which present zero risk to anyone.

That seems unlikely, the council maybe, still depends on the report - were there supposed to be fire breaks, did the plans call for one type of cladding an this other type was used in the end.. you need to find out where the failings occurred before declaring for sure who was to blame. Cladding has been added to various tower blocks in plenty of different local authority areas under governments and councils run by all three main political parties.

Something went wrong big time, most of these people who died should have been out within the first thirty minutes.

Whole families, small children were trapped and died in the most horrendous way.

Possibly 100 if not more dead, one of the biggest disasters in the last few decades.

This is not a third world country, fires due to cladding in high rise structures have happened recently in other countries but never with this amount of casualties.

And to compare it to a road accident is frankly insulting.

It's not banned in the US, it's use is very common but prohibited in situations like it was used here (which AFAIK is also the case in the UK, the company who installed it cut corners).

I'm still surprised we haven't heard any news about the owners of the building and those with direct responsibility for it. Why haven't they not been arrested yet?

People need to go to jail for this.

What makes this truly dark is the fact bodies are still up on those smouldering floors in sight of everyone working/living in the area. Fire services can't reach them yet.

Because the investigation hasn't been completed? Need proof that something was knowingly done wrong.
